Historia
General Fentiman is found dead on the afternoon of November 11 in his armchair at the Bellona Club—just hours after the passing of his wealthy estranged sister. At ninety years old, his physician certifies death by natural causes. The important question, then, is not how he died, but when, as the answer determines the fate of an inheritance worth half a million pounds. If he died after his sister, her fortune stands to go to his grandsons, who are sorely in need of the funds.

Loved it. Repeat listen

Possibly my favorite yet. I love the deeper glimpse you get into Wimsey and the depth of his personality and good points. A solid installment in the Wimsey series, with Sayers classic incisive humor, social commentary, and skill. Mark Meadows does a wonderful job, giving life and clear personality to all the characters. His Wimsey is a delight. I’m so disappointed that the whole series read by Meadows isn’t recorded and available.

Historia
Young Erin Hartsock arrives in Washington DC with ambition—and little interest in politics. However, when she's offered a position on a congresswoman's campaign for the Senate, she's more than happy to flee her dead-end job to take on what she expects will be boring administrative work . . . But as the campaign heats up, disturbing events follow. There's a string of dangerous fires, a violent attack, and a seemingly accidental death. Erin begins to wonder about her colleagues all while they grow suspicious of her.

Classic Barbara Michaels
Revisado: 01-07-25
This is another one of Barbara Michaels solidly enjoyable books. Her gift at character creation and development is a joy, and her writing is as solid as ever. I was hesitant about a narrator other than Barbara Rosenblat, but Elisabeth Ashby does a good job.

Sublime

Wonderful story. Wonderful narration. Complex, poetic, interesting, unexpected, a little bizarre, and the characters are magnificent.

Historia
My name is Amelia Gray. They call me The Graveyard Queen. I've been commissioned to restore an old cemetery in Asher Falls, South Carolina, but I'm coming to think I have another purpose here. Why is there a cemetery at the bottom of Bell Lake? Why am I drawn time and again to a hidden grave I've discovered in the woods? Something is eating away at the soul of this town - this withering kingdom - and it will only be restored if I can uncover the truth.

Good atmosphere, terrible pacing
Revisado: 05-04-24
Kristine Hvam does a fantastic job as usual. Unfortunately the majority of this book is filled with Amelia brooding and making terrible decisions. I almost gave up with 3 hours left to go because I was so exasperated with the main character. She’s constantly acknowledging that she shouldn’t do something, then does it, then broods about it. All while ignoring her intuition. The last 2.5 hours salvaged the book somewhat because things actually happened. The rest was gothic ennui.

Classic golden age mystery with Sayer’s unique humor. Mark Meadows is the perfect narrator for this series and hope they’ll have him do the whole series.

Good Concept, Unfortunate Execution
Revisado: 09-06-22
The idea is great, and it starts out promising, but tends to go downhill from there. Recognizable characters are running on and off stage without any character development. Too many fairytales mashed together without a lot of depth. The whole thing felt a bit patchwork and poorly executed. It's one of the few books that took me forever to finish because I had to keep listening in tiny chunks and switching to something else when I got exasperated.
My biggest issue was that this was surprisingly insipid. Long passages about "true love" and royal heritage. Sort of took the worst parts of Disney and added a "twist" to make it seem modern. Definitely some major issues surrounding privilege and whitewashing on top of being sickly sweet.
