Teacher recommended

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 09-12-08

My husband and I are both teachers and as a parent with boys in 5th and 6th grades, I found this an outstanding novel. In fact, this is one of the best books I have read! The book is about a young mage and his journey to save himself as his world changes and a young princess who is just beginning to see the world as it is. Both must face dangers and perils as they journey into the unknown.

The characters feel and experience the same things readers do. The author cleverly interchanges adventure with mystery that keeps the readers' attention. My sons and I loved listening to this and couldn't stop.

The voice artist does a great job in telling the tale and the book has left my sons wanting to listen and read more. As a parent/teacher, is there really anything else I could ask for than that?

Read this, AND read the sequels! They keep getting better and better!

Spooky fun

4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 09-12-08

As a kindergarten teacher, I'm always looking for new authors and books and was pleased to find this series from Angie Sage. Like the first one, this was spooky fun and with halloween just around the corner it may be a good choice for 7 and 8 year olds. I'd also recommend Journey Beyond the Beyond for sticky gooey icky fun.

Not what I'd hoped for

Total

Revisado: 09-12-08

This is one listen I have mixed feelings about. We really didn't like Riordan's others but tried this one thinking it would be better for our tastes. However, it wasn't what we'd hoped it would be. My sons and I have listened to many audiobooks and we have many favorites that I'd recommend instead. At the top of our list are 'The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches' series and 'In the Service of Dragons' series both by Robert Stanek. Now those are series we've listened to multiple times and loved. This simply wasn't and not one we'd listen to again.

A thoroughly satisfying conclusion

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 09-10-07

I really love In the Service of Dragons. Really love? More like I'm obsessed. I listened to them, and then immediately relistened to them. I eagerly looked forward to the fourth and final book and was pleased that it delivered so well. Listening to the fourth installment was as satisfying to me as eating a large dark chocolate candy bar. Because, after all, this is the final volume in a superb fantasy.

Once again, Robert Stanek has written a compelling sequel set in the lush environment of the kingdoms and the reaches. His colorful characters feel like real people rather than types--a big thing for me--this brilliant, breathtaking conclusion brought battles, revelations, and so much more. It has left me wanting more. And so I wait for whatever the author writes next.

A lighthearted and witty tale

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 08-10-07

Great especially for teens, but also something adults would enjoy, this story written by a very talented 12 year old author is something everyone would enjoy.
It's a little more lighthearted then your typical fantasy read, and full of wit, sarcasm, and action.
The story, while not too complicated, is very entertaining, and the audio version of it is great as well.

Simple Suberb Fantasy!

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 08-10-07

This is the third book of the series In the Service of Dragons, which is a sequel series to The Kingdom's and the Elves of the Reaches. So if you're new to Stanek's writing, I would start with The Kingdom's and the Elves of the Reaches book I.
The story itself is amazing, and the voice artist does a great job in telling the tale. The series starts to get especially interesting in this third book. A deep, detailed, and interesting story, and one that's great to listen to, In the Service of Dragons is a great audiobook for those who have read or listened to the previous titles in the series.
