so... boring

i gave up on this one. it was dry, slow, and IMO not well written. lots of repeated words and phrases, instantly predictable dialogue, overexplianing on some things and not explaining at all on some critical plot points. the main character was utterly unrelateable. 4 chapters in i finally stopped and found a different audio book to listen to.

the characters don't make sense. the plot doesn't make sense. the world doesn't make sense. at no time during this could i relate to absolutely anything anyone was doing. couldn't make it past chapter 2. getting my credit back for this one.

I couldn't get through chapter 10. I don't mind a plot device for a man to have sex with lots of women; that can be a lot of fun, but this just disgusted me and made me very angry. had to stop.

Why make a world like this?

It's well written, but every character is a complete ahole. I was kinda hoping by the end that everyone including the protagonist would die a painful death... but no, this is apparently a series. Even if the bad guys die at the end, it doesn't give you any sense of catharsis, because the world is still crap and everyone alive is still an ahole. They are either a viscious prick with an over-the-top cruelty streak, or an emotionally dead machine that wants to manipulate everyone, or they are unrealistically stupid in such a way that nature should be taking active steps to remove you from the gene pool. The characters are just not believable, difficult for you to empathize with, and ultimately not worth investing in. I started the second book hoping that things got better... but no. Dropping this series, and I can't recommend anyone waste their time on it.

My literary "comfort food"

excellent story, superior narration

I had forgotten how well written this story was. The narrator was excellent too, though I have to say I didn't like his voicing of Belgarath. In the books, there's a natural conflict between the usually irreverent and never-grew-up style he portrays with the respect, power, and authority he almost casually wields. The narrator has depicted him as a deep and wizened man of gravity... it just doesn't fit well.
