Historia
In the 1960s, the world’s attention was focused on a nail-biting race against time: the international campaign to save a dozen ancient Egyptian temples from drowning in the floodwaters of the gigantic new Aswan High Dam. But the coverage of this unprecedented rescue effort completely overlooked the daring French archaeologist who made it all happen. Without the intervention of Christiane Desroches-Noblecourt, the temples—including the Temple of Dendur, now at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art—would currently be at the bottom of a vast reservoir.

Fabulous history, needs editing
Revisado: 04-28-25
A comprehensive (if anything can be) history of the last one hundred years of excavation in Egypt. Details the emergence and leadership of women achieving major roles and accomplishments in that period. Definitely goes into too much detail, all of the info was fascinating but from the mid-point onwards it could have held up to much more editing.

Excellent world creation and story
Revisado: 03-01-25
To be honest, I didn’t have high hopes. But I gave it a shot and wow was it worth it. Samantha Shannon has created a richly detailed world, and it is very easy to imagine multiple installments in this story. I look forward to them and hope she continues to meet or soar past the standard she set with this first book.

Such mixed feelings
Revisado: 01-30-25
Likes: fantastic story, so much detail. Disliked: portrayals of the Native Americans. I can understand the stereotyping in the colonial people’s speculations of what the native peoples were like, but the actual interactions were very disappointing in their portrayal. Also, there is one scene in a barn that is absolutely horrifying and does nothing to further a story. If the author had wrapped it up at the end, it possibly could have been justified but as it was entirely forgotten it served zero purpose and should have been edited out. As with A LOT more repetitious detail…given those complaints, it was still worth listening to. And the narrator was fabulous!

Not quite YA, not a finished plot
Revisado: 10-14-24
I was so disappointed in the ending. Vaughn had built a great world and great characters, but so many things were missing. About 3/4 theu I started researching a sequel as there was no way it could wrap up smoothly but couldn’t find anything. The slap dash ending raised even more unanswered questions. Good editing and a tighter plot, or a more expansive plot - there was certainly room story wise- would have helped this book tremendously.

One of the best books (I have listened to) in at least a decade. The writing and story are gripping and profound, the reader is one hundred percent suited for this tale. I would read anything again by this author, and listen to anything by this performer.
