Historia
In the aftermath of a rebellion against William the Conqueror, northern England lies in ruins, its people scattered and starved. Aelfric, a 14-year-old thrall, flees from his master and stumbles upon a cache of stolen laundry. The thief? Aliwyn, a girl around his age, ostracized for being “cursed.” In her care is a lost toddler she has rescued from the clutches of greedy thrall traders.

A Wonderful Adventure
Revisado: 03-28-25
This is a terrific alt-historical adventure novel that should be totally accessible to young readers, and a delight to readers of all ages. Michael Hajiantonis’s narration was particularly absorbing! (I intend to buy more of his work.)
Young Aelfric is a gifted piper and escaped thrall. Aliwyn is a sick girl with the toddler son of an English lord in her keeping who has taken to stealing to survive. These two orphans fall in together, and try to find their way to safety in 1000s England in the aftermath of the harrowing (a time of unrest).
Aelfric's past is pursing him all the time, while at the same time Aliwyn's mysterious illness only seems to get worse. Is it really a curse on her caused by loneliness, and is there anything Aelfric can do to stop it?
Full of wonderful historical detail, as well as some inventions, it was the characters that stood out most starkly to me in this narrative. Their motivations were always crystal clear and their psychology was well explored. I was following their twin journey every step of the way, ever wondering how they would get themselves out of the next mess they found themselves in.
The dangers and escapes of the novel are dramatic and thrilling, but they always rang as true to me. There is a narrative reserve and a realism about the action that grounded the story beautifully and never leaves the humanity of its characters behind.
For me, the journey of our protagonists' friendship lives at the heart of the story. Their deepening relationship, which they themselves hardly understand, grows into a trusting friendship through one hardship after another. The choices they make drive them apart, and at the same time somehow conspire to drive them closer together.
This is a story of goodness and the human spirit. It was wholesome, but not without its strife and grief. Candidly, it could not have come to me at a better time. It was a companion to me on many restless nights sitting up with a sick dog, my beloved friend. This story was a balm to my own grief and anxiety.
I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone and anyone. There is so much here that is compelling to read: themes of friendship, prejudice, different faiths, anger, morality, and much more. Most of all this is a human story, and one I want to continue.

Historia
The Moonstone, a priceless yellow diamond, is looted from an Indian temple and maliciously bequeathed to Rachel Verinder. On her 18th birthday, her friend and suitor Franklin Blake brings the gift to her. That very night, it is stolen again. No one is above suspicion, as the idiosyncratic Sergeant Cuff and the Franklin piece together a puzzling series of events as mystifying as an opium dream and as deceptive as the nearby Shivering Sand.

This was a wonderful listen! My interest never flagged for a second. Each narrator and each pov was as entertaining as the last, embellishing and advancing the story with a steady pace. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a British mystery!

Serkis does a wonderful job of bringing this monumental fantasy classic to dramatic life in this new reading. I feel I want to go all the way back to The Fellowship of the Ring and start it all over again, but then I always feel that way when I finish these books. I highly recommend this edition.

Great fun!
Revisado: 11-02-22
This was a wonderfully fun and inventive adaptation of the beloved classic, to which it was surprisingly faithful! The hobbits do a great job of infusing their performances with mirth and camaraderie throughout their dark and frightful adventures. I loved hearing Ian Holm as Frodo and Bilbo. As a fan of the Jackson adaptation, it was a treat to find him in the lead role. I can’t wait to continue the adventure.

Historia
At the opening of his third novel in an ongoing adventure series by Patrick O'Brian, Jack Aubrey is cruising off Cape Sicie when his friend Stephen Maturin (more serenely situated in Sussex) is informed of the Board's decision regarding Aubrey's prize money, taken after victorious engagement with a Spanish squadron at Cape Santa Maria. The money, five million pieces of eight, is not, as is the custom of war, to be divided among the crews of the four victorious vessels.

Revisado: 12-04-21
Elliot is perfect here. He is natural, dramatic, and every character stands out as unique, transporting the listener to the Scottish highlands and beyond. His performance of Kidnapped has made it one of my favorite novels. I could listen to him read it again and again. I only wish he had read the sequel Catriona, but alas!

Historia
Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

Wonderful - wonderful
Revisado: 12-04-21
Serkis breathes life into the grand adventures, dangers and escapes of Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit! His reading is going to be the definitive performance for me. The story was as wonderful to me now as it was when I first read it at all of fourteen, but Serkis’s dramatic rendition of the fight against the dragon and the climactic battle of five armies made the events more absorbing than my own reading had. His performance often elevates the story in delightful ways. I can’t recommend this episodic adventure enough, especially to new readers!
