What did you love best about Brotopia?

Just finished "Brotopia", Emily Chang's much-anticipated study of the ingrown biases against women (and minorities) in Silicon Valley.

Working in tech (albeit in Seattle and on the sales end of the business) and raising two girls, I felt both pride for Chang's efforts and shame for the indifference with which I unkowingly embody the industry's biases against women.
Her tact was calculated and brilliant. While all of the write-ups on the book focus on the salacious details (and there are countless that make you ill), Chang begins with and continues to return to the fundamentals of a system that is inherently biased. Simple things like boys being targeted by toy companies selling entry-level computers goes so easily unnoticed, but if you hand a 3-year-old boy a simple computer and a 3-year-old girl a doll, who is more-likely to leave Stanford with a computer science degree 20 years later?

This is as important a book as has been written on the tech industry in years. You may love it. You may hate every word of it. But as tech becomes less about the technology and more about the user-experience, we cannot ignore 51% of the population.

The biases in the industry are no longer a problem for women, but a problem for us all.

I love everything about the content in this book, and generally prefer the author reading, but it was a bit choppy. In fairness, mine would be decidedly worse in delivery...she’s clearly brilliant, she’s just not a professional voice actor.

Great stories and lessons though. Will likely buy the book and go through it again.

Narrator does a great job of capturing Tyson without doing an impression, but the recording makes his voice change in patches. Editing is off.

The finest management book of the past five years. My third time through it.

Complaints about the narration are unfounded. He's slow and dramatic but it fits the story. Read at 1.25x speed and you'll love it.

What disappointed you about Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters?

This book was recommended by my dentist without asking my opinions on issues or my religious upbringing. I listened to an hour of the book, have deleted it and will no longer see that dentist.

I'm a very open-minded person, a progressive Christian with very moderate politics. This book is presented as a framework for parenting but is in fact an allegorical presentation of a very polarizing set of beliefs.

What could Meg Meeker have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Change the title. Change the content. Open her mind.

How could the performance have been better?

Performance was fine. Skewed by bad content.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The introduction was fine.

Among the finest business memoirs we've seen, beside Sam Walton and Ed Catmull. A wonderful read.

The orator was great, but mispronounced so many names it was distracting. Great content by Feldman as always.
