A fun read, but...
Revisado: 01-18-25
Excellent performance, but the story was just ok. I figured out the ending back in book 2, so it just felt like I was waiting to get there through all of 3. The story suffers by having characters with multiple names. I get why the author did that, but it makes the story unnecessarily complicated. Would I read it again? No. But it kept me company on a long drive. 😆

Historia
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Whatever the other 5 star reviews have said, I probably agree. Great story, excellent characters, intelligent dialogue. It's what you want in a fantasy story.

This is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

More of a fictional biography than a fantasy story
Revisado: 10-24-23
Like many have said, nothing really happens in this book. It's mostly a character meandering about his early childhood and some limited exposure to adventure a world of magic.
The narrator is excellent. There's potential for a great story here, but the author ends the book before we really get to it, which ultimately leaves the reader feeling like they wasted their time reading an extremely long prologue.
It was kinda interesting, but not enough to compel me to get the next book in the series.

There were good parts, but not enough.
Revisado: 08-11-23
I read the reviews that called it "woke" and thought, "well these were clearly written by basic simps who can't handle a non homogenized world". I mean, when pressed they can't even define what that word means. But even in their derpitude they do see a problem with Ready Player Two. The social commentary in this book feels forced and even performative, and Cline goes out of his way to keep doing it throughout the entire thing. I say this as an LGBT+ "community member", the execution doesn't work in this book. It distracts from the story and feels patronizing.
The story just also wasn't that good. The characters were pretty annoying at times (too many) and the Prince section almost made me give up. I stuck it out, just so I could say I did. It wasn't worth it though. Ready Player One was perfection. This book was a failed port (gamers will get that).
Will's narration is excellent as usual.

Almost gave up, glad I stuck with it.
Revisado: 03-05-23
I started this immediately after finishing Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn trilogy. So I was accustomed to the extremely detailed action scenes in his writings. The Perfect Run's action scenes can be pretty sparse in detail, distractingly sparse at times. The author also seems to be writing inside jokes that they clearly get, but are uninclined to share with us, the readers. By chapter 5, I was ready for a refund... but I stuck with it and I'm glad I did.
Despite what I see as flaws in the writing style, the author managed to tell an interesting story that makes you want to hypothesize the "what ifs", On top of that, the characters are unique and have a lot of personality - and a lot of room to grow in potentially fascinating ways. I found myself liking and sympathizing with the protagonist and his sidekicks (whoever they may be that loop).
Overall, the writing is pretty good, definitely not terrible, but is at times (a minority of the time) slightly lacking. That said, the story is interesting, and if you give it a chance I think you'll find it captivating,
So, I'm not returning The Perfect Run. Instead I'm buying book 2.

The galaxy is doomed. Monkeys may be clever and too stubborn to give up, but Skippy The Idiot Who Got Played knows the harsh truth: this is a fight he can’t win. The odds are not only stacked against him, he was designed not to win this fight. Maybe he can salvage some faint memory of the civilizations that inhabit the galaxy, but those beings are doomed. Doomed. Including the Merry Band of Pirates.

Lackluster end to a fun but way too long series
Revisado: 12-21-22
The first book was just brilliant. Skippy turned an otherwise run-of-the-mill story into pure magic. R.C. Bray made it real. I faithfully read all 15 books in this series, but nothing stacked up to book 1. While they were all entertaining, the whole series could have easily been just 3-5 books long and would have benefitied from less repetition. This final book had some great moments, but it felt rushed at the end and finished with a lot of loose ends and was less satisfying than I had hoped.
Meh... long live Skippy. Shmabey we'll get some supplemental stories later.

Not a bad book, just not my cup of tea.
Revisado: 10-18-22
The narrator's voice is excellent. I'm actually going to look for more work he's done because I just like his voice.
The story was okay, but things escalated to violence way too quickly. The main character's willingness to murder folks (who arguably deserved it) without being phased by it came across a bit sociopathic. It also kinda reads like Qanon-lite fanfiction. Not sure if that was the author's intention or their persuasion. Definitely not the worst book I've come across, but I likely won't get the sequels.
This Tennessee boy is sticking to SciFi and Fantasy.

Historia
Civil war looms in the Bobiverse in this brand-new, epic-length adventure by Audible number one best seller Dennis E. Taylor. More than a hundred years ago, Bender set out for the stars and was never heard from again. There has been no trace of him despite numerous searches by his clone-mates. Now Bob is determined to organize an expedition to learn Bender’s fate - whatever the cost. But nothing is ever simple in the Bobiverse. Bob’s descendants are out to the 24th generation now, and replicative drift has produced individuals who can barely be considered Bobs anymore.

About half way through I asked myself, "why are you still listening to this?" It was because I like the narrator's voice. I would have given up on this book if I were just reading it myself. The story is all over the place and not terribly interesting.
