Historia
In the history of modern sport, there have never been two high-level teammates who loathed each other the way Shaquille O’Neal loathed Kobe Bryant and Kobe Bryant loathed Shaquille O’Neal. From public sniping and sparring, to physical altercations and the repeated threats of trade, it was warfare. And yet, despite eight years of infighting and hostility, by turns mediated and encouraged by coach Phil Jackson, the Shaq-Kobe duo resulted in one of the greatest dynasties in NBA history.

too much authorial voice
Revisado: 10-29-22
winning time was more down the middle with stories and some editorializing . I understand why Jeff Pearlman wrote that sniveling forward in the wake of kobe's death. He might have done a little better to let the story speak for themselves. That said it was good and very fascinating piece of history.

Historia
Over two grim nights in Los Angeles, the young followers of Charles Manson murdered seven people, including the actress Sharon Tate, then eight months pregnant. With no mercy and seemingly no motive, the Manson Family followed their leader's every order. Twenty years ago, when journalist Tom O'Neill was reporting a magazine piece about the murders, he worried there was nothing new to say. Then he unearthed shocking evidence of a cover-up behind the "official" story, including police carelessness, legal misconduct, and potential surveillance by intelligence agents.

This book was more about this guy's thoughts and feelings than anything to do with the mansion case and it was a little distractive.

If you're only gonna read one Charles Porter's book read true grit. I did think this one was funnier than a Confederacy of dunces. There are a lot of racial slurs so be on the lookout for that

A groundbreaking work of science fiction, The Left Hand of Darkness tells the story of a lone human emissary to Winter, an alien world whose inhabitants can change their gender. His goal is to facilitate Winter's inclusion in a growing intergalactic civilization. But to do so he must bridge the gulf between his own views and those of the completely dissimilar culture that he encounters. Embracing the aspects of psychology, society, and human emotion on an alien world, The Left Hand of Darkness stands as a landmark achievement.

Captivating but maybe a little too long
Revisado: 09-24-18
I was very interested in seeing how the two protagonists deal with the various trials throughout this book. It offered an avenue to understanding this world of Ice and no war. I also enjoyed how the unique sexual identity of these people were just out there and not explored in depth until it became appropriate for the plot and the growth of the main characters. I also thought it dragged a little bit during the prison and ice journey chapters. However, overall the book was very moving and thought provoking.

Historia
"Life changes fast....You sit down to dinner and life as you know it ends." These were among the first words Joan Didion wrote in January 2004. Her daughter was lying unconscious in an intensive care unit, a victim of pneumonia and septic shock. Her husband, John Gregory Dunne, was dead. The night before New Year's Eve, while they were sitting down to dinner, he suffered a massive and fatal coronary. The two had lived and worked side by side for nearly 40 years.

good book for a fresh death
Revisado: 08-01-18
she does a good job of sharing the immediate experience, and how that changed for her over the course of a year. the way places and sensory input sparks emotion and memory is vivid. I especially like how Joan paints herself as some what removed and reserved because when the grief begins to impact her it's pretty good.

kind of a drag with a great payoff
Revisado: 06-28-18
The experience can get a little tedious in the middle, all of these competing voices and made up historical records. I wanted to quit a few times. I ended up powering through on 1.60 speed but the end reveal and payoff is really good and worth it.

In True Grit, we have a true American classic, as young Mattie, as vital as she is innocent, outdickers and outmaneuvers the hard-bitten men of the trail in a legend that will last through the ages.

loved it
Revisado: 01-02-18
the author does a really good job of telling the story from a large number of well developed and specific characters. I've always been a fan of his use of hard-boiled Hardscrabble language and he deploys it here to really great effect. the twists and turns are strong you get clenched up in a few places you really don't know what's going to happen and it's exciting. it more stops than ends and while that can be seen as a bit of a drawback I kind of want a sequel
