Historia
Sherlock Holmes is an unparalleled genius who uses the gift of deduction and reason to solve the most vexing of crimes. Warlock Holmes, however, is an idiot. A good man, perhaps; a font of arcane power, certainly. But he’s brilliantly dim. Frankly, he couldn’t deduce his way out of a paper bag. The only things he has really got going for him are the might of a thousand demons and his stalwart flatmate. Thankfully, Dr. Watson is always there to aid him through the treacherous shoals of Victorian propriety...

British Humor at its Best!
Revisado: 04-10-17
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes! If they enjoy British humor reminiscent of Terry Pratchett, then this is the way to go. This book contains 3 separate stories, but they flow together beautifully. The tone is tongue-in-cheek but not slapstick. It has a charm and warmth that had me loving the main characters (Warlock Holmes and Watson) within the first chapter and the secondary characters within the second chapter. Couple this with the perfect pairing of narrator Robert Garson and it's a book I can listen to over again!
What other book might you compare Warlock Holmes to and why?
Terry Pratchett's Disc World. A winking comedy set within a fascinating world. The play on Sherlock's name is definitely a good clue of what's coming.
Which character – as performed by Robert Garson – was your favorite?
Warlock, definitely. But I think he'd not be near so endearing and humorous without his Watson!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I fell in love with the author/narrator. Watson's incredulity balances Warlock's excesses beautifully.
Any additional comments?
I have found that Denning has an anticipated Kindle edition due out in May that will continue these characters. I fully intend to buy it and I HOPE (Please!!!) that there will shortly be an audio version narrated by Garson. After that...would it be too much to ask for an ongoing series???

I love Harrison's books but.....
Revisado: 12-29-16
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Honestly, if you love snarky adventure, Mr. Harrison's books are for you. But I can't recommend this audible version because of the reader. His stilted, mechanical reading sucked all the pleasure from a book I've enjoyed for decades.
Would you be willing to try another one of Jim Roberts’s performances?
Absolutely not
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The story is AMAZING. The reader was the problem.
Any additional comments?
Read this book in printed form. I guarantee, you won't be disappointed.

Excellent narrator but not much of a story
Revisado: 08-22-16
The narrator made the story. Otherwise, there's really no plot here. I enjoyed the first book and eagerly bought this one. Unfortunately, while it still has the wry humor I thoroughly enjoyed in book 1, it does not contain the elements of a mystery or even a novel. I'd liken it more to a young girl's diary. Not much thought, but tons of emotion. The ghost in this book is only a footnote and is not even resolved. If you're looking for humor and a light, uninvolved chick tale, this is it.

Historia
"It is the heart of this place, and it is dying," says the Beast. And it is true; the center of the Beast's palace, the glittering glasshouse that brings Beauty both comfort and delight in her strange new environment, is filled with leafless brown rosebushes. But deep within this enchanted world, new life, at once subtle and strong, is about to awaken. Twenty years ago Robin McKinley enthralled listeners with the power of Beauty. Now this extraordinarily gifted novelist retells the story of Beauty and the Beast again - but in a totally new way, with fresh perspective, ingenuity, and mature insight.

I liked her first version better
Revisado: 01-23-16
This book is much more mystical than the first. The theme centers and roses and then brings up roses in almost every sentence. If the main character isn't remembering the scent of them, she's discovering their name, finding them in her garden, cultivating them, collecting them, saving them, glorying in them, pruning them, tying them up, making wreaths, learning stories about them, making friends of them....I think you get the picture. So did I. Very quickly. No need for so *much* repetition. The main character and her sisters were well fleshed out, but no one else was. The beast barely got a look in. And I'm not at all sure what happened at the end. Just lots and lots of roses and symbolism. A good read for some who enjoy nuance but for those who are looking for a good story....maybe not.

Top that off with a sister who has joined the suffragette movement (shocking!), Madame Lefoux's latest mechanical invention, and a plague of zombie porcupines and Alexia barely has time to remember she happens to be eight months pregnant. Narrator and story perfect for each other. There are some longer than usual pauses in narration, but they didn't bother me at all. The story was engrossing enough to keep my interest all the way thru.

