So disappointed in this author
Revisado: 04-01-23
I have been listening to this series. Here are direct quotes from the book, "My father had been careful to tell us that police officers outside of Green Valley were not inherently bad people, but that police and law enforcement in general, those institutions, would not be looking out for our best interest." and to the brother, "that when he grew up the world would perceive him as a big scary black man."
So apparently, this author, who in her immense genius understands all law enforcement agencies across the country, somehow knows the intent of all law enforcement agencies, and the intent is race-based. So let's take a step out of fiction and back to reality. The people who are living racist lives in this country are the ones that are judging people based on the color of their skin, as this author clearly does. Being born white does not make you racist. Nor does it mean you grew up entitled or had any better opportunities than anyone else. I have relatives that are retired police officers, and they have never treated people of color any differently than the white people they interacted with. They have been shot at, physically attacked by weapon-wielding perpetrators, yelled at, cussed at, and spit at for no other reason than doing their job. Despite that, they got up every morning and did their job without anger or malice. It's sick the way authors like this regurgitate this crap. There are good and bad in every profession, but the majority of police officers are just trying to do a good job. And I have no doubt that I personally know a hell of a lot more of them than this author does.
Her clearly anti-police viewpoint aside, I was confused by book 4.5. I started and stopped listening to it because of spoilers and started Dr. Strange Beard, book 5. Apparently, book 4.5 has both spoilers and information you need to understand big leaps between books 4 and 5. A strange way to set a series. Half books generally are not integral to the next book in line. Doesn't matter, though; I will not be reading any further trash from this author.

Cute book for pre-teens
Revisado: 08-23-21
I got this book because I read on a blog post that this was a Harry Potter-type book. It's not. This is a book meant for children whose parents want to teach the lesson of not judging people because they are different. A cute book but not anywhere in the realm of Harry Potter. The only similarity is the kids have magical powers. Clearly the blogger didn't read this book. If you have a pre-teen, they would probably enjoy this book.

Mixed Feelings
Revisado: 10-31-20
The story was fine, but I'm not sure if I like the new narrator. It's kind of weird that the narrator changed three quarters of the way through the series, Veronica Meunch has a pleasant voice but there were times I didn't like her portrayal of the characters. She makes the two main male characters sound very similar. They're not exact, there's definitely a difference, but I feel like it's subtle enough that you really have to be paying attention. I found my mind wandering and would have to rewind because I couldn't always ell whether Sean or Thorpe was speaking.

Historia
When Marshall McEwan left his hometown at age 18, he vowed never to return. The trauma that drove him away ultimately spurred him to become one of the most successful journalists in Washington DC. But just as the political chaos in the nation’s capital lifts him to new heights, Marshall is forced to return home in spite of his boyhood vow. His father is dying, his mother is struggling to keep the family newspaper from failing, and the town is in the midst of an economic rebirth that might be built upon crimes that reach into the state capitol - and perhaps even to Washington.

Disappointed and duped!
Revisado: 05-12-19
I wanted to enjoy listening to this book. I have been a fan of Greg Iles for years. But apparently like most in Hollywood, this author feels his entitled, political rants must be shoved down our throats. I was willing to ignore the continued Trump slights. I am used to people with opposing political views insisting I be inundated with their political propaganda at every turn. However at the point I listened to the following statement, "...not even security cameras stopped the angry trump supporter who simply wore a mask as he marched up to the windows with brick in hand to make his feelings known" I stopped listening. Enough already people! I understand you have a political view. And you have every right to share that view in your personal space, or should I call it your safe space. But don't dupe me into purchasing a book you have me believing is a mystery to find out what I am really getting is an author's personal political views disguised in a story. Save your political issues for a political opinion book, Facebook, your own website, or God forbid, the polls. I do not want to listen to it and I do not want to pay for it.

Kieran Finnegan, who still works there whenever she can, has become a criminal psychologist - a fitting reaction, perhaps, to her less-than-lawful past. Worth The Credit
Revisado: 03-30-16
I really enjoyed this novel. I didn't look at the length when I purchased it so I wish it was longer, but it had a nice ending. The dialogue was occasionally corny and the author tends to use the same descriptive words in consecutive sentences which I thought was a little weird; but other than that it's a pretty good book and I recommend it.

