Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

what changed?
Revisado: 01-17-25
i greatly enjoyed the beginning of the book. stories about his childhood, family, and faith. then like other reviews have stated, closer towards the end it just loses something. the stories become more current, things we already know. it just lost its fun, I guess.

family drama and deception
Revisado: 05-24-24
I don't know what I was expecting from this book but it far surpassed my expectations. I enjoyed all the time line jumps and telling of the story from different points of view. sometimes when stories are told that way they can be difficult to follow. I didn't fond that to be the case with this one. very good and highly recommended.

Historia
At last, the full story behind Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman's epic romance, including stories, portraits, and the occasional puzzle. How did they do it? They came from completely different families, endured a significant age difference, and were separated by the gulf of several social strata. Megan loved books and art history; Nick loved hammers. But much more than these seemingly unsurpassable obstacles were the values they held in common: respect, decency, the ability to mention genitalia in almost any context, and an abiding obsession with the songs of Tom Waits.

I enjoy both Megan and Nick so I thought it would be great to hear theor work together. it was okay. I did outwardly laugh several times but overall I was bored. it was like one big comedic inside joke that the reader/listener wasn't in on and they just kept talking about it. it was kinda all over the place with each taking turns talking. which is fine for audio but I can't even imagine how that would read in a physical book. overall, glad I completed it but I won't be reading it again and I doubt it recommend it to anyone.

just okay
Revisado: 03-17-24
narration was fine. but the story was very cheesey. I will admit I only purchased this book because I wanted to broaden my horizons and step outside of my typical genres. this was the first book selection for part of a bookclub I joined. from very soon on, I knew this book wasn't going to be "for me." but I knew I was going to finish it anyway because 1. I bought it and 2. I wanted to truly give it a shot.
there is never a threat of being caught. no mention of consequences, police. not realistic at all. nearly the whole book is to murderers pining after each other like school kids on a playground but never having the guts to be adults and actually talk to one another. speckled with very descriptive murder scenes and then right back to juvenile thoughts of "oh does he love me?," "I hope she likes me." just stupid.
the smut parts of the story were oookayy-ish. still not my taste but it just felt like it fit in the story in a weird way. like the story was a slow build for the entirety then mass explosions of afterthought the writer realized needed to be in the book to actually make it a story and have an actual conclusion.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Honest, real, a mirror into my childhood
Revisado: 10-11-18
This! Everything about this story explains all the difficult thoughts. feelings, and events of my own childhood. Somethings I'd never understood until reading this story. Makes me a little more proud of where I have come from rather than embarrassed or ashamed. The author's story is so similar to that of my own, even down to the names of his grandparents that essentially raised him, Mammaw and Pappaw. Thank you for this story and helping me to understand more of my own childhood family events.
Even if you dont come from this same type of background, there is a lot to be learned from this story. It is so real. The desperation, pride, family struggles, strength, and love that all come from this class of people. No truer story!

I wish the story was as good as the hype
Revisado: 09-28-18
I went into this jazzed and excited. Ready to be motivated and pumped up. To find some sort of personal drive or growth for myself. I was disappointed and almost annoyed altogether at the amount of times in which she talked about her "company she started", "her blog", "her online community of women." I understand being damn proud of your dream. I'm proud of her as well. But several times she talked about it within the story, I had to check and make sure I didnt accidentally jump back several chapters. Over and over. My favorite chapters were the ones where she talked about being a mother, and the struggles of being a working mom. she had many great points and things for me to think over. I just wont be buying the hard copy version as well as I had originally planned.

While the performance of this book wasnt bad, the change in voices for the male characters was a bit ridiculous and distracting. At times I found this book hard to finish but it did wrap up okay and had a decent up lifting ending.

Funny and Honest Truth
Revisado: 04-03-18
I loved this book and the reading of it. Throughout the book he discusses things that most everyone has struggled with in their faith but he explains it in such an honest way. This is a feel good, religious book. not a book that guilts you or makes you feel terrible about yourself.
