Historia
Tending to the soldiers in the trenches of France during the First World War, battlefield nurse Bess Crawford can't help but notice the photo of a young pilot's wife every time she tends to him. But then at the railway station, in a mob of troops leaving for the front, Bess glimpses a familiar face - the pilot's wife, with another man. Later, back in France, Bess sees a newspaper with a drawing of the woman's face on the front page. She'd been murdered - the very day Bess saw her.

Boring
Revisado: 06-12-24
Narration is over the top pompous. All the man sound identical. The women are predictable.

More family drama than mystery
Revisado: 04-01-24
This is definitely not this author's usual sharp detective story. Far too much emotional hand wringing and no mystery.

Historia
After moving from a small country town to Seattle, Heather Baxter marries Tom, a widowed doctor with a young son and teenage daughter. A working vacation overseas seems like the perfect way to bring the new family together, but once they’re deep in the Australian outback, the jet-lagged and exhausted kids are so over their new mom. When they discover remote Dutch Island, off-limits to outside visitors, the family talks their way onto the ferry. But as soon as they set foot on the island, which is run by a tightly knit clan of locals, everything feels wrong.

So very disappointing!
Revisado: 05-22-22
I am a fan of Adrian McKinty's writing. This book was so unbearable, I couldn't believe he wrote it. The narrator's weak and whiney voice only made it all the more painful.

Good book Cringe worthy narrator
Revisado: 12-13-21
Why have the narrator introduce herself at the beginning of the novel? It just distracts from the novel and inserts her ostentatious personality. She over emotes at every opportunity. Hearing her act like a child is just creepy not to mention her swallowing saliva. Ick.

I hope the narrator has a day job.
Revisado: 05-24-19
I think Alastair Burke is a fine writer. The narrator's accents are ridiculous and distracting. The Brooklyn detective with some sort of Georgia drawl?
What? Because he's black? She sounds like she's reading to a kindergarten class. if you can get past the cringe-worthy narrator, the story is ok.

Revisado: 03-30-17
Would you try another book from Cristina Garcia and/or Maggie Bofill?
The narrator's is just a bit too grating. Especially when she's talking as the teenager. Just couldn't listen to it.