Historia
Take one bored princess. Make her the seventh daughter in a very proper royal family. Have her run away. Add one powerful, fascinating, dangerous dragon. Princess Cimerone has never met anyone (or anything) like the dragon Kazul. But then, she's never met a witch, a jinn, a death-dealing talking bird or a stone prince either. Princess Cimerone ran away to find some excitement. She's found plenty.

Regrettable
Revisado: 12-30-15
What disappointed you about Dealing with Dragons?
The story is probably perfect for young children (up to 6). The reading is over-enthusiastic and over-acted, like a elementary school play. The theme is simplistic. I had listen d to the author's Frontier Magic series and was very impressed. I hoped to find more along the same caliber.
What was most disappointing about Patricia C. Wrede’s story?
The very juvenile plot vies with the poor narration.
How could the performance have been better?
Different narrators would help. Someone like Ronconi, who doesn't kill any hope of finding interest in the story with over-the-top over-acting.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
All of the above.
Any additional comments?
If you have a very young child, one who thinks Doctor Seuss is the epitome of literature, then this is a viable choice. Otherwise, I suggest a different selection. And avoid this repertory company for any selection unless you enjoy elementary school plays and ham acting.

Cannot Recommend
Revisado: 09-21-15
Would you try another book from P. G. Wodehouse and/or Frederick Davidson?
The story is slow to start with uninteresting dialogue. Quite unlike Wodehouse's usual fast, snappy starts. Also, regrettably, Davidson reads this slow start with a bored, disinterest that makes paying attention almost impossible. I love Wodehouse usually, but I'd return this one pronto if I could.
What didn’t you like about Frederick Davidson’s performance?
His reading has a disinterested, supercilious air that, coupled with a slow plot, makes the book a yawner.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Not really. I wish it had because I love Wodehouse usually.

This one is a real dud
Revisado: 06-26-15
What disappointed you about Fable?
Have you ever read a Barbara Cartland romance? One where the protagonist female is completely incapable and yet the subject of every manly man's macho dream? Yep--there's a treacly similarity here folks. This is a superb example of a female who apparently has all the logic ability of a zonked wombat and is guaranteed to scream at *least* 5 times per chapter. She can be counted on to make all the wrong decisions tho a 1st grader would have no difficulty. This is a Mary Sue story gone horribly wrong to the brain deadening, nose dripping, gag reflex inducing detriment of unsuspecting readers. The first book started great and finished not too terribly. The second spiraled rapidly.... I can only blame desperate boredom and the disbelief that it could not get any worse that prompted me to try this one..... Mea culpa.
Would you ever listen to anything by Chanda Hahn again?
Nope
What does Khristine Hvam bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
She gives her all to the performance.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment....regret....nausea......
Any additional comments?
If you like Mary Sue books with moronic heroes and improbable relationships built upon destructive impulses, then this is the series for you. If not...you've been warned.....

Historia
Jane is a young New York woman who never seems to find the right man - perhaps because of her secret obsession with Mr. Darcy, as played by Colin Firth in the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. When a wealthy relative bequeaths her a trip to an English resort catering to Austen-obsessed women, however, Jane's fantasies of meeting the perfect Regency-era gentleman suddenly become more real than she ever could have imagined. Is this total immersion in a fake Austenland enough to make Jane kick the Austen obsession for good?

Made me laugh out loud!
Revisado: 06-16-15
What made the experience of listening to Austenland the most enjoyable?
This is so RIGHT! I was laughing out loud within 2 minutes. It's a girly story with all or romantically guilty secrets trotted out for us to squirm over even as we laugh. The best book I've gotten in a lamentable while. Only con: too short! :)
Who was your favorite character and why?
Jane, of course!
What does Katherine Kellgren bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Her sly, winking performance makes her a friend sharing secrets. She brings out the "gossip" feel while also evoking the comfort you get from a friend who listens to your most embarrassing romantic confessions and always makes you fell better.
Who was the most memorable character of Austenland and why?
I haven't finished the book--I'm writing this before I even get to chpt 2. (Ok, it's good and I don't have a speck of reserve in my character.)
