Historia
In the New York Times best-seller Darth Bane: Path of Destruction, Drew Karpyshyn painted a gripping portrait of a young man’s journey from innocence to evil. That man was Darth Bane, a twisted genius whose iron will, fierce ambition, and strength in the dark side of the Force made him a natural leader among the Sith - until his radical embrace of an all-but-forgotten wisdom drove him to destroy his own order...and create it anew from the ashes.

Not a great continuation of book 1
Revisado: 03-15-24
The audio narrator read the story fine but I was still annoyed by the use of sound effects that were sometimes too loud for me to concentrate on the dialogue and sometimes mismatched, like the sounds of lightsabers clashing during the part of battle where no lightsabers are clashing. The characters of Bane and his apprentice were mildly interesting but there was no character growth and no real challenge to their morality, belief system, or game plan. They were two trains riding the tracks that they laid down in book 1. Other characters that I was starting to take an interest in were written out of the story. I don't even know Bane's end goal for this series so I can't measure his wins and losses or appreciate his strategy. It is mostly just a story of obvious duplicity, death, and a magically overpowered supervillain.

Historia
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

A novel that really scratches my sci fi itch
Revisado: 03-15-24
The audio narrator is clear, speaks at a good pace, and is good enough with voices and accents that I can easily tell which characters are speaking. The story itself is REAL sci fi because it discusses the science of several tech inventions we don't have (whether or not the science is real is irrelevant to me as long as it isn't so outlandish that even a non-scientist non-engineer can spot the BS). The only let-down was that the primary technology the book is centered around was not presented with a more interesting ethical twist for readers to chew on -I don't need there to be an "evil" side to tech but the fun of inventing new tech is testing the boundaries of what might be considered acceptable. I also really like that the physical features, societies, and tech levels of the aliens are so varied. The main character is very likable, humorous (though not laugh out loud funny), and heroically capable in a common sense, with a little bit of luck, right time, right place kind of way instead of someone who ridiculously outmatches everyone else (like Jason Bourne). Top it off with the fact that the protagonist never wins anything 100%, there is always some kind of loss, which makes the story feel more relatable.

A well-written story about the rise of a bad guy
Revisado: 01-30-24
First the audio. The narrator was great - good voice, pace, and distinguishing the different characters. I rated performance low because the music and sound effects they included behind the narration were distracting and completely unnecessary. Some listeners might not have this problem but with the music and sound effects as loud as they sometimes were, it made it difficult for me to hear or concentrate on the words being said. I can insert my own mental battle music, thank you very much. As for the story, it did a great job of telling the challenging rise of the bad guy, Darth Bane, but doing it in a way that made me frequently sympathize. The story *felt* like it belonged in Star Wars universe. I'm not the kind of fan who recognizes inconsistencies or non-canon materiel so it all sounded kosher to me. I especially appreciated the inclusion of more Sith mythos and explanations for why dark side force, and Sith rules, are the way they are. SPOILER: I'm a big fan of stories where the bad guy wins and this scratches the itch.

An okay story with perfect narrator
Revisado: 01-30-24
The audio narrator was perfect for the job. His voice and speaking style seemed to perfectly match my image of the protagonist, Dresden. The pace of the story and the description of scenes and events were great - just enough for me to picture it but not so much that it weighed the story down. I liked Dresden's personality, though I could do with just a little more humor and a little less "my life is hard and painful". Unfortunately, the story itself was only so-so. It was a decent enough introduction into the magical world of Dresden, but I could barely drum up any interest for the mystery itself since breadcrumb clues were few and far between. I'm not very good at guessing the end of stories but this one was predictable. Possible spoilers: The worst thing was that one of the characters didn't share information near the beginning of the story that would have helped wrap things up much faster and avoided some of the trouble and drama for Dresden. For me, drama because of lack of communication for no good reason is a tired excuse for dragging out a story. That and the predictable deus ex machina at the end made it hard for me to respect the book.

Anna does boring things for terrible people because even criminals need office help and she needs a job. Working for a monster lurking beneath the surface of the world isn’t glamorous. But is it really worse than working for an oil conglomerate or an insurance company? In this economy? A sharp, witty, modern debut, Hench explores the individual cost of justice through a fascinating mix of millennial office politics, heroism measured through data science, body horror, and a profound misunderstanding of quantum mechanics.

