Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

A memoir that unravels into social commentary
Revisado: 04-16-25
I loved the first 1/2-3/4 of the book. The story started strong with great character development and humor, tragedy and heartbreak and insight about poverty, family, etc. As his education and life story continues the storyline for me became more stale and distant from the memoir for me. It became more timeline and biographical and less entrenched in storytelling.
Overall JD reading his own story is well done but I think a more critical edit of the second half of the book would have kept the reader more engaged.

I’m really like the story. It is a great story. But I wish that it had the same narrator as the last kindness club book.

Something big, something brilliant, something that will leave a lasting legacy at their school. It should be easy-peasy for these experts, especially now that their principal has gone from archnemesis to pranking protege. Historia
On Christmas Eve, 2017, Tess Henry was found dead in a dumpster in Las Vegas. Tess was a 28-year-old new mother, a former honor roll student, and a high school basketball player from suburban Roanoke, Virginia, a place ravaged by the national opioid crisis. The New York Times best-selling author Beth Macy chronicled Tess and her mom, Patricia, through Tess' harrowing, years-long battle to recover from heroin addiction in her award-winning book Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company That Addicted America.

Heartbreaking story of the reality of addiction
Revisado: 05-19-20
This is a story about what could happen to your neighbor, your friend, or your child. It was heartbreaking on so many levels to hear about how a simple decision could spiral into a lifetime of addiction and ultimately for Tess death. The personal interactions of the author with Tess and the various people that touched her life helped connect us to the story directly.
There were a few things that I found when I finish the story that I would’ve wanted to know. I didn’t feel that the reasons that Tess started using prescription medication were very clear. I know that it’s not acceptable to blame the victim but in some ways I felt that Tess was also put on a pedestal without taking some responsibility for her decisions.
I hope that someday Ronan will know the full story of his mother not just the good things, not just the hard things, but the full picture of who she was.
I want to thank the author for bringing this topic to light. For bringing humanity to addiction and to all folks who may be living on the street. It painted a portrait of a dark life but a life still with dignity and a life still worth saving.

Fascinating and unbelievable story , riveting
Revisado: 02-06-20
I was interested and intrigued from the first moment of the story . The individuals involved, the character of the family who this affected and all of the unbelievable twists and turns the true story took. I couldn’t put the story down and it was shocking and crazy. I would have loved to hear more from the entire family and more detail but it was very intriguing nonetheless.

You’ve heard of an Essex Girl or even a Chelsea Girl, but what about a Hounslow Girl? Definition of a Hounslow Girl: a young Muslim woman who wears hooped earrings with her headscarf and grapples with traditional values while hustling her way through urban London. The Diary of a Hounslow Girl is a bold and provocative one-person play, written and performed by Ambreen Razia. From the joys of traditional Pakistani weddings to fights on the night bus, this is a comic story of dreams, aspirations and coming of age, told through the eyes of a 16-year-old British Muslim girl.

A surprising look at culture
Revisado: 01-16-19
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The narrator’s voice and the interesting format of the presentation (almost like a play being acted out) were very intriguing.
The character was funny, sassy, sharp witted, intelligent and struggling between the culture she lives in and that of her family and family religion.
I found the ending a bit sad but the story redeeming and complex.
