Historia
It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart.

Searing story; superlative narration
Revisado: 02-27-17
What made the experience of listening to The Nix the most enjoyable?
Ari Fliakos nailed every single character in this sprawling novel and made this an extraordinary pleasure to listen to. He captured every nuance of the jaded, lost, discouraged and ultimately hopeful characters. Great job -- and the novel was pretty good too!

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Read the Luminaries Instead!
Revisado: 06-21-14
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Donna Tartt could have written a more disciplined book with a more engaging main character. I had just finished The Luminaries and the skill of the writing, plotting, and character development was just miles above Donna Tartt's effort -- even though they seemed to be attempting the same rich, Dickensian story approach.

Historia
Told in alternating perspectives by a varied and vocal cast of characters, Nussbaum pulls back the curtain to reveal the complicated and funny and tough life inside the walls of an institution for juveniles with disabilities. From Yessenia Lopez, who dreams of her next boyfriend and of one day of living outside those walls, to Teddy, a resident who dresses up daily in a full suit and tie, to Mia, who guards a terrifying secret, Nussbaum has crafted a multifaceted portrait of a way of life hidden from most of us.

Fantastic performances; moving and inspiring story
Revisado: 03-15-14
Where does Good Kings Bad Kings rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Because I serve people with developmental disabilities in my professional life, I was intrigued to listen to this award-winning book. Different narrators voice the different characters and do so with the liveliness of actual stage performances. I loved it!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Good Kings Bad Kings?
The whole book was well plotted and the little "reveals" about each character were all memorable.
Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?
I have to say I liked them all!
