Historia
Brooke Siem was among the first generation of minors to be prescribed antidepressants. Initially diagnosed and treated in the wake of her father’s sudden death, this psychiatric intervention sent a message that something was pathologically wrong with her and that the only “fix” was medication. As a teenager, she stepped into the hazy world of antidepressants just at the time when she was forming the foundation of her identity. For the following fifteen years, every situation she faced was seen through the lens of brokenness.

I liked this book…
Revisado: 05-07-23
…but the narrator was absolutely awful. Once I got to ‘Martin’ I wasn’t sure if I could go on, but I did to get to the ending. I’m not quite sure how this made it through QC with that terrible accent. Actually all the terrible accents. They aren’t necessary! Whether it was a man or someone Malaysian or a Russian or a Brit they all were unnecessary and often, blatantly offensive. I think I would have liked this book much more if either I’d read it or someone else had narrated it.

Historia
When a trusted physician tells Renée Schuls-Jacobson that he has the solution for her chronic insomnia - a “tried and true medication without any side effects", she believes him. For seven years, she takes her clonazepam exactly as prescribed until, one day, she learns that her doctor is wrong: Long-term benzodiazepine use causes all kinds of problems including profound changes in brain function. While healing from an iatrogenic brain injury that is not widely recognized by doctors, Renée leaves everything familiar behind and goes on a journey.

Fantastic book!
Revisado: 12-30-22
This book is about a topic hardly ever discussed that few doctors know about, and most people can’t conceive of. It’s told with honesty, bravery, a hint of mysticism and (surprisingly) gratitude even after going through something so hellish. Renee is pure warmth and intelligence. She knows how to tell this story in a way that makes it more palatable for those who are yet to embark on her journey but know they have to. This book gave me hope. Thank you Renee!
