Historia
Lucy used to handle her adult romantic life according to the script she’d been handed. She met a guy just like herself: same age, same background, same hopes and dreams; they got married and started a family. Too bad he made her miserable. Now, two decades later, she’s a nearly divorced, forty-one-year-old schoolteacher with two school-aged sons, and there is no script anymore. So when she meets Joseph, she isn’t exactly looking for love—she’s more in the market for a babysitter.

Love Nick Hornby
Revisado: 02-02-21
... but I'm not as much of a fan of this book in particular. His books, About a Boy, How to be Good, and High Fidelity, are among my all-time favorite books. This one was only good. I just wasn't as engaged in the story as I was his previous books. I did enjoy the narration by Ben Bailey Smith and Hattie Ladbury.

Historia
It was supposed to be impossible. George R.R. Martin was a frustrated television writer who created his best-selling A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy novels to be an unfilmable saga bound only by the limits of his vast imagination. Then a pair of first-time TV writers teamed with HBO to try and adapt Martin's epic. We've all seen the eight seasons of the Emmy-winning fantasy series that came next. But there is one Game of Thrones tale that has yet to be told: the 13-year behind-the-scenes struggle to pull off this extraordinary phenomenon.

Great behind the scenes look
Revisado: 11-07-20
If you are a fan of the show, and of course you are because why else would you be considering buying this book, you will love this. A tiny bit of it is stuff you may have seen elsewhere like the documentary HBO did on the show, but most was brand new to me. I love anything that goes behind the scenes of stuff, but especially this show. The amount of effort that went into every episode far surpasses anything ever done on TV before. I couldn't get enough.
A word about the narration. The decision was made that rather than trying to give each of the dozens or hundreds of people interviewed a distinct voice, the same monotone was used throughout. I understand why that choice was made, but I just think the narrator could have put more life into voices. That's fine to use the same voice for each, it just would have been nice if the voice he used were a little more engaging.

Historia
David and Ellie didn’t realize how much they have missed their friends, two other couples who had moved out of their modest neighborhood in a desert city for the comforts of the suburbs, until the day of Donald Trump’s election. Separated also from their daughter who lived hours away in California, they were in a funk. But, when Ellie discovers a repellent offering floating in the small Jacuzzi in their backyard, David is blindsided. Little does he know this is but the first in a chain of grisly events that would play out in their lives with devastating consequences.

Richard Russo lite
Revisado: 10-06-20
I love Richard Russo. I've read all of his books and loved almost all of them (except Bridge of Sighs). He is such a keen observer of human nature and his characters are always vivid and entertaining. This novella is no exception, but given it's short length, it's hard to get invested in it in the same way you do his other books.
A word about the narrator, Mark Bramhall. I became aware of him when he did Russo's Everbody's Fool. He is a master at bringing unique characters to life. His interpretations bring nuances to the characters that you wouldn't get if it were another narrator and you certainly wouldn't get reading it on your own. He has become one of my top 2 or 3 narrators. I'd listen to him read anything.

Historia
Was the Confederacy doomed from the start in its struggle against the superior might of the Union? Did its forces fight heroically against all odds for the cause of states’ rights? In reality, these suggestions are an elaborate and intentional effort on the part of Southerners to rationalize the secession and the war itself. Unfortunately, skillful propagandists have been so successful in promoting this romanticized view that the Lost Cause has assumed a life of its own.

Putting down "The Great Pro-Slavery Rebellion"
- De Buretto en 07-30-18
A story that needs to be told
Revisado: 08-27-20
It is amazing that so many Americans still cling to such insane beliefs about the causes of the Civil War. These beliefs serve to reinforce the notion that those fighting did so for honorable reasons and that they should be praised and remembered because of their valor. Once you realize that this couldn't be further from the truth... they may have fought with valor but that they weren't fighting for noble reasons, like to preserve some glorified notion of the southern way of life... that they were indeed fighting to preserve slavery... that makes it harder to justify keeping up the statues of their generals and so forth.
The essays contained in this book are fascinating and provide an important reminder about what they war was all about.
The narrator keeps a serious tone and is engaged throughout and has a conversational tone that is easy to listen to.

Good but not great
Revisado: 08-27-20
There is much to like in this book about a girl trying to find the truth behind her father's alleged crime. Zoe is a plucky protagonist who seems real and the narrator does a wonde6job voicing her. There wasn't quite enough going on to keep me engaged the entire book, but it does have some wonderful moments.

Good book - great narration
Revisado: 05-07-20
It took me a while to get into the plot, but once it gets going, it's pretty good. What really kept me going though was the narration by Trini Alvarado. She has a beautiful voice and it is just right for this story and these characters.
