Very Very Powerful
Revisado: 09-29-19
I had to stop listening and just breathe several times with this book. I am aware of a great deal of the environmental damage and corruption in the United States and especially the West but to listen to the history laid out word by careful word, leaving no prisoners , is devastating, powerful, and enlightening. I feel a little wrung out, depressed and above all determined to do more than just donate to Sierra Club and pick up trash.

Historia
The Bronx, 1891. Virginia Loftin, the boldest of four artistic sisters in a family living in genteel poverty, knows what she wants most: to become a celebrated novelist despite her gender and to marry Charlie, the boy next door and her first love. When Charlie proposes instead to a woman from a wealthy family, Ginny is devastated; shutting out her family, she holes up and turns their story into fiction, obsessively rewriting a better ending.

I failed to find the characters engaging
Revisado: 06-18-16
I listened to the first half of this book with the hope that the story would become more interesting. Sadly, the story was slow and the characters seemed whiney. Depressing.

Historia
For Meridian Wallace - and many other smart, driven women of the 1940s - being ambitious meant being an outlier. Ever since she was a young girl, Meridian had been obsessed with birds, and she was determined to get her PhD, become an ornithologist, and make her mother's sacrifices to send her to college pay off. But she didn't expect to fall in love with her brilliant physics professor, Alden Whetstone. When he's recruited to Los Alamos, New Mexico, to take part in a mysterious wartime project, she reluctantly defers her own plans and joins him.

Women's Lib Comes to the New Mexico Desert
Revisado: 05-25-16
A cross section of seven decades as experienced by a woman living at Los Alamos. The description of the desert, the geology, the Indian history, and the crows that Meridian is studying is poetic. This is set against the harshness of the creation of the atomic bomb and the results in regard to WWII and ensuing wars. Meridian is a strong intelligent woman with a wry sense of humor throughout but she really finds her identity as the 1970's and Women's Liberation enter her world. I wish I could write as well as Elizabeth Church since this review really does not do the book justice but this novel deserves more than five stars.

Too Sweet, Not Enough Edge
Revisado: 05-18-16
Not up to Linda Howard's usual standards. I thought the 'evil" stepbrother character was the sexiest and most interesting part of the book and he was a secondary character.

I listened to about half of the stories until I decided they were not going to ever be something I really wanted to read. Just not that interesting or funny.

Historia
A debut novel already praised as "unbearably poignant and beautifully told" (Eimear McBride), this captivating story follows - over the course of four seasons - a misfit man who adopts a misfit dog. It is springtime, and two outcasts - a man ignored, even shunned by his village, and the one-eyed dog he takes into his quiet, tightly shuttered life - find each other, by accident or fate, and forge an unlikely connection. As their friendship grows, their small seaside town suddenly takes note of them.

So Beautifully Worded
Revisado: 05-01-16
A very simply told story of an old man and a rescue dog but each word is so perfectly placed and perfectly chosen that this novel made me feel as if I was listening to music. John Keating's voice and Sara Baume's writing will make this book a top choice of 2016.
