Historia
Psychologist Dr. Ophelia Bray has dedicated her life to the study and prevention of ERS—a space-based condition most famous for a case that resulted in the brutal murders of twenty-nine people. When she's assigned to a small exploration crew, she's eager to make a difference. But as they begin to establish residency on an abandoned planet, it becomes clear that crew is hiding something. While Ophelia focuses on her new role, her crewmates are far more interested in investigating the eerie, ancient planet and unraveling the mystery behind the previous colonizer's hasty departure.

I made it to chapter 8 and had to stop. The narrator/protagonist is unrelentingly self loathing. I couldn’t take it anymore.

Like others, I really wanted to like this book. It seemed to have all the pieces of a horror story I would love. Unfortunately, there’s not a single likable character, and the main character is so loathsome it ruins any chance of this being a good story for me.
In short, the vast majority of this book is self-deprecating internal monologues by a character that hates herself so much you as a reader can’t possibly help but feel the same. I’m typically an empathetic reader, but I just wanted her to shut up so we could get to the actual plot/mystery. In the end, never having to hear her utter another whoa is me diatribe was more worth it to me than resolving the mystery at the crux of this book. Thank goodness for audibles generous return policy.

Very well researched and well written historical fiction. Plus, the narration was superb. Anyone who enjoyed the movies Zulu and Zulu dawn will certainly enjoy this story. I can’t wait to listen to the next four books!

Must-listen for military history buffs
Revisado: 09-02-21
This epic history is a well known classic, and the details it provides are fascinating. What I enjoyed most about this narrative though, was that the author was a news correspondent in Germany during this time period. He witnessed first-hand, the rise and fall of the Third Reich from the inside, and his accounts of speeches and rallies he was present at are historical gold. It's a long listen, but I was riveted for all 57 hrs.

I really enjoyed this story. The characters were interesting and well written, the plot was pretty original, and the narration was great. Seems like there's room for a sequel or series here too, which is promising,

Literary junk food
Revisado: 09-02-21
An unoriginal zombie apocalypse story. This will certainly pass the time and the exceptional narration helps, but in the end, the bad outweighed the good for me. I don't bale on books very often, but I couldn't get through this one.

When linguist Andrew Dennison is yanked from his bed by the Secret Service and taken to a top secret facility in the desert, he has no idea he's been brought there to translate the words of an ancient demon. He joins pretty but cold veterinarian Sun Jones, eccentric molecular biologist Dr. Frank Belgium, and a hodge-podge of religious, military, and science personnel to try and figure out if the creature is, indeed, Satan. But things quickly go bad, and very soon Andy isn't just fighting for his life, but the lives of everyone on earth…

A lot of fun
Revisado: 04-27-21
Not a masterful work of literature, but it’s honestly just a fun book. Starts a little slow as the story is built but the payoff in the last third of the book is well worth it. Narration is on point as well.

What a ride
Revisado: 11-12-20
I’ve had my eye on this book for awhile, and I’m glad I finally pulled the trigger. It’s certainly absurd and over the top at times, but boy was the story entertaining. You won’t walk away from this listen with any profound insight on the human condition, but you’ll certainly be entertained from start to finish.

Historia
For years, the abandoned MacKenzie mansion remained hidden in rural Wisconsin. Rumors and stories of apparitions, odd noises, accidents, and strange deaths in or near the property were enough to convince the townsfolk it was haunted, and they stayed away. Lucas MacKenzie and his brother, Nate, know nothing of this when they inherit the property and decide to bring their families to Wisconsin for a major renovation project with HGTV stardom in mind. As they tear out old fixtures and open shuttered windows, the house begins to reveal secrets of a terrible past.

Not great
Revisado: 10-19-20
I never ever write reviews, but this book was so time consuming and so disappointing that I felt the need to warn others. I'm a huge fan of the horror genre and have read or listened to many classics, as well as contemporaries like Darcey Coates. I especially enjoy a good haunted house book, which is why I was initially drawn to Shepherd's Warning.
The book started out like your typical evil house story, slowing adding mysteries the unexplained, but eventually the story devolves into a convoluted mess of unfinished ideas and reality TV-like drama, Unfortunately, the plot is sooo slow due to repetitive and incredibly uninteresting dialogue that it took me almost 2/3rds of the book to realize that it was going absolutely nowhere.
The narration of this book did not do it any favors either. I've listened to 77 books now on Audible and this is the first time I had to speed up the narration (to 1.5) because it was so painfully slow. That said, the voice acting was on par with most other audio books I've listened to, so I have no complains there.
All-in-all, everyone has different tastes and while I personally did not enjoy this book, based on other listener's ratings, there is a good deal of folks who did.

Historia
Felix Allsey is a travel writer with a keen eye for the paranormal, and he's carved out a unique, if only slightly lucrative, niche for himself in nonfiction; he writes travelogues of the country's most haunted places, after haunting them himself. When he convinces the owner of the infamous Rotterdam Mansion to let him stay on the premises for two weeks, he believes he's finally found the location that will bring him a best seller. Then things start going wrong: screams from upstairs, figures in the thresholds, and more than what should be in any basement.
