Read the original
Revisado: 07-01-21
For some reason I expected this to be a more in-depth book than the original, but it’s no more informative. A critical read of the original is enough.

Historia
Smart, humorous, and strikingly original essays by one of “America’s most bracing thinkers on race, gender, and capitalism of our time.” (Rebecca Traister) In these eight piercing explorations on beauty, media, money, and more, Tressie McMillan Cottom - award-winning professor and acclaimed author of Lower Ed - embraces her venerated role as a purveyor of wit, wisdom, and Black Twitter snark about all that is right and much that is wrong with this thing we call society.

Historia
American-born 17-year-old Maya Aziz is torn between worlds. There's the proper one her parents expect for their good Indian daughter: attending a college close to their suburban Chicago home and being paired off with an older Muslim boy who's "suitable" to her mother. And then there is the world of her dreams: going to film school and living in New York City - and maybe, just maybe, pursuing a boy she's known from afar her entire life who's suddenly falling into her orbit at school.

Whiny and Didactic
Revisado: 02-19-20
I really really wanted to love this story, but ultimately it was fell flat. Whiny about love, and didactic about the Muslim-American experience. I felt the character kept on spelling out what it means to be Muslim and I wish the same ideas could've been brought across in other ways. Perhaps I would've enjoyed this more as a teenager but my god... her love interest was so boring.

Historia
All of London is abuzz with the scandalous case of Frannie Langton, accused of the double murder of her employers, renowned scientist George Benham and his eccentric French wife, Marguerite. Crowds pack the courtroom, eagerly following every twist, while the newspapers print lurid theories about the killings and the mysterious woman being tried at the Old Bailey. The testimonies against Frannie are damning. She is a seductress, a witch, a master manipulator, a whore. But Frannie claims she cannot recall what happened that fateful evening, even if remembering could save her life.

Amazing Story
Revisado: 02-10-20
LOVED how complex and delicate this story is. Frannie, Phibbah and Sal will stay with me for a long while. I fear white women like Miss-Bella and Meg *shudders* who play with a different kind of cruel than men like Mr. Benham and Langton.
Amazing story, I had to listen to the book at 1.5x the speed because it felt a little too slow but I really like when authors do their own narration.
