Historia
In 1631 Elizabeth Winthrop, newly widowed with an infant daughter, set sail for the New World. Against a background of rigidity and conformity she dared to befriend Anne Hutchinson at the moment of her banishment from the Massachusetts Bay Colony; dared to challenge a determined army captain bent on the massacre of her friends, the Siwanoy Indians; and, above all, dared to love a man as her heart and her whole being commanded.

Historia
From its first publication in 1877, Black Beauty has been one of the best-loved animal stories ever written. The dramatic and heartwarming tale is told by the magnificent black horse himself, from his idyllic days on a country squire’s estate to his harsh fate as a London cab horse and his merciful rescue by two kindly old ladies. Filled with vivid anecdotes about animal intelligence, the novel derives a special magic from the love of all creatures, great and small, apparent on every page.

a beautiful book
Revisado: 10-21-17
I decided to listen to many of my childhood books and after listening to Black Beauty I was thrilled with my idea. I cried at the end. As an adult I realized that Anna Sewell wrote this book as a lesson for all owners of domestic animals that cannot speak for themselves.

Historia
The brutal murder of the Rev. George Parker in the rural village of Oddingley on Midsummer's Day in 1806 - shot and beaten to death, his body set on fire and left smouldering in his own glebe field - gripped everyone from the Home Secretary to newspapermen across the country. It was a strange and stubborn case. The investigation lasted 24 years and involved inquests, judges, and coroners, each determined to solve the gruesome crime. Damn His Blood is a true story of brutality, greed, and ruthlessness.

I am only halfway through this book. It is a wonderful book full of lifestyles on the early 19th century - quite a history lesson at the same time as being a fascinating account of a brutal murder.

Excellent series
Revisado: 12-11-12
I am hooked on all Alexander McCall Smith's books. First I read 44 Scotland Street and now I am on the last book of Corduroy Mansions. I love all his eclectic characters with their faults and virtues. He really understands humans and dogs. I also read No 1 Ladies Detective Agency - but only one so far. I can't wait for my morning walk with the dog to listen to the next hour's worth! Simon Prebble is a great reader - a voice for each character.

Historia
Marcus and Doro were part of a left-wing commune from the late 1960s until the early 1990s: lentils, free love, spliffs, radical politics, cheesecloth blouses, sex, housework and cooking rotas, crochet, allotments. Their children have grown up rather different from them: primary schoolteacher Clara craves order and clean bathrooms, son Serge is pretending to his parents that is still doing a Maths Ph.d. at Cambridge, while in fact making loadsamoney in the City; third child Oolie Anna, who has Down's Syndrome, is desperate to escape home and live on her own.

Enjoyable
Revisado: 09-25-12
I am in the last quarter of this book. I listen to books while walking the dog for about an hour each day. I have always enjoyed Marina Lewycka's books. The story jumps from one character to another and often back into the past when the characters were young. She is as funny an ever and sometimes people must wonder why I am laughing as I walk! Some books I can't wait to hear what happens next - but not with this book - it is what I call leisurely listening (reading). The narrator is excellent.

Excellent listening
Revisado: 09-11-12
It took me a while to get into the first book because of all the characters, but once they were established as 'real characters', I loved the stories. I then listened to the next book and am now listening to 'Love Over Scotland'. It is essential to read the books in order. They are beautifully written and the narrator is excellent.
