Historia
ADHD may be the defining diagnosis of our time. According to the latest data, more than 10 percent of American children (that’s 7.1 million kids) have been diagnosed with ADHD. And the number of stimulant prescriptions for adults in their 30s has shot up nearly threefold since 2012. In recent years, this explosion in demand has combined with other factors to create a widespread stimulant shortage in the US. In the second installment of Backfired, cohosts Leon Neyfakh and Arielle Pardes look at the unintended consequences of the ADHD industry, and trace the surprising path that brought us here.

Historia
Sixty-eight percent of Americans have dieted at some point in their lives. But upwards of 90 percent of people who intentionally lose weight gain it back within five years. And as many as 66 percent of people who embark on weight-loss efforts end up gaining more weight than they lost. If dieting is so clearly ineffective, why are we so obsessed with it? The culprit is diet culture, a system of beliefs that equates thinness to health and moral virtue, promotes weight loss as a means of attaining higher status, and demonizes certain ways of eating while elevating others.

Encouraging and well researched

I have been interested in this topic for years. Some excellent information is presented with irreverence, language, and flippant attitudes (which I agree with, but which wouldn’t convince my elderly mother). This presents its facts in a neutral but powerfully fact-backed way. Highly recommend.

Money - investing, personal finance, and business decisions - is typically taught as a math-based field, where data and formulas tell us exactly what to do. But in the real world people don’t make financial decisions on a spreadsheet. They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together. In The Psychology of Money, award-winning author Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories exploring the strange ways people think about money.

Historia
Glucose, or blood sugar, is a tiny molecule in our body that has a huge impact on our health. It enters our bloodstream through the starchy or sweet foods we eat. Ninety percent of us suffer from too much glucose in our system—and most of us don’t know it. The symptoms? Cravings, fatigue, infertility, hormonal issues, acne, wrinkles. Drawing on cutting-edge science and her own pioneering research, biochemist Jessie Inchauspé offers ten simple, surprising hacks to help you balance your glucose levels and reverse your symptoms—without going on a diet or giving up the foods you love.

I have never put all these things together in such a clear way. I have known previously that fat and protein and fiber were essential. Adding the glucose information is helpful.
I still am not understanding how the value of vinegar has science behind it. I didn’t catch that. It won’t matter for me, because I’m allergic to fermented and aged foods anyway.

Jessica is so relatable. In a world full of fake, she is the real thing.
Revisado: 01-24-24
I was diagnosed in my 60s. Jessica was a big part of me understanding that it was actually the right diagnosis for me. The struggle she has are very much the struggles I have had. And her joy in the creativity, which comes with a Neuro spicy brain is my joy as well.
I wouldn’t trade my brain for another one, but especially the part about time blindness cuts through my heart. It’s so real and I have lost the most in life because of that one attribute. It’s real. I just can’t seem to figure out time.
Despite all this, the joy of turning 40 (I am 65 now) allowed me to start just being myself, and not pretending anything different. Now I have friends who know who I am, and like my real self.
Trying to pretend I was something else was so stressful and it was impossible. I spent a decade trying to be sophisticated. Once I gave that up and decided to be real, I found an amazing husband and a wonderful marriage, and a bunch of great friends who really value the real me.
I recommend Jessica‘s work to everyone who asked me about ADHD and how I figured myself out.
PS one day about a week after I discovered the How to ADHD channel, my husband discovered it separately. He’s not ADHD, and he adores me the way I am, but he sees my struggles as well. Over the years, I have figured out certain systems that work for me so that I can find things and function, especially in my kitchen and with laundry. My beloved said “Did she get her hints from you?” So yes, this woman knows her stuff. She learned it a lot sooner than I did, but she also had a diagnosis when she was younger.

Many of us are aware of the ethical minefield that is fast fashion: the dodgy labor practices, the lax environmental standards, and the mountains of waste piling up on the shores of developing countries. But have you stopped to consider the dangerous effects your clothes are having on your own health? Award-winning journalist Alden Wicker breaks open a story hiding in plain sight: the unregulated toxic chemicals that are likely in your wardrobe right now, how they’re harming you, and what you can do about it.

This textile fanatic learned a lot
Revisado: 11-27-23
I am a textile artist both yarn/wool arts and fabrics, having worked at yarn and fabric stores, and having been obsessed about all things fiber for at least four decades. I play a guessing game where I touch a garment and guess which fibers are in the mix. I still learned a great deal.
I was under the impression that synthetic fibers were always solution dyed before creating the fibers which will make up the fabric. I knew about disperse dyes for artists but stuck to safer acid (as in vinegar) dyes and wool/animal fibers.
Wow. No wonder I had a major reaction to polyester touching my skin during the years I worked cutting fabric as my job.

Historia
Today's feminist movement has a glaring blind spot, and paradoxically, it is women. Mainstream feminists rarely talk about meeting basic needs as a feminist issue, argues Mikki Kendall, but food insecurity, access to quality education, safe neighborhoods, a living wage, and medical care are all feminist issues. All too often, however, the focus is not on basic survival for the many, but on increasing privilege for the few. Author Mikki Kendall takes aim at the legitimacy of the modern feminist movement arguing that it has chronically failed to address the needs of all but a few women.

Revisado: 06-23-23
I’m 64 and was raised by an early feminist whose mother worked for the right of white women to vote. I’ve been working in the racial justice realm is since the late 80s. Still, I continue to read about justice of all sorts and I sure learned a lot from this book. It’s impossible to look at feminism and anti-racism as independent issues.
Thank you so much to Ms. Kendall for this incredible education.

Excellent research behind it, so informative!
Revisado: 05-22-23
This book is so well packed with good information, both statistical and human/emotional. So worthwhile!
I’m one of the people who was labeled “normal” BMI one day and, at the same weight the next day, I was labeled “overweight.” In other words, I’m not really fat, it’s a made up thing. I have known about this issue for years but I never got a clearer understanding of it as in this book.
I love so many people who are visibly categorized as fat… and I lost a loved one because they were not treated properly at the emergency room. They literally died because the staff did not treat treat them within the consideration of their body weight. They were 27 and otherwise pronounced healthy very recently by a doctor.
I have been recently helping a tall/ fat friend learn to sew their own clothes because it’s almost impossible to buy clothes even online for their sizing. It’s just wrong. We all deserve to be able to wear clothes without thinking about tugging them into place all day.
What would I do without my friends who are fat? The world is missing out on seeing their light and genius. I’m disgusted by what they have to put up with.
I highly recommend Aubrey Gordon’s co-podcast, Maintenance Phase. I knew a lot before finding it, but I know a lot more now.

Revisado: 01-18-23
I know a lot about fast fashion snd its impact on the earth and humans in different regions. Yet: this informed me and kept me interested and informed. It gave me new areas to pursue knowledge.
I feel better/energized after this listen. Also, the author did a good job reading.
My only discomfort was that when French words are pronounced in French, I can get lost. It’s part of the history of fashion, but it’s hard on lay people who studied other languages (or perhaps only their own).

The occasion was a big birthday. And it inspired two close friends to get together in Dharamsala for a talk about something very important to them. The friends were His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The subject was joy. Both winners of the Nobel Prize, both great spiritual masters and moral leaders of our time, they are also known for being among the most infectiously happy people on the planet.
