This book reveals the most complete picture ever of the KGB and its operations in the United States and Europe. It is based on an extremely top secret archive which details the full extent of its worldwide network. Christopher Andrew is professor of modern and contemporary history and chair of the history department at Cambridge University, a former visiting professor of national security at Harvard, a frequent guest lecturer at other United States universities, and a regular host of BBC radio and TV programs.

Thorough, but TMI
Revisado: 08-20-21
This book was very thorough yet it was very hard to get through. Too much detail and very easy to get lost in all the name dropping. A little less minutiae and more background detail would have made this book more enjoyable. Parts were fascinating, but most droned on for me.

Historia
John Lydon is an icon - one of the most recognizable and influential cultural figures of the last 40 years. As Johnny Rotten, he was the lead singer of the Sex Pistols, the world's most notorious band. The Pistols shot to fame in the mid-1970s with songs such as "Anarchy in the U.K." and "God Save the Queen". So incendiary was their impact at the time that in their native England, the Houses of Parliament questioned whether they violated the Traitors and Treasons Act.

Too long
Revisado: 11-11-20
Rotten has an interesting life that could have been summarized in half the time. He is a bit hypocritical at points not clearly sticking to whether he likes or dislikes someone or something. Unfortunately, I wasn’t a big fan of PIL, so his I was more interested in the Sex Pistols and his personal life which he gives his side of. PIL didn’t suck, but weren’t great either IMO. I liked Steve Jones book better. Perhaps because Steve narrated it himself, and to be honest he is more entertaining to listen to, and doesn’t take himself or ego as seriously as dear old Johnny who does drone on through a lot of the book. NVMTB is no doubt a fantastic record for many reasons. A group of people who disliked each other, naive to the business, and played by Malcolm and company created such an amazing record with sound and lyrics just as relevant today as in 1977. My take away from the book is that I agree with John’s opinions on a lot of things. I also think he would be a giant pain in the ass to work with.

Fun read
Revisado: 07-04-20
Pretty outrageous, but that’s what made it a fun listen. Like a lot of stories, movies, and shows, this could have been really cool working the diving in more reasonably, and a more interesting crime, but whatever. It killed some time in a good way. It was a free listen too. Wouldn’t pay for it.

Historia
For centuries, the vineyards at Château Renard have depended on the talent of their vine witches, whose spells help create the world-renowned wine of the Chanceaux Valley. Then the skill of divining harvests fell into ruin when sorcière Elena Boureanu was blindsided by a curse. Now, after breaking the spell that confined her to the shallows of a marshland and weakened her magic, Elena is struggling to return to her former life. And the vineyard she was destined to inherit is now in the possession of a handsome stranger.

Well.... this book sucked on so many levels. Lame story, went in too many directions, narrator’s accents poor, overall not sure why I stuck with it. Maybe self torture. I’m a beer and whiskey guy, so the wine snobbery also put me off. I read fantasy, I’m sticking with Demon Accords and MHI.

Do your R&D
Revisado: 01-20-20
Local Calabasas resident writing an LASD story without doing any research. LASD doesn’t have a robbery homicide unit. That’s LAPD. They have a Homicide Bureau out of Monterey Park, not at Lost Hills Station. The crime lab is not referred to as CSU out of Cal State LA not in Monterey Bay. Not even close to a Bosch novel who at least makes it somewhat believable.

Still a fan
Revisado: 12-01-19
I had the privilege of seeing Elton live three times in my life. He is a brilliant musician, songwriter, and performer. He and Bernie wrote magic together. I personally found his music not to my taste after Captain Fantastic, much like Bowie after Scary Monsters. That’s just me. I lost interest in him through the seventies and beyond because he seemed to become ridiculous. His persona often looked silly, like Michael Jackson. I moved onto the Jam and Clash etc.. which glad to know he was a fan of including Iggy Pop. After listening to his book, I have mixed feelings. Would have rather he included more about making music and artists he liked and collaborated with than his drama. More like the Tina Turner incident and his ball busting with Rod Stewart, and like Dr. John. His story is almost the same as other rock stars. Extravagance, drugs, High Jinx, being a dick to everyone around you, poor business sense, overworked, chasing fame, etc. They all want to heal the world, spend all kinds of effort trying, but can’t manage their own lives. Elton seems like a nice guy until he’s not. I’m still spinning his records, but probably won’t revisit his book. Some of his decisions left a sour taste kind of like Townsend’s book. I also wish Elton narrated it himself.

Historia
The discovery of a dead infant in an Amish barn shakes Lancaster County to its core. But the police investigation leads to a more shocking disclosure: Circumstantial evidence suggests that 18-year-old Katie Fisher, an unmarried Amish woman believed to be the newborn's mother, took the child's life. When Ellie Hathaway, a disillusioned big-city attorney, comes to Paradise, Pennsylvania, to defend Katie, two cultures collide - and for the first time in her high-profile career, Ellie faces a system of justice very different from her own.

Lost Interest
Revisado: 10-11-19
This started out interesting, but flopped into stupidity with the trial so unrealistic and unbelievable that I was laughing. You immediately hate the Amish characters which was what was interesting, but it was too easy to figure out as the story progressed. The characters lied and omitted so much you held no sympathy. I can’t believe I stayed with it to the end. I liked the Storyteller a lot so I thought this one would be good too. Not so much. Narrator was decent though.

They were the last great band of the '60s and the first great band of the '70s. They rose, somewhat unpromisingly, from the ashes of the Yardbirds to become one of the biggest-selling rock bands of all time - and eventually paid the price for it, with disaster, drug addiction, and death.

Just Ok
Revisado: 09-30-19
I’m a huge Zep fan, but thought this book took too much creative indulgence attempting to play the various band members, speculating on what they might have been thinking. The narrator kept me interested, but now I want to read a book that will tell me better from the surviving bands member perspective. Too much mystery and mysticism, which to me wasn’t all that mystical. It was excess beyond excess, that took so much away from the music. If the author is even partially accurate about Plant, why wouldn’t he have moved on?
