I admit it took a few chapters before I really got into this book, but the more I read the more interested I became. The author does a great job telling history and life stories from 5 distinct eras. The narration made it easy to identify each, since each era used a different narrator. The author didn’t rely on wildly unbelievable happenstance to connect each story - just geography, history, a little lit and a few family connections. I really enjoyed it.

A most unusual set of amusing and darkly humorous stories. Definitely not of the Hallmark genre, but somehow made me feel good. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Dual stories of Grandmother and Granddaughter tell of the conflicts, hardships, and beauty of Cuba and her people. Both are involved in complicated romances, and the political background of Cuba’s struggles are told from a Cuban viewpoint...and the US doesn’t look good in the telling. There is also an interesting aspect of those who stayed through the revolution and those who left and faired better in the US.
I knew little about Havana and the revolution, and learning made the story more interesting. The romances were a bit predictable.
I did love the narration. I want to roll my “r’s” like they do. Beautifully done!

I admit I did love that this story was about people I didn’t know much about, Empress Sisi and Emperor Franz Josel of Austria. And the time in history that was so pivotal in the events leading to WWI. But the history seemed trivialized by the over the top cliche characters and they were all so dramatic. It all seemed like a Harlequin romance- especially the first half of the book. I would have enjoyed a little more history, a little more Buda-Pest and Vienna, and a lot less “I love him!!!!”s .
