Historia
Political disintegration is a persistent feature of world history. The Collapse of Complex Societies, though written by an archaeologist, will therefore strike a chord throughout the social sciences. Any explanation of societal collapse carries lessons not just for the study of ancient societies, but for the members of all such societies in both the present and future.

Overly academic
Revisado: 04-06-25
Although I found the book overly academic, and even pedantic and hard to listen to because it was like reading a textbook, the information is excellent and Dr. Tainter really knows his stuff.

Excellent book, one of the best all year
Revisado: 12-15-24
This is an excellent book, well written about a fairly terrifying subject. I really didn’t understand details about the culture in China under Xi until this book. It’s so obvious that he is making the same mistake mistakes as previous Chinese leaders. You see what happens to a society when no one can speak the truth, when everyone must be “harmonized.“ I am afraid that the coming fascist Trump administration will also use surveillance tools, thank you for writing this excellent book. Thank you for going up against dictators and totalitarian leaders to write this.

Humanity is on the precipice of a great climate migration, and Americans will not be spared. Tens of millions of people are likely to be driven from the places they call home. Poorer communities will be left behind, while growth will surge in the cities and regions most attractive to climate refugees. America will be changed utterly.

Want to understand our “new future”? Read this book
Revisado: 08-02-24
This is an excellent book from an excellent reporter who I’ve been reading for years. Abrahm Lustgarten doesn’t masterful job of telling the story of our recent history in extreme weather, and what it pretends for the future. He tells the story, which is devastating really. In a way that’s accessible and also digestible, and you always learn something from Mr. Lustgarten. Thank you for this great book.

One man—visionary billionaire restaurant chain magnate T. R. Schmidt, Ph.D.—has a Big Idea for reversing global warming, a master plan perhaps best described as “elemental.” But will it work? Ranging from the Texas heartland to the Dutch royal palace in the Hague, from the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas to the sunbaked Chihuahuan Desert, Termination Shock brings together a disparate group of characters from different cultures and continents who grapple with the real-life repercussions of global warming.

Great characters
Revisado: 04-18-24
I really enjoyed this book, the characters that were created are likable and interesting and ring true. I can see why Neal Stephenson’s writing is compared to Kim Stanley Robinson. I hear the resemblance. I also enjoyed the discussion about geo-engineering - which we all need to learn about before billionaires re-make our life support system, Planet Earth.

Why would someone who cares so deeply about ecological change want to stop talking about it now? At Work in the Ruins is the book that grew out of Dougald’s attempt to answer that question. He delves deeply into what he discovered during the globally shared isolating Covid moment, why the virus and the measures taken against it drove so many of us to despair, and how we can re-find our bearings if the pandemic is not the big event that changes everything but simply one in a chain of emergencies that are bringing about the end of the world as we knew it.

Historia
Inhabitants of planet Earth are confronted with the reality that by 2050, or sooner, large parts of the Earth could be uninhabitable. We are indisputably living in the Sixth Great Extinction. We know that countless humans are reeling with climate anxiety and experiencing fear, anger, grief, despair, dread, and understandably attempting to cope with the reality of potential human extinction with massive amounts of denial.

Baker does what few are willing to do: face the truth about our predicament
Revisado: 02-05-24
I’ve been reading Carolyn Baker‘s books since I ran across one of her early books: “walking the spiritual path of the collapse of civilization,” which really caught my eye. I’ve been working in policy (Congress, state legislatures, courts, PUCs) for over 40 years, and in energy policy for 20. What is becoming more and more obvious, especially in the last couple of years, is that we are not headed to a good place. We could’ve addressed many of our problems, including climate change, biodiversity loss, poverty, but we didn’t. Instead, the greedy psychopaths who run things are throwing their own children and grandchildren completely under the bus. Want to understand why this is happening? Carolyn‘s background in history informs her psychology, and IMHO she is spot on. I’ve always been surprised that Carolyn is not a best seller. Perhaps it shows my naïveté, because what Carolyn is talking about is what people need to hear but choose NOT to. We’d rather have reality TV than actual reality. As the level of cognitive dissonance in our society grows louder and louder, Carolyn Baker will help you to deal with all of it. Thanks for another great book CB!

Historia
The world is waking up to a new reality: wildfires are now seasonal in California, the Northeast is getting less and less snow each winter, and the ice sheets in the Arctic and Antarctica are melting fast. Heat is the first order threat that drives all other impacts of the climate crisis. And as the temperature rises, it is revealing fault lines in our governments, our politics, our economy, and our values. The basic science is not complicated: Stop burning fossil fuels tomorrow, and the global temperature will stop rising tomorrow.

Another great book from Jeff Goodell, thank you! I’m grateful that Jeff interspersed the difficult climate news with stories about real people, and especially the polar bear story at the end, sad as the story is. Jeff gives it to us straight but he’s not maudlin or depressing. I lived in PHX for 27 yrs off and on and I know heat.

I adore Richard Powers’ writing. This is a beautiful book, it took my breath away at times. Robin’s understanding of our current terrifying times made the story immediate and urgent. Powers’ descriptions and characters ring true. I fell for all of them, and they will stay with me. I fully expect Robin’s reaction to ecological destruction to become more widespread, and my heart breaks for what we have lost and will lose.

As good as KSR or Richard Powers
Revisado: 04-03-23
This was a deeply engrossing look at our climate changed future. Mr. Markley is an outstanding writer, very painterly. The book had me hooked from the beginning, and the second half was riveting. I could relate to so much of the narrative. I’ve been working on climate issues for 18 years now, in the very wonky world of regulatory policy, as an expert witness, advocate, policy advisor, researcher, public interest intervener, and other roles. I’ve taught energy policy and how it relates to climate at the University level. This book captures the climate crisis and the violence crisis that grips our country today. His character development is superb. I found myself living in the world of the characters for days on end. That is the mark of a great book. Mr. Markley’s portrayal of the addict character was painful and realistic. His descriptions of living in a future with much more poverty, high food prices, and disasters like grid outages was very real. I felt like I was living it along with the characters. Great book, stays with you, marvelous accomplishment.
