Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Emotions and senses
Revisado: 06-04-23
It is hard to believe this man is a surgeon, so brilliant are his descriptions of life.
Much of this book was torture to read, so true to the human experience.
All of the light and dark emotions were beyond real. I felt every touch and smelled every smell. I loved every character. I felt every turn of a wheel or screech of a train. I smelled the dust, the flowers and the fragrant spices.
I have much experience with doctors and rarely has any been so generous with empathy.
I have traveled to India and been at the water’s edge with every character.

Jack investigates—against the warnings of the police and his own editor—and makes a shocking discovery that connects the crime to other mysterious deaths across the country. Undetected by law enforcement, a vicious killer has been hunting women, using genetic data to select and stalk his targets.

Another great book by Connelly
Revisado: 11-23-22
Been a fan for years and it’s nice to keep having new stuff. Keep it coming. This was an unlikely story. It has twists and turns and an authentic origin that is a warning to those who submit DNA to sites. I am a Bosch fan. The main character is not a Superman detective like Bosch or a super lawyer like his brother. I’m many ways he is a sad sack. But he is still attractive and by the end, you really have to like him. I can’t wait for the next. Also I loved the narration and sound effects.

How did Cromwell think?
Revisado: 12-08-20
History gives little insight into the thoughts of famous figures. All we have are those results.
Mantel’s novel is provocative i its interpretation of how these people contemplated their actions and how they judges themselves within the parameters of their religious and cultural world.
Particularly thought provoking - Cromwell’s rumination on his personal life and tragedies as he performs his service to King Henry VIII. These vignettes are consistently believable.
It humanizes historical figures. Unlike the work of Philippa Gregory, which is incredibly entertaining, Cromwell is portrayed as an astutely masculine figure. His thoughts are for the most part, merciless. He is driven by ambition in the form of allegiance to the king. Gregory’s characters are indelibly feminine and even a bit whimsical.
Cromwell is an amazing subject and it is done so well. Highly recommended!

Back when Harry Bosch was just a rookie homicide detective, he had an inspiring mentor who taught him to take the work personally and light the fire of relentlessness for every case. Now that mentor, John Jack Thompson, is dead, but after his funeral his widow hands Bosch a murder book that Thompson took with him when he left the LAPD 20 years before - the unsolved killing of a troubled young man in an alley used for drug deals.

One of the best
Revisado: 10-05-20
I like Bosch getting older and having a knee replacement. I’m reading it while I’m recovering from same. I love the relationship with Ballard getting more solid and the outsiders getting together and beating their adversaries. Loved the performance, too. Sadly, this is Bosch facing health issues, which is very real, and looking at financial security into the future for his daughter. Very real. But the best is the surprises and twists that make Connelly so great.

Revisado: 08-04-20
See has the ability to weave pieces of a story that are so diverse and complex into a compelling story that is rich and moving. It is a wonderful insight into an ancient ethnic culture and insight into the modern reality of adoption. It is a truly beautiful nook. I couldn’t put it down.

Spellbinding!
Revisado: 01-09-20
Iles is a writer with a conscience. It is on display in every one of his novels. This is particularly intense in this series, which examines the events of an era that changed the world as we who are old enough knew it. Who killed JFK? And for those of us who did not grow up in the South, what happened during the Civil Rights era? How did it effect events in the wake of Katrina? The characters are so intense and so real. The narration brings to life the multiple cultures and influences involved. The impassioned narrative is spellbinding. History comes to life. Highly recommended.

Raised in the historic southern splendor of Natchez, Mississippi, Penn Cage learned all he knows of honor and duty from his father, Dr. Tom Cage. But now the beloved family doctor has been accused of murdering Viola Turner, the African-American nurse with whom he worked in the dark days of the 1960s. Penn is determined to save his father, but Tom, stubbornly invoking doctor-patient privilege, refuses to even speak in his own defense.

Unbelievable
Revisado: 12-30-19
This was one of the most interesting and complex stories I have ever read and I read a LOT. It’s an amazing story that will keep the reader on edge through the entire book. Iles is one of the greatest historic novelists of our time.
If you are interested in the civil rights era and the South, you will love every minute. If you care about American history of the 20th Century, you will be unable
To put it down. If you crave adventure, you won’t be disappointed.
Read it. You’ll be glad. And you will be addicted to this author.

Surprise in the work
Revisado: 10-28-19
I don’t know why I did not expect something so finished and so deep and transcendent. I suppose it’s because I have a built in prejudice that an actor is not a writer. Maybe.
But this is not that.
It is a deeply moving and deeply revealing experience that is rewarding and painful- but also allows the reader to see the insights that have been revelatory to the author. They come from a person- not a celebrity- who lived through childhood trauma and grew to see it through an evolving state of awareness led by her experiences with roles.
Did her roles pick her just at the right time or - as picky as Field was in selecting her scripts- did she pick roles that were going to become the next big personal breakthrough because she recognized somewhere inside that she needed that dimension to unravel the next piece of her insight?
It is a beautifully written memoir that I believe, conveys many emotions of womanhood and professional maturity that many people will recognize in themselves.
Highly recommended

Inappropriate narrator- great story
Revisado: 10-16-19
This complex, high suspense drama is another great Vince Flynn novel. But the narrator is so wrong! He would be great for some British girlie novel or a Shakespeare play. Not this. His highly theatrical performance is the opposite of the serious minded Matt Raif character and his coterie. It’s distracting. Plus- the volume on the performance is uneven and requires multiple adjustments of the volume dial to hear.
The book, however, delivers all the twists and turns and suspense we expect from Flynn.

Seeing a female character from a man’s mind
Revisado: 10-05-19
Eisler really nailed it this time. I felt connected to the character of Livia throughout the book. It felt authentic and amazing. So many women struggle with men who overpower them in one way or another, treat us like we are objects and disregard our humanity, often without knowing the violence that it does to our psyches. It is refreshing to have a man get inside a woman’s head and to understand that women have the same feelings as anyone else. Being humiliated or demoralized just because of your gender is violence.
Besides that, the storyline was gripping and filled with twists and turns that were unpredictable.
I loved the characters from past novels coming back. They are like old friends.
I look forward to the next one.
Highly recommended for its engaging plot, well-developed characters and authenticity. A great read.
