She was a successful ad sales rep in Manhattan. He was a homeless 11-year-old panhandler on the street. He asked for spare change; she kept walking. They met up nearly every week for years and built an unexpected, life-changing friendship that has today spanned almost three decades.

Real, but not exaggerated.
Revisado: 12-26-23
There was never profanity used. More editors need to understand it isn’t as necessary as they believe.
Honest, but not grossly meticulous in the tragic details.

Revisado: 06-26-20
As far as dystopias go, this post-big-population tech story takes a fresh tack by peeling back the layers on our own world to show us an ugly tyranny deep within it. I appreciated the heroism, clean content, and lively performance by the author.

Historia
Once we were drivers, the open road alive with autonomy, adventure, danger, trust, and speed. Today we are as likely to be in the back seat of an Uber as behind the wheel ourselves. Tech giants are hurling us toward a shiny, happy "self-driving" future, selling utopia but equally keen to advertise to a captive audience strapped into another expensive device. Are we destined, then, to become passengers, not drivers? Why We Drive reveals that much more may be at stake than we might think.

While the last 30-40 minutes had me arching one eyebrow in slight confusion (it merits a re-read), the arc of Snow's rise to power was a great story to behold. Alas I suppose I will always have questions, but this was a wonderful book.

I liked the cover art, and Ledford has a great voice for narrating. This story just dragged on a little too long and was too on-the-nose.

Unoriginal ideas + tons of profanity
Revisado: 07-09-19
I really wanted to get into this book, but Taylor departed wildly from his established Bobiverse style. "Outland" started as a very very close copy of Steven Gould's "Wildside," right down to the interdimensional gate and the Ice Age animals on the other side.
Then he just started slapping ideas together! It was basically a grab bag of "Lost" and "The Walking Dead" with even flatter characters and horrible dialogue. And Ray Porter did an awful job of voicing the female characters. In the end, the only interesting bits were the science facts.
I hope he goes back to writing the Bobiverse, this was just...bad.
