Historia
On September 1, 1894, two forest fires converged on the town of Hinckley, Minnesota, trapping over 2,000 people. Daniel J. Brown recounts the events surrounding the fire in the first and only book to chronicle the dramatic story that unfolded. Whereas Oregon's famous "Biscuit" fire in 2002 burned 350,000 acres in one week, the Hinckley fire did the same damage in five hours. The fire created its own weather, including hurricane-strength winds, bubbles of plasmalike glowing gas, and 200-foot-tall flames.

In love with these brothers!
Revisado: 02-10-24
I started out slow, not sure I was ok with the accented narration. But once I got into the story the narrator was an old friend. What a great, unique storyline. I was so absorbed with the family dynamics. Each of the brothers was on a personal journey. Right up until the end I had no idea what the outcome for each would be. I felt very sad for the "Friend of the family", what a mystery he was. All in all a very enjoyable audio experience. I was sorry for it to end.

Emma Gatewood told her family she was going on a walk and left her small Ohio hometown with a change of clothes and less than $200. The next anybody heard from her, this genteel, farm-reared, 67-year-old great-grandmother had walked 800 miles along the 2,050-mile Appalachian Trail. And in September 1955, atop Maine's Mount Katahdin, she sang the first verse of "America, the Beautiful" and proclaimed, "I said I'll do it, and I've done it."

Amazing story
Revisado: 08-18-15
The best book I've listened to in a long time. I was captivated and fascinated with Grandma Gatewood - her story, her life, her strength. The story includes historical info on the Appalachian Trail which I also found very interesting. This is an amazing story , I loved it.

I did not expect to be as drawn into this story as I was, expecting a fairy tale but getting so much more. I was very caught up in the characters lives, and the images and imaginings of living in Alaska.

Disappointed in the vague ending
Revisado: 05-18-15
Nothing spectacular, but it held my interest enough to hang in there, the narration was great. I kept listening, wanting more to happen each day, wanting someone to take a stand for theirself, whether it be Annie or Nick. I was disappointed in the portrayal of the main character and wanted to shake her to see the reality of her husband and his failures. Annie's daughter was a non-character for much of the story, I would of liked to see more out of her. What kept me listening was my love of the Pacific Northwest more than anything. The story was kind of predictable, maybe that is why the author threw in the non-ending? When listening to a book, I often don't know when the end is about to happen, unlike with a book in hand and you can see the last page coming. So this story just kind of stopped, and left me hanging. Wondering.

Fascinating Florida History in story form
Revisado: 05-18-15
You don't have to be a fan of historical fiction to fall in love with this story that covers Florida from the late 1800's/Civil War era to the 1970;'s. I learned so much about Florida that I never would of dreamed, and I lived there for a period of 5 years, so I was especially fascinated. I was saddened to read of the wildness and beauty and vastness of this remarkable state, before it truly became ruined by the modern world.
You will follow three generations of MacIvey's as they begin their time in Florida dirt poor, chasing down wild cattle, eventually growing a cattle empire and then acquiring thousands of acres or orange trees, and vegetable farms, and into the land boom of growth of Florida. Each character was fully real to me, the men, their wives, the Indians, the sons. Many times through out the story I found myself in tears and it's a rare book that makes me cry. I felt so much the emotion of this story and these people's lives.
I do feel sadness at the way the story ended, nothing dramatic, just an ending, and I had questions about certain characters that I was left to wonder about, what happened to them. But still overall, a 5 star book. The narration were perfection. I would like to have a hard copy of this book now as well, to read again some day.

So POWERFUL
Revisado: 03-20-15
I was so very moved by this story, amazed at the courage amidst the horrors of war. I can't believe the strength of the women in this book, particularly Corrie of course, as well as the unwavering faith of her sister. Just an incredible read/listen. A reality check at looking at life today and what it was like 'back then'. A history lesson with an emotional impact that changes me, impacts my view on life and the world, and of myself. Inspiring beyond measure.

The Emotional connection of ELEPHANTS!
Revisado: 03-20-15
I was not expecting the powerful force underlying this entire novel of the emotional aspect of elephants. Much of the elephant facts I have read before and known. But I EXPERIENCED this book as if I was present in the compound. The elephant story is as powerful as the people's story. This was a fantastic read that I could not wait to get to each day and I now rave about to my friends. Many unexpected twists, and ultimate surprises. A really different sort of read, or 'listen'. It was extraordinary.

Gives me HOPE
Revisado: 03-20-15
I was very pleased with this story being an actual story initially of this doctor's life, how his beliefs came to be, fell under fire, and rose again to become the core of who he is. His writings of his bedside experiences greatly moved me. Gives me hope when I feel the despair of living in this troubled world. I believe in this story. I will buy the book in print so I can go back and highlight specific paragraphs that were particularly significant to me.

Painful Insight into the Alzheimer patient's mind
Revisado: 03-20-15
Let me begin first to say my mother is declining rapidly with alzheimers, which is why I chose this book. It was a heart breaking emotional difficult story for me to read, but I felt it provided me with a unique insight into my own mother's mind in her struggle. It was helpful and hurtful at the same time. I thought the narration was excellent and the story itself was a powerful testimony of a very strong woman going down to this disease. I wanted her to win, I felt I stood beside her and felt her pain and her sense of loss. The story held me to the end. It remains with me now.
