I love Bill Maher. He really is a national treasure. His take on things--that for the great majority, our politics lie somewhere in the middle--is so refreshingly honest. So I've been laid up with a broken hip this past week and this book has been a lifesaver. Now Bill is on vacation for a few weeks, so i have to listen to his podcast if I missed any epidodes. Buying this book is a treat at twice the price!
THANK YOU, BILL!

Historia
From cherished memories of weekends she spent as a child with her indulgent Nana to the reality of the year she spent "ladysitting" her now frail grandmother, Lorene Cary journeys through stories of their time together and five generations of their African American family. Brilliantly weaving a narrative of her relationship with Nana - a fierce, stubborn, and independent woman, who managed a business until she was 100 - Cary looks at Nana's impulse to control people and fate, from the death of her mother and oppression in the Jim Crow South to living on her own in her New Jersey home.

Ms. Carey so perfectly captures the love and frustration, absurdities, pain, and humor of caring for an aging loved one through their final time on earth. She's also a very fine narrator who's lovely voice graces her writing with charm and depth.

more about philosophy than finance, disappointed
Revisado: 12-30-18
Although this touts itself as the proven route to early retirement, not surprisingly, you'll hear little that you've not heard somewhere else. If you're into the minimalist movement or extreme frugality, you'll enjoy it. Otherwise, It's a little frustrating to hear how much money we would save if we didn't own a car and had been thoughtful about choosing somewhere to live that was walkable. Although the authors repeatedly try to say there's no judgement, "no blame, no shame," the book is full of snarky comments about, for example, indulging yourself by stopping daily at a bookstore and buying books you'll never read. But what if you do read?
Most of the advice is not new (track all the money coming in and going out--but they insist everything is done accurately to the penny). And some of it is fairly esoteric--computing the value of one hour of your life-energy.
What the book doesn't acknowledge is that unless you read this before you've made any major life decisions like college, kids, marriage, home--following their nine step plan could be almost completely unrealistic. There's some reasonable advice that you've read before, but the heart of it glorifies stories of people like the woman who started The Tightwad Gazette.

Historia
Reese Witherspoon’s grandmother Dorothea always said a combination of beauty and strength made Southern women “whiskey in a teacup”. We may be delicate and ornamental on the outside, she said, but inside, we’re strong and fiery. Reese’s Southern heritage informs her whole life, and she loves sharing the joys of Southern living with practically everyone she meets. She takes the South wherever she goes with bluegrass, big holiday parties, and plenty of Dorothea’s fried chicken.

Delightful as usual, and I can't imagine anyone but Lizette lecat narrating. I did have a little issue with the author's take on Mma. Ramotswa's reactions regarding the election--these did not seem quite true to the character of someone we've come to know and love. Very much enjoyed Charlie's evolution.

made me wonder if she's ok...?
Revisado: 03-17-18
I've enjoyed her comedy over the years, and reviews of the book encouraged me to give it a try. and parts of it genuinely are funny. But hearing her talk about being broke in a way I took to be not a joke, her many references to seemingly everything in her house smelling like cat pee, not having a table the four of them could sit at to eat a meal or having living room furniture that had been destroyed by pets and was only slightly useable, and what sounds like a lot of clutter, made the funny parts seem less funny. But then she also mentions having a nanny and an assistant. Everyone has a right to live as they please, but there was enough to make me wonder if she's actually ok.
