An Exciting, Lucid, & Articulate Account of CRISPR, Gene-editing
Revisado: 03-21-21
An Exciting, Lucid, & Articulate Account of CRISPR, Gene-editing & the drivers behind the scientific leap forward brought to us by the joining of brilliant minds against viruses, including COVID19. As someone who has earned two doctorates, an MPH, worked at NIH & served as a scientific reviewer for grants, PAs/FOAs, peer-reviewed publications, and translated Scientific evidence into policy, I can relate to the academic, funding, publishing & policy sides of the competitive science community. This books fills an interesting & important gap for anyone who has an interest in the evolution of our species & the elimination of disease, disability & premature death.

Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

GREENLIGHTS shines a path on how to realize positivity!
Revisado: 03-16-21
GREENLIGHTS might be the most uplifting book to come out of the pandemic era. Although the scope is his first 50 years, the frankness & humor with which he delivers it shines a light on so many GO boldly forward (Greenlights or green signals). Beyond the “green” lights, he’s turned yellow & red “lights” into positive greens, as well as simply identifying the many green lights/signals & how to maximize them.
It had strange beginning (I thought perhaps he had been in an abusive house but it was just a quirky thing). An enormous advantage to the Audible version shines through as Matthew McConaughey reads his own colorful words & thoughts with with HIS voice including his real accent; this charming English dialect sounds the similar to his in his movie (he wrote it too) THE DALLAS BUYERS CLUB). I had no idea just how many productions he has been involved in nor how talented of a writer was behind his acting.

Revisado: 06-16-19
STILL ALICE truly captures the horrifying aspects of an intelligent, well-educated, highly respected professor living with a declining brain in middle age. As a retired NIH professional who frequently interfaced with research on Alzheimer’s research, I found this outstandingly well-written, relatable & REAL.

Dr. Kate Mulgrew articulates end-of-life relationships fluently
Revisado: 05-27-19
As professional as her acting & as entrancing as her characters “Captain Katherine Janeway” in Star Trek & “Red” in Orange is the New Black, Dr. Kate Mulgrew’s superb writing weaves the threads of past relationships with the complexities of grown sibling & parental-offspring realities. She amazingly articulates end-of-life relationships fluently so that the listener both can relate & learn. Well written & performed.

Historia
Buried for decades, the Up Stairs Lounge tragedy has only recently emerged as a catalyzing event of the gay liberation movement. In revelatory detail, Robert W. Fieseler chronicles the tragic event that claimed the lives of 31 men and one woman on June 24, 1973, at a New Orleans bar, the largest mass murder of gays until 2016. Relying on unprecedented access to survivors and archives, Fieseler creates an indelible portrait of a closeted, blue-collar gay world that flourished before an arsonist ignited an inferno that destroyed an entire community.

Compelling Account-Robotic-sounding narration
Revisado: 05-08-19
This important account of an ignored/buried hate-crime fills a critical gap in LGBTQ & civil-rights history. My big peeve is that the narrator has a ridiculously monotone voice which could almost lull one to sleep despite the captivating story.

In The Threat: How the FBI Protects America in the Age of Terror and Trump, Andrew G. McCabe offers a dramatic and candid account of his career and an impassioned defense of the FBI.

Entered skeptically & cautious, but fully impressed
Revisado: 04-19-19
Retired Acting FBI Director & >20 yr veteran of the FBI & Federal workforce, Andrew G McCabe, Esq has a rep (with some) of arrogance, however I believe that air comes from many years of OJT & the use of CQI required to be a lifelong learner. He eloquently lays out his credentials & motivation for CHOOSING to be in the FBI at the peril of his family’s finances & emotional well-being. Then in a very confident tone he factually walks readers through hard evidence. I say this as someone who KNOWS Federal ethics laws/regs & the reason for separation between the Executive, Judicial & Legislative branches of government, as someone who worked as a career Fed under Obama & Trump, & as a citizen seriously concerned about Trump’s seemingly boundless willful ignorance & failure to utilize & TRUST the highly trained career Feds who have dedicated their careers to Democracy.
I keep thinking that Congress will awaken; however, as I was reading this, the redacted Mueller Report was released & both Attny Gen Barr (who appears to be acting as the President’s personal attorney instead of the nation’s) & the WH are using double speak to minimize the public’s realization of & reaction to unprecedented corruption, & litany of No-evidence or Anti-evidence, factless policies, as well as the ridiculous rate of turnover (both of politically-appointed & career Feds). Nonetheless, when a mobster is running a dictatorship, & being manipulated by foreign entities, we MUST stand up, speak up & rally to renew the democratic values for which the USA used to stand as recently as 2015 (by 2016, the campaigns & no-action Congress had blocked President Obama’s ability to even replace a Supreme Court Justice.
Kudos & heartfelt gratitude to Retired Acting Director & FBI Agent McCabe.

A Lucid Rollercoaster of Emotions
Revisado: 03-21-19
NIGHT ROAD takes the reader on a seamlessly well-written & performed roller coaster from a less than ideal childhood to high peaks of joy with plummeting falls & rises. Expect spikes of laughter & tears (sadness could be profound depending on your own childhood-I almost stopped due to how Hannah evoked my own but I’m so glad I did not). The ride & the end feeling will touch all but those without empathy. Stick with Hannah’s characters; they won’t disappoint & may grow parts of you that you believed were dead or at least “matured.”

Jacob Hunt is a teen with Asperger's syndrome. He's hopeless at reading social cues or expressing himself well to others, though he is brilliant in many ways. But he has a special focus on one subject - forensic analysis. A police scanner in his room clues him in to crime scenes, and he's always showing up and telling the cops what to do. And he's usually right. But when Jacob's small hometown is rocked by a terrible murder, law enforcement comes to him. Jacob's behaviors are hallmark Asperger's, but they look a lot like guilt to the local police.

Dangerous Anti-Vaxer Misinformation
Revisado: 03-02-19
Having read nearly all of Picoult’s novels, I was sorely disappointed by her perpetuation of the now fully debunked misinformation that vaccines cause Autism or Aspergers. The paper that initially began this dangerous myth, was horribly fraught with methodological issues and ultimately recalled. The anecdotal cases in this book are based solely on the correlation that parents are able to distinguish behaviors at an age that also happens to have a relatively heavy immunization schedule. Public Health professionals are now battling not only outbreaks but full epidemics in the US in 2019 because of such misinformation. SHAME ON JODI PICOULT FOR NOT CORRECTING HER BIAS. The National Institutes Of Health (NIH), the Centers fie Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) & the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), as well as the American Public Health Association (APHA) have had to tackle re-emerging infectious diseases that were once on the verge of extinction; this diverts scarce resources from new & emerging health threats such as Ebola, Avian Flu & bioterrorism, along with the chronic killers of heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s, diabetes & more. I’m more than very disappointed & am requesting a refund plus an author response.
