Mitchell and Markby are always well written, with excellent narration by Judith Boyd. But this installment was a yawwn, saw the killer from a mile away, and the damsel in distress was pushed off to the sidelines. Meredith got shoehorned into the climax and Markby seemed unnecessary. Granger’s heart wasn’t in this and it shows. M and M’s relationship was a footnote. The characters deserved better than Granger gave them.

I’m learning that Heyer creates interesting and endearing characters, but has trouble giving them something to do. I feel like she wanted this to be a romance, got distracted by a missing document plot, then with a jolt remembered it was supposed to be a romance. Even though we know from the start who Elinor will end up with, it doesn’t really make sense because she’s barely spent any time with him. She spends way more time with someone else, and a sweet friendship develops. The entire book takes place in a week, so what else can develop but a friendship? Heyer gave too much screen time to the wrong people here.

Other reviews have complained about the narration, but it’s more the engineer than the narrator. He does a great job with all the characters, except Elinor could have stood out more. There ARE some weird pauses, but that’s down to the sound engineer. Sometimes when tracks are placed in order, they need a second or two shaved off at the end. Hopefully they’ll take it down and run through it again to catch the dead air.

There’s no one to dislike, but no one to really root for either. Adam marries for money, Jenny for a title. Adam is in puppy love with a childhood friend, but it’s obvious that that’s all it is. Jenny’s father is a great boisterous merchant, and I found myself wishing he were the main character. It’s more of a study in making one’s bed and lying in it—definitely not a love story. I didn’t need to spend money on this when I see it for free in real life.

Always enjoy an MHC novel. A few too many red herrings and the killer reveal was a tad flat. Narrator was great, except she gave all the men a raspy voice. Overall enjoyable.

Bel Arvardan, the man’s man. Joseph Schwartz, the nebbishy tailor. One man is out to prove his professional theories, the other looks forward to retirement. Each becomes a man without a country, the opposite ends of space-time bringing them together. Throw in a love story for Bel and brilliantly mind-numbing bureaucracy, and you’ve got a great story that works on many levels.

Some reviews looked down on how futuristic Asimov is or isn’t, but given how people behaved during the pandemic, should we be surprised if humans regressed to newspapers in 10,000 years? The Romans developed concrete 1900 years ago, but we didn’t figure out how to make it again until the 1700s. It’s pretty clear that technological advancement can’t prevent societal setbacks.

Great handling of whether or not Nick Spencer was good or a conman. Maybe a few too many villains, though Ned is truly icky. Clark really knows how to creep us out 🤣 but always makes the ending so cathartic. Jan Maxwell can do no wrong as narrator-she nails every character. It’s not the Mary Higgins Clark Experience without her!

Having the actor who played Wimsey when he met Harriet is great, the other actor read the earlier books and was also great. The Wimsey mysteries are never in a hurry, but they immerse you in their world and keep your attention. My only issue was how a ceramic death was handled. I just didn’t believe everyone would take it in stride like they did. Yes they’re aristocrats but there was no inner grief. Given the person who died, I give the author a demerit for this. It’s out of character for everyone involved to just dust their hat and carry on. Otherwise a great read, much better than other books that have tried and failed to continue famous detectives.

Abusers always make their victims feel as if freedom and safety is some strange request no one has ever made before. There Is Confusion proves that the need for both has been present for much longer than the 1960's. The book is set in the years before World War I, but since it was published in 1924, we are getting the story from someone who was there. We are introduced to the Marshall and Bye families, each with a legacy of ambitious and intentional ancestors along with those less inclined to make a great name for themselves.

Joanna Marshall is a young woman in turn-of-the-20th-century Harlem, the daughter of a successful businessman who encourages her dreams of becoming a dancer. She meets Peter Bye, an orphaned boy who shows promise as both a surgeon and a musician. Although Peter is an orphan and poor, he comes from 'excellent family', and his name gives him entre into the black society of West Philadelphia (and yes I sang the Fresh Prince theme every time they mentioned it lol). There were black Byes and white Byes, the white having owned the black before the Civil War. Fauset explores the two families' histories, and we feel the anger and resentment of rights and dreams thwarted by racism. Yet in spite of these injustices, we are treated to a great love story. Peter and Joanna have much growing up to do, and are allowed to make mistakes, fall on their faces, and learn their lessons as fleshed out human beings.

Another great character is Maggie Ellerslee, a girl who is befriended by the Marshall daughters until she gets ideas above 'her station'. She is deemed unworthy of the son of the house, but she's not about to fade into Tragic Mulatta territory.

There is enough in this book for two or even three books, and I wish Fauset had lengthened the story to a series. When we get to WWI, it is the best writing in the book. Unfortunately it came as a bit of whiplash, as if Fauset intended it for its own book.

We meet kind and cruel people of both races, because humans are human. Instead of showcasing the horrendous tragedies that took place at the time, Fauset focuses on the everyday predatory behavior black people were subjected to, from figuring out where they could safely eat or shop to Joanna being called the n-word when she shows up for auditions. The characters talk about striving in hopes of things improving in the future, and we see exactly what the world is deprived of when creative minds are suffocated by hate.

If you want to read a fully-developed story of finding oneself and overcoming cruelty while facing one's own flaws and learning from them, you will find it here. The narrator is lively, but not sure she was the best fit for this book. I put the speed at .9 because she read a bit too fast for what was happening.

If you like the Office Ladies podcast then you will thoroughly enjoy this book. I took enough acting classes to know that acting’s not for me, but I’m a writer and my main character is an actress. This book is highly entertaining and written in a way that won’t make the layman’s eyes glaze over. Fischer’s conversational style is like a lunchtime chat with a friend who tells it like it is.
Know that a handful of f bombs are in the book, especially when she interviews Derek Waters. Best read by ages 16 and up.
I always consider a book that gets me excited about a subject that doesn’t necessarily interest me is a win. I think Jenna Fischer could make a refrigerator manual interesting, so kudos on this book.
