Historia
At one time, Corrie ten Boom would have laughed at the idea that she had a story to tell. For the first 50 years of her life, nothing out of the ordinary ever happened to her. She was a spinster watchmaker living contentedly with her sister and their elderly father in the tiny house over their shop in Haarlem. Their uneventful days, as regulated as their own watches, revolved around their abiding love for one another. But with the Nazi invasion and occupation of Holland, everything changed....

Historia
Since she was nine years old, Alina Dziak knew she would marry her best friend, Tomasz. Now 15 and engaged, Alina is unconcerned by reports of Nazi soldiers at the Polish border, believing her neighbors that they pose no real threat, and dreams instead of the day Tomasz returns from college in Warsaw so they can be married. But little by little, injustice by brutal injustice, the Nazi occupation takes hold, and Alina’s tiny rural village, its families, are divided by fear and hate. Then, as the fabric of their lives is slowly picked apart, Tomasz disappears.

I hate books wherein ridiculous situations crop up and some character says, “I know this sounds hard to believe…”
It is!!!

Historia
As a panicked world goes into lockdown, Lucy Barton is uprooted from her life in Manhattan and bundled away to a small town in Maine by her ex-husband and on-again, off-again friend, William. For the next several months, it’s just Lucy, William, and their complex past together in a little house nestled against the moody, swirling sea. Rich with empathy and emotion, Lucy by the Sea vividly captures the fear and struggles that come with isolation, as well as the hope, peace, and possibilities that those long, quiet days can inspire.

Outstanding!

I love the world that Elizabeth Strout has created. I found this particular story near but not quite up to par. The narration, however, was so spot on that I readily overlooked any shred of weakness.

Historia
June 1940. France has fallen to the Nazis, and Britain may be next—but to many Americans, the war is something happening “over there.” Veronica Grace has just graduated from college; she and her mother, Violet, are looking for a fresh start in sunny Los Angeles. After a blunder cost her a prestigious career opportunity in New York, Veronica is relieved to take a typing job in L.A.—only to realize that she’s working for one of the area’s most vicious propagandists. Overnight, Veronica is exposed to the dark underbelly of her new home, where Nazis are recruiting Americans.

Disappointing on So Many Levels
Revisado: 09-22-22
As a fan of the Maggie Hope series, I could not wait to receive this book.
However, Macneal’s new characters are two-dimensional and often closer to caricatures than characters. Moreover, a better name for this novel would have been, “Nazis: They’re Just Like Us!” She attempts to humanize an entire creed of monsters, with her protagonist catching Nazi Fever at one point and beginning to validate the Nazis’ anti-Semitism. After all, Veronica once had an affair with a married man who happened to be Jewish, and didn’t his aggrieved wife ruined Veronica’s chances to practice journalism on the east coast? She should (?) hate the Jews and want them dead. Please…
Then there was a gratuitous Jewish grandmother thrown into the mix, stuffing her grandson with loathsome chopped liver sandwiches despite his protests.
By the way, how many times can you say Bubbeleh in a single sentence? Or, for that matter, how many times can you repeat the phrase “my North Star” in a single novel?
But that’s not all…
I was, at first, delighted to see that the book’s narrator did not drone on in a predictable cadence - as was the case with the Maggie Hope series. But this new narrator - while seemingly proficient when it came to pronouncing German words, failed utterly when it came to imitating aYiddish accent. The grandmother’s few insipid remarks were simply mangled English, with no rhyme or reason. Was this meant to be a mockery? Equally gratuitous and inconsistent were the main character’s occasionally lapses into a “New Jersey accent.” How did this enhance the plot in any way imaginable?!? Beats me.
In short, save your credits and your time for a really decent book.

Jackson Brodie, ex-cop, ex-private detective, new millionaire, is among the bystanders. The event thrusts Jackson into the orbit of the wife of an unscrupulous real estate tycoon, a washed-up comedian, a successful crime novelist, a mysterious Russian woman, and a female police detective. Historia
Corbin College, not quite upstate New York, winter 1959-1960: Ruben Blum, a Jewish historian—but not an historian of the Jews—is co-opted onto a hiring committee to review the application of an exiled Israeli scholar specializing in the Spanish Inquisition. When Benzion Netanyahu shows up for an interview, family unexpectedly in tow, Blum plays the reluctant host to guests who proceed to lay waste to his American complacencies. Mixing fiction with nonfiction, the campus novel with the lecture, The Netanyahus is a wildly inventive comedy of blending, identity, and politics.

Historia
Sixteen year-old Katya Spivak is out for a walk on the gracious streets of Bayhead Harbor with her two summer babysitting charges when she's approached by silver-haired, elegant Marcus Kidder. At first, his interest in her seems harmless, even pleasant, like his name - a sort of gentle joke. His beautiful home, the children's books that he's written, his classical music, the marvelous art in his study, his lavish presents to her. But by degrees, almost imperceptibly, something changes.

The plot was engaging, the main character carefully nuanced, and the overall experience was very gratifying. I had to suspend my disbelief quite a bit, but if I wanted total verisimilitude I’d read nonfiction.
