Historia
Shari Franke’s childhood was a constant battle for survival. Her mother, Ruby Franke, enforced a severe moral code while maintaining a façade of a picture-perfect family for their wildly popular YouTube channel 8 Passengers, which documented the day-to-day life of raising six children for a staggering 2.5 million subscribers. But a darker truth lurked beneath the surface—Ruby’s wholesome online persona masked a more tyrannical parenting style than anyone could have imagined.

Riveting and heartbreaking
Revisado: 03-21-25
Shari's story filled in the gaps that were naturally absent from the true crime news reports of Russell's brave escape in 2023 and Ruby's subsequent arrest and imprisonment. It's evident that she is well read and is a seasoned writer from her years of journaling, so her descriptions are vivid and stirred my emotions to the point I had to slow down my pace to stay grounded in my own reality. The only part of the story that seemed surreal was her relationship with Derek and the fact she didn't seek help sooner to escape his obsession with her. My belief is her indoctrination with the LDS church limited her to those resources and the fear she would be castigated by the church authorities turned out to be true for the most part, although she managed to finally break away from the affair and create a familial relationship with her aunts and others who genuinely cared for her. I hope the parole board keeps Ruby and Jodi confined for decades and the other children receive the support they need to recover from years of abuse.

Historia
In April of 1846, 21-year-old Sarah Graves, intent on a better future, set out west from Illinois with her new husband, her parents, and eight siblings. Seven months later, after joining a party of pioneers led by George Donner, they reached the Sierra Nevada Mountains as the first heavy snows of the season closed the pass ahead of them. In early December, starving and desperate, Sarah and 14 others set out for California on snowshoes and over the next 32 days endured almost unfathomable hardships and horrors.

Riveting descriptions of a tragic story
Revisado: 06-26-24
The development of the characters is people who were not very different from myself in many ways made them relatable. Since I did not grow up near mountains, it was hard to visualize the terrain involved. Perhaps it would have been easier had I've been reading the book myself, but I don't have time to read long books, and I did not want to miss this one after I learned about it. It was a well told story from beginning to end, and included so much parallel history, both in the United States and Europe, that as a reader, I was able to place this in the context of other events that were happening around it.

Historia
Sir Jackie Stewart is a man of immense charisma and integrity and is one of the most highly regarded names in global sport: winner of three F1 World Championships, 27 Grands Prix, and ranked in the top five drivers of all time. On retiring from the circuit, he went on to build an equally impressive international business career. In the 1960s and into the 70s, with his black cap, sideburns, and aviator shades, Jackie Stewart was an unmistakable icon in a glorious era of style, glamour, and speed.

Winning is not enough
Revisado: 01-30-13
What did you like best about Winning Is Not Enough? What did you like least?
I was so excited to get this audio book. I was so looking forward to hearing Jackie read his book. I was equally disappointed that this was the abridged version. I have the book so I guess I'll have to solder on to fill in all of the details. I asked for a return when I found out it was the shortened version.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Winning Is Not Enough?
Hearing in Jackie's own words what is was like for him to race.
What about Jackie Stewart’s performance did you like?
He is very relaxed. Very natural in the way he speaks.
Do you think Winning Is Not Enough needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Only if it's read completely through.
Any additional comments?
Very good idea.
