Five years ago Corin Cadence's brother entered the Serpent Spire - a colossal tower with ever-shifting rooms, traps, and monsters. Those who survive the spire's trials return home with an attunement: a mark granting the bearer magical powers. According to legend, those few who reach the top of the tower will be granted a boon by the spire's goddess. He never returned. Now it's Corin's turn. He's headed to the top floor, on a mission to meet the goddess.

intricately written relationships
Revisado: 04-30-25
the story is interesting and a nice listen, but I'm especially impressed by how complex and well written the relationships between people are. it seems that the author has a deep understanding of how people relate to each other and how multilayered true relationships with colorful histories are. it's a fresh breath of air in the current fantasy literature scene, where relationships often feel like plot devices and flat caricatures. can't recommend enough for people who enjoy characters and relationships with depth.

Historia
When our protagonist, Andrei, discovers that his girlfriend has cheated on him, he finds himself with an unexpected choice to make: a quick death or a new life in another world he knows absolutely nothing about. Andrei chooses life and sets off alongside his pet, a ginger cat with a limp, for a primeval world fraught with danger. The trouble is...who is whose pet becomes entirely unclear; the man's consciousness is split between both creatures, and the little cat gets a far greater share of intelligence and wit than his hulking master.

a bit idiotic but fine
Revisado: 04-14-25
light and ok listen, but often frustratingly idiotic and unrealistic. people behave in ways that are just not believable, a bit too often to be ignored. kind of like forced conflict and drama, people being stupid just to create a reason for the events. if that doesn't bother you, it's a fun story

almost didn't read this because of some reviews ranting about the MCs insufferability, since I cannot stand stupid characters that figuratively run into a glass door again and again, but I found Momo very relatable and not stupid at all. I was very entertained and can't wait for the next book in the series. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who loves morbidly cute animal companions and light and fun adventure books.

a fun listen
Revisado: 09-02-24
the series as a whole definitely developed into enjoyable character arcs and an entertaining plot.
my only true gripe is that the reader either developed it during this series, or I just didn't notice it at first, but she does this constant scoffing while talking, like everyone was constantly saying something extremely witty, sarcastic or arrogant, something like that. It's pretty annoying and very unnecessary. the writing style of dialogue did develop into being always witty, which is a bit tiresome at times.
there has been a bit of "everyone is the same character"- problem at times, like many people emoting in similar ways around the same times, like at one point there was tongue showing, at another many people were predatory grinning, etc. and the trends appear and disappear around the same times, you can definitely see what expression the writer felt pulled towards, instead of the characters having their unique habits and trends.
it's a bit like many the female characters were the same character, with minor differences in traits and looks. in spite of that, at least the female character-mold is kickass, so from a lighthearted series like this, it doesn't ruin the fun.

fun and lighthearted
Revisado: 08-21-24
it's a very magicky scifi, not very scientific at all, but it's a fun and actionpacked listen. I like the strong female MC a lot, all of her chaotic, adrenaline junkie energy is really fun and fresh. she is smart and intelligent, but tends to just feel a pull towards danger, which puts her in a lot of stupid dangerous situations.
I wish it either didn't have the romantic relationship, or it was done better, because it's pretty baseless and icky. the dude is controlling, petulant and patronising towards her and her way of life and at the same time claims to be in love with a woman like her, just like she is? those two things can't both be true. their relationship feels forced and weird, they talk about love when they seem to barely even know each other or have any chemistry. especially weird seems the magnitude of feeling Tanis has towards him, when she seems to pretty much just find his smile/laugh attractive and like his general vibe. she seems to act like she is just responding to an attractive guy who keeps pursuing her, and she doesn't seem to mind or even notice his controlling and patronising tendencies at all, which is not really in line with the rest of her personality imo.
I'm glad it's not a massive part of the story, so it doesn't ruin it altogether for me. relationships like this are just a pet peeve for me, I'm sure most people won't find it bothersome at all. I would definitely recommend this book!
audio narrator is not the best, but passable. she has a pleasant enough voice, but I have difficulty recognizing who is talking and keep mistaking her "male voices" as older feminine coded voices, so I end up thinking some men are women and then finding out they weren't. it's not that big of an issue and I like her different accents etc.

