Historia
A former foster kid, Jane has led a solitary life as a waitress in the suburbs, working hard to get by. After graduating, Jane accepts a job offer at a distinguished law firm in downtown Toronto. Everyone at the firm thinks she is destined for failure because her boss is the notoriously difficult Edward Rosen. But Jane has known far worse trials and refuses to back down. Edward has never been able to keep an assistant—he’s too loud, too messy, too ill-tempered. Yet there’s something about Jane that intrigues him. As their orbits overlap, their feelings begin to develop.

A pretty good retelling/modernization of Jane Eyre.
Revisado: 02-18-24
Didn’t love the narrator. She was too monotone and failed to bring the characters to life. Also didn’t love the gratuitous swearing. It didn’t elevate the storyline and wasn’t necessary.

Historia
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells - taken without her knowledge - became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects.

Good story, but too scientific for me
Revisado: 11-24-23
Henrietta’s story and contribution to science and modern medicine are important, and for this reason I’m glad I read the book. But it was too scientific with a lot of detail that I didn’t really need to hear about. A short Wikipedia article was as much attention to this as I needed.

Cute story, but a little complicated to follow.
Revisado: 08-17-23
I would have preferred two narrators to help define the Joyce chapters and the third person narrator. The narrator was enjoyable, but didn’t do a great job of differentiating between characters. The plot was good, but there were A LOT of characters to keep track of, which is even more difficult in audio format.

Lots of sex and the *f* word makes for lazy writing
Revisado: 08-22-22
Interesting plot, but so much graphic sex and the *f* word instead of character development felt lazy and caused me to disconnect from the stories and the characters. Glad I didn’t have to use a credit for this one, or I’d be asking for a refund.

Nick Winters and Noel Carter have known each other their whole lives. After years of shared family holidays, working together on the Winters’ Christmas tree farm, and being each other's safe haven, they wouldn't dream of crossing the line from friends to something more.... But when Nick comes home for the holidays after serving overseas and finds that his long-term girlfriend has decided to get her stocking stuffed elsewhere, Noel is there to pick him up and show him that instead of a Blue Christmas he can still have a Wonderful Christmastime without his cheating ex.

Revisado: 12-26-21
Not especially original, and I got tired of Noel and her emotional issues. I would have liked it better if the songs on the playlist actually played, and if we could have heard Nick and Noel singing. And that the narrators just voiced one part to each other, instead of one person reading the whole chapter and then switching off. Won’t be bothering with the rest of them.

Historia
Two travelers - Rachel Katzman and Liam Finucane - arrive in a field in rural England, disheveled and weighed down with hidden money. Turned away at a nearby inn, they are forced to travel by coach all night to London. They are not what they seem but rather colleagues who have come back in time from a technologically advanced future, posing as wealthy West Indies planters - a doctor and his spinster sister. Their mission: meet, befriend, and steal from Jane Austen herself.

Failure to execute
Revisado: 08-31-20
As a huge JA fan, I was excited to read this. What a disappointment! Both the story and the narrator failed miserably for me. I was not able to connect with the main character in a way that made me care about her. The author failed to portray Jane Austen in a way that made me feel like I knew her better (even though I know that any such portrayal cannot be verified), and the narrator made her sound like an old stuffy snob. The ending dragged on and on. I would have preferred them to stay in the past. The story just lacked real interest and I even stopped listening for a week and only went back to say I had finished it.

Pretty Good
Revisado: 10-17-19
The book switches back and forth in time, which was a little confusing as an audiobook, so the chapter headings that indicate the year are important to pay attention to. Lucy does the female voices well, but I didn’t care for her male voices, especially Edward.

Lovely story.
Revisado: 07-08-19
I am a sucker for any story set in WWII Britain, and this story didn’t disappoint. Marisa does a great job on all the accents (English, French & Canadian). My only complaint is that women narrators don’t usually do men’s voices very well, and I wish the publishers would pay for male voices. But overall an excellent story and production!
