Historia
When everything has been taken from you, what else is there to do but run? So that’s what Annabelle does - she runs from Seattle to Washington, DC, through mountain passes and suburban landscapes, from long lonely roads to college towns. She’s not ready to think about the why yet, just the how - muscles burning, heart pumping, feet pounding the Earth. But no matter how hard she tries, she can’t outrun the tragedy from the past year, or the person - The Taker - that haunts her.

Get ready to feel a full spectrum of emotions!

Read for a virtual book club I just joined. The characters are so well written and real. The author clearly has experience with trauma and loss and the progression through grief. I related to so many of the feelings the main character was experiencing. I wept often and learned some great strategies for processing my own deep wounds.

Fun story, but lacked depth
Revisado: 07-27-21
Intriguing storyline that easily got me to the end, but the nature of the events that unfold for present-day Caroline happen unrealistically fast. I mean who has that much luck uncovering a 200 year old mystery on a 10 day vacation? But it's fiction, right? Anything goes. Additionally, any story steeped in history needs adequate research and I feel like the author did just enough to make the story believable, but I wasn't convinced she knew much about historical London. Read any Outlander book by Diana Gabaldon and you'll see the depth of research that goes into those books. Overall, a fun read, but just not my preference.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Great content, cohesiveness needed work!
Revisado: 12-24-19
Great insight on communicating with and understanding others. I did feel like stories and tie ins, although very interesting and relevant, sometimes seemed to go on and on so much that I found myself lost on the point the author was trying to make.
I also kept hoping we would get into how to talk to strangers better, but the entirety of the book was spent on what not to do.
The author is very engaging and obviously passionate about this topic. Overall, I left the book feeling better educated about something I hadn't really thought about before and do feel like I took enough away from it to apply it in my day to day interactions with others.

Slow to start, but hard to put down once you've gotten past the first few chapters. I cried, I cheered, I loved, I hated. The author transported me to this harrowing time and I fell in love with Eva and Angelo. Don't miss this one!

Historia
On the day she was abducted, Annie O’Sullivan, a 32-year-old Realtor, had three goals: sell a house, forget about a recent argument with her mother, and be on time for dinner with her ever-patient boyfriend. The open house is slow, but when her last visitor pulls up in a van as she’s about to leave, Annie thinks it just might be her lucky day after all.

Wow! Really captures the trauma victim's struggle.
Revisado: 01-06-18
As someone who has personally experienced abusive trauma and has children and family members who have also experienced it, the story really resonated for me on so many levels. It almost makes me think that the author has a deep personal understanding of this topic because she captures the struggle that victims go through so incredibly well.
I was not expecting this book to be therapeutic at all, but it's really helped me to look at my own history of hurt and that of my daughter's who is adopted. It really helped me to connect with my pain and understand how hard it is for other people to understand it or know what to do with it. No one can say anything right. They can't pity you too much, pity is the worst, it's downright repulsive. Then you have those that want to solve the problem for you, push you too hard. They act like they know what's best for you, those folks just piss you off. All you can think is, "I'd like to see you go through this and see how well you fare." The best folks are the ones that quietly listen, who connect and reflect your feelings without making you feel like you have to worry about theirs. They don't try to act like they understand your hurt, but they know how to make you feel heard. This is what Annie's therapist does for her. You never hear the therapist speak. I thought this was weird at first, but as I got further through the story it was so nice to not hear someone evaluate everything she said. Some people complained about the ending being too soft, I think that they were wanting a bigger, badder person to be responsible for the pain that Annie went through. The truth is most of the world's hurt comes from the people that are closest to them and those people are blind to the pain they cause. Their hurt is always bigger than yours and they never see...you.
This is a great read. Already searching for my next Chevy Stevens book. Narrator, Angela Dawe, was amazing too. Really captured Annie. Don't miss this book.

Predictable story
Revisado: 09-28-17
I'm glad I listened to it on audio book, I think I wouldn't have made it through in print. Overuse of the word "murmur" drove me nuts. I liked the story enough to get into the next book. Hoping the writing is a little better. Narrator did great!
