Revisado: 05-28-24
This is my new favorite book to recommend! It's especially relevant now. In "The Social Brain: The Psychology of Successful Groups," Tracey Camilleri highlights the crucial role of social connections and group dynamics in navigating the tech industry’s challenges, like layoffs and AI integration. The book underscores the importance of maintaining these connections to bolster morale and engagement, particularly during organizational shifts. Camilleri advocates for transparent communication and shared goals to rebuild trust and align team efforts with corporate objectives. As AI reshapes roles, strengthening the human social fabric becomes essential for smooth transitions and sustained innovation in tech environments.
"The Social Brain" offers valuable strategies for harnessing the power of social neuroscience to sustain a resilient and innovative team environment. In doing so, companies can not only survive but thrive amid the uncertainty, harnessing their social capital as a powerful tool for navigating change.

Revisado: 11-06-23
"Extreme Ownership" delves into principles underpinning elite, Navy SEAL leadership in a captivating narrative. They emphasize the importance of taking full responsibility for one's actions and outcomes. This message of accountability has resonated with many I know that read this book. Few realize these authors wrote a follow-on book The authors recognized that their initial emphasis on extreme ownership could be misconstrued, leading to a rigid, black-and-white approach that could stifle creativity, collaboration and growth within their team.
In their subsequent book, "The Dichotomy of Leadership," Willink and Babin introduce the concept of "dichotomy thinking," which suggests that effective leaders embrace the paradoxical nature of leadership, balancing discipline with adaptability, structure with flexibility, and decisiveness with empathy. This refined perspective addresses the potential drawbacks of extreme ownership, encouraging leaders to find a balance between accountability and empathy, creating an environment where team members feel empowered to contribute while also being held accountable for their actions.
I recommend going straight to their second book where they have refined their thinking to a more nuanced depiction of the complexities involved in being a great leader.

Resonates very well with what I've experienced
Revisado: 11-05-23
Bill was at the helm when I joined Intuit. I still remember when he decided to leave that one of the most important thing a leader should do is to choose and groom the person so as to set them up for success. Bill did this very well with Brad Smith, and while Brad certainly had many great assets of his own to bring to the table, he also continued to promote many of the values described in this book.
So much of this book resonates so well with me and my time at various startups in Silicon Valley over the last 30 years.
I've listened to it several times since it came out and continue to discover nuggets that are applicable at whatever company I'm at.
This leadership playbook informs so well how many of Silicon Valley's successful companies have achieved success.

Leadership Mindset 2.0 is the seemingly counterintuitive, yet most effective approach to quickly becoming a top-tier leader. The kind of leader that is truly confident, strategically effective, and creates highly engaged, skilled, and productive teams in any organization lucky enough to have them. Better yet, this leadership “system” empowers leaders to do all of this WITHOUT unsustainable, unhealthy, or unethical bully tactics, micromanaging, or 24/7 work schedules.

Leadershp Mindset 2.0 is relevant in a VUCA World
Revisado: 11-05-23
In "Leadership Mindset 2.0," Anderson challenges the traditional notions of leadership and proposes perspectives that are gaining more and more traction and are rooted not only in psychology and neuroscience but also in his personal experience with leading companies through good and challenging times.
His anecdotes and suggestions resonate very well with my experiences helping lead several startups to success.
Anderson outlines four key phases of growth leadership:
- Self-Mastery: Building a strong foundation of self-awareness, self-regulation, and emotional intelligence.
- Strategic Thinking: Developing the ability to analyze complex situations, identify opportunities, and formulate effective plans.
- People Leadership: Understanding human behavior, motivating teams, and creating a positive and productive work environment.
- Results Leadership: Achieving goals, executing strategies, and delivering sustainable impact.
Some salient points made:
- Leadership is not about being perfect; it's about being authentic and willing to learn.
- The best leaders empower others to take ownership and make decisions.
- Creating a positive and supportive work environment is essential for team success.
- Leaders need to be able to communicate effectively and build trust with their teams.
- Continuous learning and development are crucial for effective leadership.
"Leadership Mindset 2.0" is a valuable resource for anyone who wants to become a more effective leader in our VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous) world.
Anderson's insights are grounded in research and experience, and his recommendations are practical and actionable.

Still Very Relevant
Revisado: 11-05-23
While it may seem like we've all learned these lessons, we haven't really. There are employees that discovered they love working remote or have moved away that actually are quitting their jobs when employers require them to return. And yet, as employers, many of us are requiring people to come back into the office part or full time as we haven't figured out how to truly build "an Engaged, Resilient and Agile Virtual Workforce"
We might think, it's employer's market: if people don't want to work under the conditions we offer, there are plenty of others that will. Do we really want to have a team of people willing to work under our conditions, or do we want to be able to hire employees that are good enough to be able to choose how they like to work - when it is their impact to the business that really matters most?
Also, in uncertain economic times, companies are again looking to offshore some of their workforce - how do you manage them effectively? Having worked with fully remote and also with offshore teams, I find Michael's insights and suggestions relevant, applicable and helpful.