But when a journey through an interdimensional portal lands him in a world of talking animals and ominous sorcery, he finds he is on a very different trip indeed. Here, when he plays a strange instrument called a duar, peculiar things happen: powerful magic that may be the only way to stop a dark force that threatens his new world — and his old one.

funny and lighthearted
Revisado: 08-14-24
seems like a very promising series. only thing that bothers me is the constant objectification of women, especially by the main character, which makes him hard to like. On the other hand, the female characters are fun and great, so I have hopes the MC will change. Or maybe it's an attempt at humor, but it's not really funny at all, it's as humorous as a weird, too handsy uncle in an old tv show. If you find that kind of stuff funny then yeah, I guess this would be too. Other than that, I found myself laughing out loud many times throughout, so I would definitely recommend, the graphic audio and the musicality is done great as well, not like a musical, but more like a few passing seconds of singing to get the point across in an entertaining manner.

Fel'annár is a gifted immortal warrior embarking on his first patrol into the Deep Forest. Half-Silvan, half-Alpine, he battles the enemy from without, and the prejudice from within. But he learns more than just warfare when an arcane power begins to emerge, one he cannot control. While friendships are forged, a destiny unfolds, one that is tied to a past he knows nothing about. For others, though, it is only a matter of time before the truth is revealed, and the danger becomes real.

a good listen
Revisado: 08-01-24
the story is interesting and I like the main bunch of characters. I was invested in the story about halfway through although the plot was a bit of a slow one to take off.
the writing is at times difficult to follow and overly frilly, repeating words and being overly descriptive. battle scenes left a lot to hope for, but I saw an improvement towards the end and in the second book.
positives easily outweigh the negatives for me, so I can easily recommend this to anyone, who is up for some pretty elfy fantasy. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't have any patience for flowery descriptions and manner of speech, or other stereotypical elf stuff. I'm on the second book now and feel it's really pulling me in, so I recommend trying the second book even if you weren't quite sure about the first one.

When it comes to action and adventure, every hero needs a good sidekick. Holmes has Watson, Batman has Robin, and Daniel has . . . Orrin. More like brothers than friends, they always have each other's backs. And as Daniel is the big, strong, handsome type, Orrin is more than happy to remain in his shadow at school, at parties, pretty much everywhere. Then things take a turn for the truly weird when a terrible accident catapults the pair into a world totally unlike their own, in which the rules of a role-playing game hold sway.

annoying narration
Revisado: 05-09-24
i really don't understand why the skill and class etc names are said in an identical way even when it's just people mentioning them while talking. it just doesn't make sense and is seriously irritating. an old man saying "Hero" is identical to when a girl says it..? like some computer voice takes over whenever you mention a game element? I don't get it. I hope it's not going to be the same in book 2, it's a definite dealbreaker for me. if I didn't pay for the book I wouldn't probably even try to finish it, because it's constantly annoying me.
the relationship, social behavior/choices and emotions of the characters feel a bit nonsensical and inconsistent to me, and "the smart one" of the MCs doesn't really feel smart at all. I think that there could be a lot of potential in this series, if the writer is able to grow and develop in that department, and the weird narration choices are fixed. I also hate the typical litrpg thing of narrating stats and actions in a literal way of repeating the spell name as many times as it is cast etc. when you're reading things, you can just skip that, but in a listening format it would be so much better in a "I casted "___" 3 times"- format. but I guess that's common in litrpg, like reading insanely long stats out loud from beginning to end, instead of reading only the necessary part.

disappointed with the sexist attitudes
Revisado: 05-08-24
the series seemed to take a nosedive into sexist attitudes towards women and at the same time, women behaving increasingly childish and irrational due to the frustration of being treated as less than. all the "women need to be protected"-stuff has a constant infantilizing tone, which is a bit disappointing from a female author. I just don't get why people want to write sexism and discrimination into fantasy worlds, which really don't need to have it in them. seems like a huge disservice to all the readers who relate to female characters, to be subjected to that kind of attitudes even in the media that's supposed to be read for enjoyment. maybe it was supposed to come off as some kind of pushing against the sexist attitudes-plotline, but if it was, it missed the mark and sadly, made this series unenjoyable for me. especially when those attitudes were constantly pushed onto the women from their love interests, which just really feeds into some toxic dynamics.
