Historia
Some lines should never be crossed. Police corruption, an investigation that ends in tragedy and the mystery of a little girl’s silence – three unconnected events that will prove to be linked by one small town. While detective Cormac Reilly faces enemies at work and trouble in his personal life, garda Peter Fisher is relocated out of Galway with the threat of prosecution hanging over his head. But even that is not as terrible as having to work for his overbearing father, the local copper for the pretty seaside town of Roundstone.

Quite childish
Revisado: 04-21-20
I enjoyed the first half of the book. But then it just dragged and I found it difficult to finish.
The main issue that I had with it - there’s no heart in this book. Things happened to the main character, but he just responded without real feeling. In truth, all feelings in this book were extremely shallow. People died, and for the most part it felt like none of the characters cared.
I also hate stupid characters, and after a while I started suspecting that everyone in this book was stupid. I rolled my eyes many times.
The writing in itself is quite basic and effective. The plot goes through several different perspectives, but it’s inconsistent. We have a character’s point of view, but then she goes away for three years, during which we have none of her perspective. It feels very contrived.
The world building was also lacking.
I mean... I enjoyed the first half because it all seemed like things that would develop as the book goes along, but instead it just regressed.
I can’t see myself continuing wii this series.

Underwhelming
Revisado: 04-13-20
So... this was a lot like “Lost”, in the sense that it keeps you intrigued, but doesn’t deliver.
So many loopholes, not enough character and not convincing scenarios.
I was entertained, but felt cheated at the same time.
Not sure I’ll go on to read the next one.

Very captivating
Revisado: 04-08-20
I really couldn’t put it down, and even stayed up late some nights, listening.
I don’t think it’s a masterpiece, but it’s certainly captivating and gripping. The concept and the execution were both great. I could see everything in my minds eye, which is such a joy to experience.
I feel that the characters were the weakest part of the book, but not in a way that really bothered or annoyed me. The plot was very enticing, with truly excellent pace. Not a dull moment.
The narrator was great, except for the female voices... but, again, it wasn’t that bad.
Overall, a great read.

Historia
Professional heroes kill and loot deadly monsters every day, but Gorm Ingerson's latest quest will be anything but business as usual. The adventuring industry drives the economy of Arth, a world much like our own but with more magic and fewer vowels. Monsters' hoards are claimed, bought by corporate interests, and sold off to plunder funds long before the Heroes' Guild actually kills the beasts. That's a terrible arrangement for the Shadowkin; orcs, goblins, kobolds, and their ilk must apply for to become Noncombatant Paper Carriers to avoid being killed and looted by heroes.

Revisado: 02-06-20
I truly enjoyed this!
At first I found it difficult to get into it, but after a couple of hours I was completely engrossed.
I was looking for something light and humorous, and this book certainly delivers. But surprisingly, at some point I was really taken by the characters and the plot, and while this was constantly humorous, I actually got a good story to go along with it.
So funny, well written, great characters and an interesting plot. Definitely a winner!
Can’t wait to read the next one.
The audiobook narrator was also excellent. The sample doesn’t do him justice; he’s really great at narrating different characters and accents, and his comedic delivery is spot on. Very enjoyable.

Enjoyable
Revisado: 01-20-20
A bit strange, but mostly fun and light hearted. The characters are likable, the plot is fun. The world and style are a bit simplistic, it feels kinda like a YA book.
Either way, I gulped it up. And moving on to the next installment.

Historia
It is now 100 years since drugs were first banned in the United States. On the eve of this centenary, journalist Johann Hari set off on an epic three-year, 30,000-mile journey into the war on drugs. What he found is that more and more people all over the world have begun to recognize three startling truths: Drugs are not what we think they are. Addiction is not what we think it is. And the drug war has very different motives to the ones we have seen on our TV screens for so long.

Good, but problematic
Revisado: 11-28-19
This is a good book. It’s very engaging, and the anecdotes and people’s stories are very heartfelt and touching.
However.
While listening to it, I couldn’t help but feeling like I was being manipulated. It reads as a very one sided account of the issue, and in quite a shallow way at that. Instead of being a scientific-social book, it felt a bit more like a religious one. As if the author is certain he has found the solution to the problem, and now every piece of data and information reinforces his beliefs. At times, I even felt as if the figures and statistical information were being manipulated to strengthen his argument. And, I have to say, it made me question the validity of his claims rather than buying into his point. For instance, at one point he stated that after legalization, the percentage of canabis use went up from 8.5% to 18%. But instead of stating that this means that the use of canabis more than doubled after legalization, the author explains that its important not to exaggerate the scale of this rise in usage, which is “a little” increase. At other times, when similar numbers play out against the author’s beliefs, he analyzes them as significant.
I do believe addicts should be treated and decriminalized, I’m not opposed to the ideas the author is trying to push. I think the war on drugs isn’t solving anything and has caused a lot of pain throughout the world. I’m simply not sure it’s as simple and clear cut as the author is trying to make it out to be. We need better analyzed data.

Maybe I’m missing something, but it felt like there was no world building, no character development, only some weird unestablished relationship and a whole lot whining about it.

Gripping
Revisado: 11-04-19
Very engaging, though the main characters (mostly the girl) felt a little flat. The story, the setting, the mystery - all worked very well and were very gripping. Will’s episodes were much more interesting than the modern day ones, but the latter served to increase the tension, so I can’t complain.
The book was extremely effective in bringing into light some of the missing history and the horrible things people can do to each other. It’s a piece of history we should never forget.
The narrators were great, I especially loved Will’s performance.
