We have never had so much information at our fingertips and yet most of us don’t know how the world really works. This book explains seven of the most fundamental realities governing our survival and prosperity. From energy and food production, through our material world and its globalization, to risks, our environment and its future, How the World Really Works offers a much-needed reality check—because before we can tackle problems effectively, we must understand the facts.

Man yells at cloud
Revisado: 09-28-22
I liked some of the other books of Mr Smil in the he past. This book however, ended up just leaving an irritating impression.
While the book does contain some interesting data points, it also spends a good chunk of its content crapping on everything in the modern world while offering only feeble incremental solutions while in the same time complaining no one has the solutions. On occasions the author contradicts himself between chapters.
The thesis also doesn't highlight what appears to be one of the keys to the solution, that of drastically reducing the world population, that seems to be only solution that comes to mind given the postulates in the book.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Simply amazing
Revisado: 02-13-22
Project Hail Mary is my favorite book in a long time. i don't want to spoil any of it, so enough to say that the writing is fantastic, witty and in the same time tons of science and science fiction goodness.
The audiobook delivery is spectacular, the best of all books i listened to so far.
A true masterpiece!

Good ideas, so so execution
Revisado: 10-12-21
While the premise is really interesting, mixing science, magic, time travel..., the delivery let's a lot to be desired, both from a writing perspective and the audio delivery.
Writing style is very hard to digest, instead of a narration, tries to use various"documents" characters have written to explain what happens, which sometimes becomes silly.
also the attempts at corporate humor do little to make the story more interesting and are somewhat cringe.
The audio delivery is a little difficult to listen to, the narrator tries to imitate all sort of accents and have various voices for the characters. Some of them are somewhat difficult to listen to and therefore make the narration less enjoyable.

Historia
Roughly a month has passed in-game since Thorn's attack on the Twilight Throne. In that time, the dark city has managed to recover and rebuild - growing the ranks of Original Sin at the same time. Which is good, because that brief respite is over. The Avatar of Flame has risen within the depths of the northern desert and has thrown down a digital gauntlet to Jason - with a gate piece hanging in the balance. Even worse? His opponent is none other than Finn Harris, the "father of modern AI". The same man that may have been behind Thorn's attack on the Twilight Throne.

absolutely brilliant
Revisado: 02-06-20
I loved this first book of the new AO saga!
as much as I enjoyed Jason's arc, Finn's story resonated with me.in a powerful way. the intrigue is masterfully crafted, the pace of the story keeps one on edge and the style of writing has matured.
the audio performance was amazing, similarly to previous AO books

interesting thesis but too slow
Revisado: 10-30-17
the main thesis in the book is interesting and the narration is nice however the story drags on and development is very slow and the "revelations" are very predictable. Overall ok but not stellar.

Historia
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.
