Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Ask gut wrenchingly real. Sad, heartbreaking, funny, philosophical, a satisfying conclusion, especially knowing where he is today. I admire Usha immensely.

Historia
Steeplechase jockey Derek Franklin has had more broken bones than he cares to count, but it seems his latest injury could very well bring his days on the race course to a screeching halt. But that’s the least of his concerns when his brother turns up dead, leaving Derek as the sole inheritor of his estate. It doesn’t take long for Derek to learn that his brother—a magistrate who imported and sold semiprecious stones—was keeping more than his share of secrets.

Great story
Revisado: 04-04-24
Dick Francis books are believable, intriguing, and harmlessly entertaining in this difficult life. “Straight” reminds me of days gone by with the desk phones on a cord, but the characters are timeless.

Historia
Striking beauty comes at a price. Rahab paid it when at the age of 15 she was sold into prostitution by the one man she loved and trusted—her father. With her keen mind and careful planning she turned heartache into success, achieving independence while still young. And she vowed never again to trust a man. Any man. God had other plans. Into the emotional turmoil of her world walked Salmone, a prominent leader of Judah, held in high esteem by all Israel.

It is wholesome.
Revisado: 02-24-24
This book would be helpful to women who have endured any kind of trauma, emotional or physical, in its tracing of Rahab’s spiritual healing after her years of prostitution. Afshar does a good job of creating a reasonable storyline from the few but dramatic facts about Rahab’s life we know from the the books of Joshua and Matthew. Well worth your time, especially if you suffer from trauma.

Absolutely fab reader. Appropriate use of scriptural theme verse at the beginning of each chapter. I made a list of those. Great resource.

Wholesome story, believable character.
Revisado: 01-13-24
Both main characters are engaging, and all the characters are believable. Catherine is an admirable young woman who reminds me of many women on a mission I have known. Matthias is a fair, manly-man who reacts protectively but also with an open mind to Catherine’s many aspirations. I love that this story is based on real people.

You know the story of the Three Wise Men of the East, and how they traveled from far away to offer their gifts at the manger-cradle in Bethlehem. But have you ever heard the story of the Other Wise Man? This one-hour audiobook contains the complete text of Henry van Dyke's original story, artfully brought to life by a colorful cast of characters under the direction of David Nevland.

Historia
In the war-torn London of 1939, fourteen-year-old Hazel and five-year-old Flora are evacuated to a rural village to escape the horrors of the Second World War. Living with the kind Bridie Aberdeen and her teenage son, Harry, in a charming stone cottage along the River Thames, Hazel fills their days with walks and games to distract her young sister, including one that she creates for her sister and her sister alone—a fairy tale about a magical land, a secret place they can escape to that is all their own.

I could have done with half the flashbacks and less belaboring the point in many places. If you have lots of time, I recommend. If not or you aren’t really patient, pick another book.

Historia
A masterpiece of satire, this classic has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life and foibles from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below". At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C.S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly-wise old Devil to his nephew, Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man.

Historia
Michael O'Halloran is the charming Gene Stratton-Porter novel of an orphaned newspaper seller who asks nothing of the world except to "be square". The book presents a vivid description of American life in 1914 and, though the characters suffer many hardships, the overall tone is so upbeat that it's easy to see why this book outsold Pollyanna in 1916. Stratton-Porter's skills as a naturalist make the country scenes especially vibrant. Her ear for dialogue is unsurpassed, demonstrating to the listener that, if life in America wasn't like this, it should have been.

Refreshingly not 2023
Revisado: 03-28-23
The reader was fabulous except for the falsetto reading of the female child who is not in the book that much, so be patient. The storyline espouses the author’s socioeconomic views. I wonder if she is the founder of our current foster care program.

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was Professor of Anglo-Saxon (Old English) at the University of Oxford. His research on Beowulf is still considered a standard in the field. Tolkien, however, unlike most Oxford dons, stepped out of his role as professor to create popular literature. Tolkien’s best-known writings were The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, in which he created a fully realized world known as Middle-earth, vaguely identifiable as Northern Europe in a pre-history that never was.

A very informative biography and light literary analysis of Tolkien’s famous works. I had no idea about the conflict between Lewis and him about the philosophy of allegory. Great listen. Now I’ve got to reread the “Fellowship of the Rings.” Thank you Audible.
