Why the five stars
Revisado: 11-01-24
Slow, plodding, and no real reason to like the protagonist. 5 hours in, 8 to go and it has not given any plot where I can feel included in solving the puzzle. Yes stuff has happened but yikes a million words in between those moments. Just plods along. Time is short and there are many other good books to invest time in out there.

It's fall 2007. A well-timed leak has revealed that the US government might have engaged in first contact. Cora Sabino is doing everything she can to avoid the whole mess, since the force driving the controversy is her whistleblower father. Even though Cora hasn't spoken to him in years, his celebrity has caught the attention of the press, the internet, the paparazzi, and the government - and with him in hiding, that attention is on her. She neither knows nor cares whether her father's leaks are a hoax and wants nothing to do with him.

Couldn’t wait for it to end - why the 5 star reviews?
Revisado: 08-02-24
I don’t get it. This is an ok story, but feels like it is centered around emotions rather than science fiction. Don’t get me wrong, it’s ok, just not worth the drawn out 15 hour experience for me personally.

Waste of 3 books
Revisado: 07-17-24
Nothing resolved, mess of out of time scenes. No idea who is alive, who’s is dead, when chapters are in the past or present. 1st book is great, second little happens, 3rd is a huge let down.

Historia
We are in the midst of a global mental health crisis, and mental illnesses are on the rise. But what causes mental illness? And why are mental health problems so hard to treat? Drawing on decades of research, Harvard psychiatrist Dr. Chris Palmer outlines a revolutionary new understanding that for the first time unites our existing knowledge about mental illness within a single framework: mental disorders are metabolic disorders of the brain. Brain Energy will transform the field of mental health, and the lives of countless people around the world.

Historia
Seventeen-year-old Nadia lives in Canaan, a quiet city in an idyllic world, hemmed in by high walls that are constructed of a material no one in her town recognizes. Every 12 years the people of Canaan undergo a collective Forgetting; in the days before, the town devolves into a chaos of bloody violence, and afterward the people are left without any trace of memory of themselves, their families, their lives. Nadia has never forgotten, however.

The lack of believability
Revisado: 03-14-24
I don’t understand why there are such high ratings. The story is ok, the facts that the entire premise is based on has so many holes in it if you are a thinking person. A remote colony finds really modern day things like superior medicine. The cure, But one would wonder how if everyone who forgot would not know that there was a cure to make, or that their science was remembered to do such an incredible thing. Similar hmmm moments are dosed through the story. This will be a spoiler free review. Read Hyperion by Dan Simmons if you want good science fiction.

In a narrative that spans geography and time, from the Atlantic Ocean in the 17th century to a correctional institute in Texas in the near future, and told from the perspectives of five very different characters, Speak considers what it means to be human and what it means to be less than fully alive.

A bunch of meh novella strung together with no real connective tissue
Revisado: 10-20-23
It’s blah. Don’t believe the reviews as they do not reflect the genre or content well. It’s emotional, lacks the right stuff to pull separate stores together into one narrative - Hyperion by Dan Simmons does this like a champ with 7 stores but he manages to have a common theme, storylines that mean something to the whole at the end. Unfortunately “Speak” did not attempt to do this. Instead the editor thought they could smush meh together and make it meh plus.
The fragmented narrative made it difficult to connect with the characters, and the multiple storylines felt disjointed. The AI themes were intriguing, but they were overshadowed by the lackluster execution. Overall, it left me wanting more coherence and depth in the storytelling.

Victoria McQueen has an uncanny knack for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photograph, answers to unanswerable questions. When she rides her bicycle over the rickety old covered bridge in the woods near her house, she always emerges in the places she needs to be. Vic doesn't tell anyone about her unusual ability, because she knows no one will believe her. She has trouble understanding it herself.

First few hours great, the rest needs 7 hours cut
Revisado: 03-20-20
The story started out well, full of excitement and anticipation, then kinda dragged on and on a bit. I live the author's imagination and as excited to read more of his stuff. Then after about 10 hours of this 20-hour audiobook, something was off and I felt the story drawing out and drifting. I was checking lower star reviews on audible to see if I was duped by the 5-star spamming ratings - think I was. I should have returned it but wanted to see if it got any better. Now almost at the end, the author does bring things together, but I just don't care anymore, I am tired and want a fresh listen that will grip me and deliver. It just does not have enough story for the scaffolding to make it a memorable read. I have similar issues with some of Steven Kings longer books as well, too much not important stuff.
The performance was great but was difficult to make out who was who in some points.

When the good guy is a bad guy
Revisado: 03-01-20
I don’t know about the hype. This book promotes the bad guy doing bad things knowing his ultimate destiny warrants it. I’m sure it goes somewhere great but without an actual story and something for me to believe I’m in out of this series.