I met Jamie Fraser when I was 19 years old. He was tall, redheaded, and, at our first meeting at least, a virgin. I fell in love hard, fast, and completely. He knew how to ride a horse, wield a sword, and stitch a wound. He was, in fact, the perfect man. That he was fictional hardly entered into it.

It would probably be better to read it yourself
Revisado: 03-27-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Ordinarily, I would finish a book before writing a review; but I'm only about an hour and a half into it and I'm not sure that I want to listen to the rest. So far the story seems cute. I'm a huge fan of the "Outlander" series so I thought this would be a fun story. For he most part, I'm enjoying he story line. There are some references that readers might not understand if they have not read the "Outlander" books. For example, the protagonist says "Herself" when referring to Diana Gabaldon in the story. In "Outlander", Jamie and Claire are referred to as Himself and Herself by their tenants, so I'm assuming the use of "Herself" is a play on that. I think this story would be more enjoyable if someone else was narrating it. I've rarely heard a more annoying voice than what is coming out of my headphones when this book is playing. This narrator's attempt at a Scottish accent is beyond atrocious. I spend 5 months living in Scotland during college so I'm familiar with the lilt. Personally, I find the Scottish accent to be very pleasant. But I felt physical pain when listening to this woman's imitation. She also has an unpleasant voice in general. When I first turned on the book I was very surprised because her voice is high pitched, but almost gravely at he same time, and she squeaks sometimes... like if Minnie Mouse were a smoker. Her voice kept making me think of an older woman who is reading the part of a 12 year old. I think maybe she would be good at narrating Judy Bloom novels, or the Sweet Valley High books. She was definitely not the right choice for this novel; someone else could have done the characters more justice and brought the story to life.
What did you like best about this story?
It's hard to say since I haven't finished it yet. But there is definitely some humor in the main character's thought process.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Romy Nordlinger?
Good God anyone! Anyone at all! I'm sure there are many narrators who would do a wonderful job with this story. I think Kathleen Early has a pleasant voice, though I've only heard her narrate dramatic stories. The first person who popped into my head was Lorelei King. She is really great at character voices. She also has read almost all of the books written by Janet Evanovich so she does well with the nuances of fun quirky stories. I think she would have brought out the humor in this book and made it more relatable.
Was Finding Fraser worth the listening time?
It would probably be worth the time it takes to just read it.

Good book but sad. Read with caution
Revisado: 01-26-14
Where does Petals on the Wind rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Not my favorite but not my least favorite either
Would you be willing to try another book from V. C. Andrews? Why or why not?
Not if they're as sad as this one.
What does Alyssa Bresnahan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Personable characters,
If you could take any character from Petals on the Wind out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Paul because he seems to be the most sincere character.
Any additional comments?
This is a very well written story with complex situations and dynamic characters. However, the sad parts of the story significantly overwhelm the happy moments. So much so that, if you're like me and get wrapped up in novels, you may feel emotionally drained by the time you get to the end. I just finished this book today and thinking back on it as I write this review, all that comes to mind is how heartbreaking the majority of this story was. Unlike its prequil Flowers in the Attic, Petals on the Wind does not have a hopeful ending which is unfortunate since there is so much turmoil and woe for multiple characters in the body, it would have been nice if it could have at least ended on a high note. But if you're the type that can objectively read a book without feeling everything the characters feel than you'll probably really like this book.

Excellent Book - A Realistic Biography
Revisado: 08-23-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would highly recommend this book. Both the story and the narrator had my attention from the first paragraph.
What did you like best about this story?
I love that we get the background for both Julia and Paul. Anything that I have seen previously regarding Paul was not in-depth. I love that both Julia and Paul, who had a true love affair that lasted 40+ years, were presented as the human beings they were with all of their faults and foibles and not some perfect super-human beings.
Which character – as performed by Kimberly Farr – was your favorite?
I think Kimberly did a wonderful job by not trying to overdue "the voice" that plagued Julia's maternal family as a result of elongated vocal cords.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Both. I laughed, I cried, I laughed again.
Any additional comments?
I am a review reader, not a review writer as a rule. When I purchased this book, it had one star and no reviews. I normally would not buy a book without reviews as I ALWAYS read reviews before purchasing, especially if the author is not known to me. But I love Julia Child. So I was quite pleased to find this was both wonderfully written and narrated. I have no clue as to why it was initially given one star. I can only say, I was sad to have finished the book. I loved feeling like a close friend to Julia.
