A bridge too far!
Revisado: 02-01-10
I have enjoyed so many P D James novels but after "The Private Patient", I'm over it.
This book is ponderously slow - it is simply boring. There are detailed descriptions of every face, house, piece of furniture culminating in a description of traffic lights changing. In the meantime the plot inches forward.
Baroness James - time to retire from published writing - it's over!

Historia
After the bloody confrontation in Appaloosa, Everett Hitch heads into the afternoon sun and ends up in Resolution, an Old West town so new the dust has yet to settle. It's the kind of town that doesn't have much in the way of commerce, except for a handful of saloons and some houses of ill repute.

Rootin, Tootin, Shootin!
Revisado: 11-28-08
A real old time gunslinger story with plenty of goodies, baddies, saloon girls, whiskey and, above all, the dry quip. Uh huh! Yep! There were many "I said" followed by "He Said" statements which should have been edited out as they are obvious from the character voices but overall it is a good narration. Light and enjoyable.

Classy!
Revisado: 11-28-08
I am yet to be disappointed by a Michael Connelly book and "Brass Verdict" was no exception. Connelly combines Harry Bosch and "the Lincoln Lawyer" in this story which has many twists and keeps you interested all the way. Classy and well narrated!

Suspend reality anyone who enters here! This book makes "Indiana Jones" look like non-fiction. If you can cope with man eating snake on a Carribean Island then this is for you.
How could this book be a best seller - it defies imagination?

One out of the top drawer!
Revisado: 06-04-05
This was my third P D James after Death in Holy Orders and the Murder Room and I thoroughly enjoyed it - as I did the other two. It is a little slow to develop but by a quarter of the way in it really has you hooked. The pressure builds to a big finish. Michael Joyston as narrator does not have the superlative English dialect skills of the narrator in the other two books but he is certainly no slouch. For mine it dead heats with Death in Holy Orders as an outstandingly good listen. Highly recommended.

Really good listen
Revisado: 06-04-05
I'd previously listened to Robert Parker's "Potshot" and enjoyed it. This book has the same mix of old style private eye, tough guy, glamorous and intelligent girlfriend, sexual references etc and it all works - and works well. The narration is first class and fits the character of the book; the plot gets you in and is well developed. I really enjoyed this listen and recommend it to others who want a light and stimulating thriller / detective story.

Don't think John Pinette is funny just because he's fat and is always talking about food. What's wrong with you? Don't you eat? Even if you don't tip the scale, you'll be able to find common ground with his hysterical routines that have landed him appearances on such important stages as
Caroline's Comedy Hour,
Showtime's Comedy All Stars, and
An Evening at the Improv. Or perhaps you already know Pinette as the "fat mugging victim" on the last episode of
Seinfeld.

No subtle humour in this one. Just loud, raw, smutty, toilet humour that's not particularly funny. Not memorable and very missable.

Historia
The setting itself is elemental P. D. James: the bleak coast of East Anglia, where atop a sweep of low cliffs stands the small theological college of St. Anselm’s. On the shore not far away, smothered beneath a fall of sand, lies the body of one of the school’s young ordinands. He is the son of Sir Alred Treves, a hugely successful and flamboyant businessman who is accustomed to getting what he wants—and in this case what he wants is Commander Adam Dalgliesh to investigate his son’s death.

This is the best audio book I've heard. The narration is excellent, perfectly paced for the subject, with great accents. The plot and characterisation sustain interest throughout.

Jewels!
Revisado: 07-05-04
I found these "period piece" short stories an absolute delight. Imperialism, racism and class culture are rampant throughout - not "politically acceptable" in today's world but they define an earlier period.
Few authors can observe and write as well today.
The pace and quality of the narration compliments the high standard of the stories.
Most enjoyable listening.

Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six. They were married when Clare was twenty-three and Henry was thirty-one. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future.

Not for me!
Revisado: 06-23-04
Initially I found it difficult to follow the time travelling sequences in this book. When I did pick up what was going on in "time travel land", I became bored with the continual sequence of time changes. It works as a love story, its concluding stages are poignant and emotion stirring but the narration does not do the characters justice. I am fascinated that so many reviewers have appraised this book so highly. Individual differences, I guess. Not for me - I was glad when it finished.
