Lightning strikes again for Andy Weir

“Project Hail Mary” is a lot like “The Martian” … much more so than Weir’s second book. If that’s what you’ve been waiting for, then this is it. I loved the science, the main character’s persistence, the plot twists, and the scientifically sensible internal consistency.

This is my fourth Don Winslow book, and all have been absolutely great. They are gritty and sometimes hard to listen to (in terms of the things that happen) but fabulous nonetheless. I would read anything he wrote. Ray Porter has been the narrator for all four books, and his voice and cadence are perfect for the stories Winslow tells.

I've been a member of Audible since 2003, and I've listened to hundreds and hundreds of books. "A Monster Calls" is the shortest thing I've ever listened to and it is, seriously, one of the best, if not THE best.

The book is appallingly sad and heartbreaking, so have your tissues handy. At the same time, though, the book is about hope and healing. It reminded me of Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" in that the setting is horrific and apparently hopeless, but there are clues to tell you that things are going to be (relatively) okay for the child protagonist.

As a human being, I loved this book; as a child psychologist, loved it even more. The Yew tree's message to Conner about the value of truth -- no matter how apparently terrible -- is one of the pillars of mental health.

I can't recommend this book highly enough.

I put this book in the "I listened to it so you don't have to" category. The writing is fine, but the protagonist is an airheaded, annoying, reactive dope. She's supposed to be reasonably bright, but nothing she does makes any sense. The plot is thin and totally irrational -- there's no apparent reason for anyone to pursue the leads they pursue. I try to finish books I start if there are any redeeming qualities, but I dumped this with three hours to go. I just didn't care whether or how the author resolved the central mystery of the book. Nothing up to that point suggested that it was gong to be clever or satisfying.

An excellent listen, but not what you'd call uplifting…

The story traces the lives of three members of the McCulloch family from the mid-1800s through the latter half of the 20th century. The chapters switch from one family member to the next and then to the next, over and over throughout the book. It's an excellent read, and all of the readers are engaging (who doesn't like Will Patton?). A warning, though: none of the threads is particularly uplifting. In fact, the whole thing is a bit of a downer. An interesting and entertaining downer, but a downer nonetheless.

This is an engaging and funny book about the long life of Jack Crabb, Who participated in most of the significant events on the American frontier in the 1800s. Highly recommended.

I remember reading and enjoying all of Frederick Forsyth's books when I was a teenager. Unfortunately, that's not always the best recommendation. However, listening to "The Day of the Jackal" didn't disappoint – – it's as good as I thought it was going to be. It ages well. It's actually kind of interesting to see how difficult it was to put a little assassination together in the days before the Internet and cell phones. Anyway, this was an excellent listen, and now I'm moving on to another Forsyth book, "The Odessa File."

This is one of those books that you enjoy listening to you while you're in it, but which doesn't really stay with you for very long. It's fine with me, really, because this book kept me engaged and I was fairly eager to return to it day after day.

Should you have to finish a book in order to review it? It seems that that would skew the results a bit. I finished the first chapter and it became clear to me that this was a poorly written book which usually portends a poor story. I don't have the time for that. There are too many excellent books out there waiting for me.

I've been with audible for 13 years now and I've listened to hundreds of books. I can say without reservation that "The Cartel" is in the top three. It is the sequel to "The Power of the Dog," (which I also loved) and it's one of those sequels that surpasses the original. I don't mean in any way to say that this is a happy or uplifting book. It's the opposite: gritty, brutal, depressing. But SO good. I found myself overjoyed when there were clothes to fold or dishes to be done, and I probably walked farther during this book that I would have otherwise. I was taking any opportunity to put my earbuds in and get back to the story. I cannot recommend this highly enough.
