Historia
From the collection Mary Russell's War, "Stately Holmes" delivers the author's signature blend of narrative mastery and historical detail while shining light on previously unexplored corners of the Russell-Holmes universe. Laurie R. King blends her long-running brand of crime fiction with historical treats and narrative sleight of hand.

Trivial and obvious. A disappointing installment
Revisado: 05-25-19
Unfortunately this series has been going downhill for years and this is a trivial addition to the Russell/Holmes collection. Jenny Sterlin remains a fantastic narrator which is the only reason I bothered to finish it. I haven't been able to make it through the more recent (longer) ones.

Historia
Nothing - not even murder - keeps Pauline Sokol off the case. Pauline Sokol, ex-RN turned medical insurance fraud investigator, finds herself embroiled in a scam at a weight loss clinic in the scenic New Mexico desert. As if being undercover isn't bad enough, she's not allowed to eat chocolate, she lives in a body suit that weighs a ton, and her roommate turns out to be a mysteriously hot guy! Nearly finished with what seems to be an open-and-shut case, Pauline befriends a woman who is an undercover reporter, also interested in the goings-on at the weight loss clinic.

Awkward and plotless

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I enjoy Amy Rubinate's work, which is why I tried this. However, the story was just terrible and made virtually NO sense. There wasn't even any real mystery to follow or clues to uncover and the narrative jumped from scene to scene without any connection.
Has Dead Weight turned you off from other books in this genre?
Absolutely
What aspect of Amy Rubinate’s performance would you have changed?
I like her performance. I wish she had better material to work with here.
What character would you cut from Dead Weight?
ALL of them -- it's a waste of time.
Any additional comments?
I won't try this author again.