Interesting take on the superhero genre
Revisado: 12-22-23
The audio quality was great. The voice narrator was easy to understand, spoke at a good speed, used distinctive voices for the various characters, but I can understand how some listeners might consider her vocal fry or character voices annoying (her voice of 12 year old boy sounded like a bad 6 year old). Regardless, I found the writing appealing and the story compelling. She used the occasional SAT word but was otherwise plain English. She included just enough detail to paint the scene and get a decent idea of the technology or science without going too deep into it. I like the story arc of the main character as well as the minor arcs of some heroes and villains. Most of the big reveals were interesting and entertaining but nothing shocking or revolutionary. There's a little humor scattered here and there but none of it was laugh out loud funny. I would consider this a straight drama with a few action beats.

A decent, short thriller with flaws
Revisado: 11-27-23
The reader did a fine job. I could understand everything they said and they distinguished the various character voices well. Audio quality was fine. The story itself was interesting and had a couple of nice twists to it. I'm frustrated by the fact that a couple of characters kept some useful information secret until last minute, unnecessarily prolonging their predicament, but I think I can understand why they didn't want to share the information - because it would have gotten them into big trouble and they didn't want to share it until it was absolutely necessary. I am disappointed with the fact that there is no way you can solve the mystery before critical information is shared near the end of the story. I mean, you might get lucky, but I suggest reading this book with the assumption that you are along for the ride, not a detective piecing clues together. I very much liked the outcome at the end of the book for the protagonist (the trapped woman), but others may not.

A return to what is good about this series
Revisado: 11-03-23
The audio quality is good and the reader voices the different characters better than he did the previous book. The supporting characters are also more interesting in this book than the last one, but not enough to truly care about most of them. We learn one or two interesting bits of trivia about the main character, and the main character seems to actually grow and change a little, so that's good. The story ending was disappointing to me because it seemed set back/rewind much of the personal progress that the character made. Overall, the story was mildly entertaining but the main character just isn't that entertaining, there is not enough new stuff introduced, and not enough character growth or history uncovered, to keep me wanting more. I think I'll stop here and switch to a different

Sci-fi's favorite antisocial AI is back on a mission. The case against the too-big-to-fail GrayCris Corporation is floundering, and more importantly, authorities are beginning to ask more questions about where Dr. Mensah's SecUnit is. And Murderbot would rather those questions went away. For good. Martha Wells' Rogue Protocol is the third in the Murderbot Diaries series, starring a humanlike android who keeps getting sucked back into adventure after adventure, though it just wants to be left alone, away from humanity and small talk.

A boring detour from SecUnit's life journey
Revisado: 10-21-23
The production quality and speaker's voice are clear and easily understandable. Unfortunately, his character voices and accents are cartoonish and amateur (even more than the earlier books). SecUnit is his wonderful self and, of course, he makes a new "friend" with a bot who has a distinctly different personality. Unfortunately, this story is not as engaging as the prior stories. I found myself losing interest several times. The eventual reveal of the big mystery felt lame and not worth the time spent uncovering it. I feel like this story did not advance SecUnit's personality, story, or skills. Like Aliens 3, it was the same character acting the same way in a different place for a reason that felt ultimately unimportant.

An entertaining continuation of the story
Revisado: 10-14-23
This is a worthwhile continuation of the first book (which you really should read first). The audio quality and performance were fine. The story kept me intrigued. I like that not everything was resolved as desired. Sometimes, the good guys don't win them all. The human characters, for the most part, didn't have much personality but the most important one did and the non-human characters, of course, had plenty of character to make up for it.

All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

A marvelous story with a fascinating character
Revisado: 10-09-23
The audio quality and performance were well done. The story was engaging. I prefer heroes who have flaws. Not just quirks like telling dad jokes or having a slight limp in their walk, but character flaws that create barriers the character must overcome to succeed. The main character of this story is just such a flawed hero. Not only that but the flaws are relatable - I have friends and relatives with these flaws. Watching the character work through the flaws WITHOUT eliminating them, and grow a little as a person, was the most enjoyable part of the story. The plot of the story was not particularly original or interesting to me except as device to call the hero to action, but that was enough. The story did not need to be any longer than it was, yet it left me wanting more. I definitely want another story featuring the main character in their next adventure.
