Unbearable narrator, DNF
Revisado: 05-18-24
I wanted to return to this series after having read it many years ago. But, the narrator makes it impossible. Her narration is like having tinnitus; can't figure out a way to listen without being distracted. It took a bit of time to figure out the problem. She pronounces EVERY SINGLE CONSONANT and every single syllable. Every d, and t, and n, which is especially apparent at the end of words. Ex: the word started will be pronounced start...ed. and it just goes on and on
I know this is an older recording, but I looked, and she has narrated many books. I can't be bothered to check whether this verbal tic is still present. Of course, these 3 volumes were "free", and they are not on kindle unlimited, so not "free" on Amazon. Regardless, the narration is impossible to overlook, and I cannot appreciate this early Martha Wells. So, DNF

I thought, it's 63 hours, how bad can it be? Could not even finish the first "mystery". It's just too twee for me.

Disliked narrator DNF

Just could not listen to this narrator. Maybe I have been spoiled by excellent narrators, but this narration was robotic, stiff, and uninspired. May try to READ the novel, but listening just made me grind my teeth.

It all seems linked to the death of Adam’s father many years ago - a man who may have somehow survived as a warlock. Gosh, the world isn't just black and white!
Revisado: 03-11-22
I am forced to agree with another reviewer. This series is squarely and badly YA. We continue with the themes of self-acceptance, understanding that good people make difficult decisions under difficult circumstances, that child abuse is bad, love is good and might sometimes be hard. I felt that the author started with the themes he wanted to develop, and wrote a story around it. Had I paid for it, I would have returned it. And it ended with a cliff-hanger...

Historia
The outcry when Conan Doyle pushed Sherlock Holmes over the Reichenbach Falls and the dismay when Freeling shot Van der Valk are as nothing compared to the chaos that ensues when Lorinda Lucas tries to dispose of Miss Petunia and her siblings, Lily and Marigold. Not only does the lid blow off the fictional village of St. Waldemar Boniface, but the literary colony of Brimful Coffers is shaken to its foundations.

Dull Cozy
Revisado: 05-28-21
The initial premise sounded light and fun. Alas, it was not to be. The characters were flat, the crimes uninspired, and I guessed the plot rather quickly. The colony of authors deserved to die if the samples of books and plots which are included in the book had ever been written.

Historia
Six crew members went out on the Parada, Earth’s first starship. All contact was lost, and the ship vanished for almost two centuries. When the Parada’s successor found the drifting ship and somehow managed to bring it home, the six crew members were not only still alive but barely older, due to the time dilation effects of near-FTL travel. Their return was a miracle - but it could not be revealed to the waiting world. The problem was, six individuals went out to the stars. More than seventy fractured personalities came back.

Historia
Roland Tankowicz wasn't even legally a person anymore. The aging cyborg had never really recovered from being betrayed and enslaved by his superiors in the Army, and the final insult of being permanently classified as "defunct military ordnance" had been a bitter pill to swallow. Now, he spent most of his time drinking beer and working as a fixer for the crime families in 25th-century Boston. It was easy money if you were the kind of guy who was bullet-proof and could pick up a house.

Don't bother
Revisado: 09-14-19
The premise could have been terrific...How do augmented humans deal with their capabilities, their lives as soldiers, their lives after the military..Especially as the medical world is working on augmentation for people who are paralyzed. It is going to happen.
I am not sure who wrote those great reviews, but, no. This is just a soldier boy meets girl, they save her dad. And, even though the woman is also augmented, she uses cute kittenish tricks to wow her man. Augh!
This is about highly augmented military cyborgs, and they fight...Boxing, martial arts, punching, wrestling...WHAT! I mean, really, this is how the augmented soldier fights? He has been on many worlds doing, uh, fighting. Is he punching everyone to death?
And, do we need to know she opined? " She said," is fine, really. Just an example of the abuse of the thesaurus. And, of course, too many adjectives for an "action" story.
I read lots of military Sci Fi, (yes, I am female, so what) and this is just, BAD.
But the reader was excellent, I felt sorry for him.

Lovely, pleasing book. Well written, with a hint of Victorian language, and sly humor. Engaging characters rescue a fairly simple plot from being pedestrian. Recommended.

A good psychological mystery. A study of what lies below the surface when people are stressed beyond tolerance. Will buy the next one when it is released. Enjoyed the reader. No sex and no gratuitous violence.

Nate Temple's all-consuming quest to avenge his parents is temporarily put on hold when shape-shifting dragons invade St. Louis. Sophomoric effort that desperately needs an editor. The reader is worse: pronunciation errors, poor choices for voices. Maybe if I read it it would be tolerable, but listening was just too painful. Cannot finish.
