Historia
Former spy Maggie Bird came to the seaside village of Purity, Maine, eager to put the past behind her after a mission went tragically wrong. These days, she’s living quietly on her chicken farm, still wary of blowback from the events that forced her early retirement. But when a body turns up in Maggie’s driveway, she knows it’s a message from former foes who haven’t forgotten her. Maggie turns to her local circle of old friends—all retirees from the CIA—to help uncover the truth about who is trying to kill her, and why.

Historia
Sonny Lamb is an affable, if floundering, rancher with the unfortunate habit of becoming a punchline in his Texas hometown. Most recently, to everyone’s headshaking amusement, he bought his own bull at an auction. But when a fire breaks out at a neighbor’s farm, Sonny makes headlines in another way: not waiting for help, he bolts to the farm where his heroic actions make the evening news.

Incredible satire that explains much of today’s political environment
Revisado: 09-23-23
Although it is i tended as a satire about Texas politics, it seems more a cautionary tale about America. Wright does an incredible job of untangling the web of political corruption, lobbying influences and power brokers. Scary clear.
This novel needs to be resurrected as a mini-series.

Historia
In When McKinsey Comes to Town, two prizewinning investigative journalists have written a portrait of the company sharply at odds with its public image. Bogdanich and Forsythe have penetrated the veil of secrecy surrounding McKinsey by conducting hundreds of interviews, obtaining tens of thousands of revelatory documents, and following rule #1 of investigative reporting: Follow the money. When McKinsey Comes to Town is a a devastating portrait of a firm whose work has often made the world more unequal, more corrupt, and more dangerous.

Historia
Given the importance of what they do, and the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of this country only four active federal judges have been murdered. Judge Raymond Fawcett has just become number five.... Nothing is as it seems and everything’s fair game in this wickedly clever new novel from John Grisham, the undisputed master of the legal thriller.

Historia
The Supreme Court has always had the authority to issue emergency rulings in exceptional circumstances. But since 2017, the Court has dramatically expanded its use of the behind-the-scenes “shadow docket,” regularly making decisions that affect millions of Americans without public hearings and without explanation, through cryptic late-night rulings that leave lawyers—and citizens—scrambling. But Americans of all political stripes should be worried about what the shadow docket portends for the rule of law, argues Supreme Court expert Stephen Vladeck.

An incredible book and narration. Bravo Stephen Vladeck
Revisado: 06-26-23
Stephen Vladeck has done an incredible service of clearly giving the backstory that explains how the US Supreme Court works. His analysis shows the reader how SCOTUS creates an alternate universe outside of what is constitutionally intended then passes off its rulings as morally sound. Vladeck exposing this chicanery helps one to understand that the reason some rulings create discontent and anger is because they violate American values and do don’t reflect our moral best.

Disturbingly Reflective of America Now
Revisado: 06-17-22
I’d hoped for a phoenix rising from the ashes; or hope springs eternal. Instead we are riveted by truth. We accept the politicization of the courts and the influence of of money in politics at all levels. The story shows how distressingly easy our democracy is upended and how corrupt behavior becomes normalized and institutionalized. A must read for EVERY elected official and concerned citizen.

Historia
Six close friends shaped the role their country would play in the dangerous years following World War II. They were the original best and brightest, whose towering intellects, outsize personalities, and dramatic actions would bring order to the postwar chaos, and whose strong response to Soviet expansionism would leave a legacy that dominates American policy to this day. In April 1945, they converged to advise an untutored new president, Harry Truman.

It is time for everyone to move beyond icons and heroes and read perspectives based in meticulous research showing that it is flesh and blood men who make America what she is.
Fascinating book. Enthralling. I now understand better the good, the bad and the ugly of American political decision making. Too bad the Wise Men’s sense of AmericanLivesMatter are not replicated through subsequent generations.

Historia
The transition from President Donald J. Trump to President Joseph R. Biden Jr. stands as one of the most dangerous periods in American history. But as number one internationally best-selling author Bob Woodward and acclaimed reporter Robert Costa reveal for the first time, it was far more than just a domestic political crisis. Woodward and Costa interviewed more than 200 people at the center of the turmoil, resulting in more than 6,000 pages of transcripts - and a spellbinding and definitive portrait of a nation on the brink.

Affirms my own insight
Revisado: 10-10-21
Without the details or being privy to any of this, the authors provide support and evidence for the opinions many of us had figured out.
I was not impressed by the overlapping of Joe Biden with Donald Trump. The peril we felt is singularly Trump’s. Joe Biden has just started to write history— against a backstory of being a WarBaby and as nearly a 1/2 century as a Washington insider and politician. Unfair to try and sully him in a Trump story.
