Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

A Heartfelt and Harrowing Journey
Revisado: 02-22-25
Revisited this book and finished it in a single day. It’s an easy to read, heartwarming, and incredibly sad story of hope, perseverance, and healing. The raw honesty of the narrative had me tearing up, laughing, and nodding along. It’s an incredible story about incredible people. It is a testament to the resilience of those forgotten - the “left behinds.”
What a book. What a story. What a journey.
The only unexpected turn for me was in the conclusion, where the author eludes that what has happened to Hillbillies (families and kids like him) is not the fault of corporations or politicians, but rather of personal choices and individual responsibility. While self-reliance and reclaiming autonomy are vital, it seems to absolve the role of dehumanizing policies and ruthless corporate practices that have contributed to the struggles of these communities. Acknowledging systemic failures does not negate personal agency, I would also refrain from excusing policies and business models that thrive at the expense of the most vulnerable.
Despite this, the book remains a deeply moving and thought-provoking, filled with hope, kindliness and empathy. The very kind of story that leaves a warm imprint on your soul that lingers long after the last page.

Historia
We all keep secrets. 97 per cent of us are hiding a secret right now, and on average we each hold thirteen at any one time. They are the stuff of gossip, of novels and of classic dramas; secrets form a major part of our hidden inner lives. Podcaster Andrew Gold knows this better than anyone. A public persona, he found himself the (unwitting) recipient of hundreds of strangers' most private revelations. This set him on a journey to understand this critical part of our societies and lives. Why do we keep secrets? Why are we fascinated by those of others? What happens to our mind when we confess?

I heard about the book on one of Andrew Gold’s programs on YouTube as I regularly watch them.
I was stunned how engaging and informative the book was! The author pulled out historic events, referenced scientific facts/studies, event mentioned great masterpieces of the Shakespeare and Dostoyevsky while vividly intertwining them with his own lived experience to craft remarkably captivating storyline 🌸
Outstanding!

Historia
In the twentieth century, wealth and power was dictated by access to oil. This century will have different kingmakers, perhaps different wars. We depend on a handful of metals and rare earths to power our phones and computers. Increasingly, we rely on them to power our cars and our homes. Whoever controls these finite commodities will become rich beyond imagining. Sanderson journeys to meet the characters, companies, and nations scrambling for the new resources.

Mindblowing content! Outstanding writing!

I could not stop listening to/reading the book. As passionate pro-environment person, I had no idea about the “dirty/bloody” side of so called environmentally friendly products.
What an eye opener!
I still believe environmentally conscious business making is the only way forward if we want to save the planet but (!) it all takes strict regulations, rigorous monitoring, sophisticated anti corruption measures and dedication.
Thank you for this treasured book!

Historia
Before the First World War, enthusiasm for a borderless world reached its height. International travel, migration, trade, and progressive projects on matters ranging from women's rights to world peace reached a crescendo. Yet in the same breath, an undercurrent of reaction was growing, one that would surge ahead with the outbreak of war and its aftermath. In this sweeping work of history, Tara Zahra examines how nationalism, rather than internationalism, came to ensnare world politics in the early twentieth century.

Outstanding book! Marvellous author!
Revisado: 12-23-23
Captivating storylines based on deep historical research. One can tell Zahra has undergone fascinatingly massive archive work to complete it.
The audio performance was cringy. Could not understand why the narrator kept on mimicking foreign accents. I am sure non-English speaking historic figures communicated amongst themselves in their own languages and hence did not have accents while speaking. Accent making was so notorious that i switched to the paper based book
