Historia
Toward the end of the Vietnam era, in a snug little Rhode Island seacoast town, wonderful powers have descended upon Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie, bewitching divorcées with sudden access to all that is female, fecund, and mysterious. Alexandra, a sculptor, summons thunderstorms; Jane, a cellist, floats on the air; and Sukie, the local gossip columnist, turns milk into cream. Their happy little coven takes on new, malignant life when a dark and moneyed stranger, Darryl Van Horne, refurbishes the long-derelict Lenox mansion and invites them in to play.

Has Always Been a Favorite
Revisado: 05-15-21
There’s a little spoiler ahead: This has always been one of my favorite books. I really enjoy Updike’s prose and Kate Reading’s reading is wonderful. I must agree though with another commenter above—some of the segments seem to be out of order. The witches speak of Jenny’s death prior to a segment where Jenny is very much still alive. It had been so long since I read the actual book I thought perhaps at first it was like a flashback. But I don’t think that’s the case. I think it’s out of order. That’s the reason I gave the story a four star. Otherwise it would have been all fives.

Historia
Salem, Massachusetts, is the site of the infamous witch trials and the new home of Samantha Mather. Recently transplanted from New York City, Sam and her stepmother are not exactly welcomed with open arms. Sam is the descendant of Cotton Mather, one of the men responsible for those trials - and almost immediately, she becomes the enemy of a group of girls who call themselves the Descendants. And guess who their ancestors were? If dealing with that weren’t enough, Sam also comes face to face with a real, live (well, technically dead) ghost.

A Fun Ride!
Revisado: 05-04-17
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who likes the suspense of an original fiction story woven in with history.
What did you like best about this story?
I've always been a fan of this part of history (the Salem Trials) and Adriana Mather's perspective of weaving in bullying with witch persecution was very inventive.
What does Adriana Mather bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
It was fun having the story read to me by someone who was a descendant of one of the players in the Salem Witch trials.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I could have very easily listened to it in one sitting more than likely, but I had other time commitments which made that impossible. But if I had been on vacation I may have been able to do it.

Loved the Entire Series...but...
Revisado: 09-02-15
I loved the entire series but was really shocked that at the end of "Daughter of Avalon" the Fairy Queen reveals the outcomes of Viviane's efforts in "Mists of Avalon."
I had read "Mists" many years ago, so I already knew the story.
However, if someone was reading the entire series from start to finish, never having read "Mists"--I would think this would be a major bummer to find this out.

The Forest House was excellent. One can see within this story the culmination of that which will be the Mists of Avalon.

Excellent Story!
Revisado: 07-10-15
I very much enjoyed the story. It has made me want to research the actual historical figure of Boudica. I found the narrator's voice to be a bit grating at times although the performance was good.
