Historia
Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day. It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

It was good until the big reveals
Revisado: 05-07-24
Narrator is excellent, first off.
Story starts out great and I was hooked. But then the villain turns out to be someone I actually paused and went "... who was that again?" and then the big reveal of who actually knew the protag prior was just so far fetched, I actually said "what the ****" when it happened. It makes no sense. And that her mother said not a damn thing before she left to Scotland other than "no please don't go" was just... outrageous. It's as though the author had this idea they deemed really cool, and built everything up to it any which way they could just to achieve it, even if getting to that point started to bend and disregard reality. Argh.

Overpowered protag
Revisado: 03-19-24
I really wanted to like this and get into a new long epic fantasy series, but yooooo Rezkin is so ridiculously overpowered it gets tedious and boring to witness. Maybe there's a reason further down the line in the series as to why this is, but for a first book introducing the char? Way too much. He can
singlehandedly defeat an entire guild of assassins in the dark while also protecting a man + 2 children, but also he gets shot with a poison dart and he's IMMUNE to the poison, but ALSO not one assassin manages to land a hit on him, AND there's actually additional assassins from far away who join the fray. So more assassins than usual during this test! And then he defeats the Grand Master assassin without taking a single blow and does it in a couple of minutes.
^^^That sorta shit is CONSISTENT throughout the book where Rez is this one man army.
Also every female char falls in love with him or flirts with him, while the other male chars sigh on the sidelines wishing they were more like Rezkin.
Admittedly there are some funny bits where his lack of real world experience shows, like how he deals with his feelings and his lack of understanding of them. I genuinely like that part of Rezkin. But then he just becomes this... demigod of a character in every other situation.
Also the way Frisha is written makes me cringe right down to my soul. Her entire personality is Rezkin.
The narrator is great. Super talented.
But yeah, nah, not gonna be getting into this series because I could barely stand the protag in book 1.

Historia
What happens when the haggling is done and the shops are closed? When the quest has been given, the steeds saddled, and the adventurers are off to their next encounter? They keep the world running, the food cooked, and the horses shoed, yet what adventurer has ever spared a thought or concern for the Non-Player Characters? In the town of Maplebark, four such NPCs settle in for a night of actively ignoring the adventurers drinking in the tavern when things go quickly and fatally awry.

Absolutely for fans of Dungeons and Dragons
Revisado: 12-17-23
I LOVED this whole heartedly. Not by any means some great epic fantasy, but it is super fun and totally meant for fans of tabletop RPGs. If you aren't a fan of D&D/TTRPGs then I'd not recommend this for you. But if you are! You're in a for a helluva good time <3

Really good
Revisado: 12-07-23
Loved it. Cried a few times, which surprised me. The friendship, humour and char dev was super-strong.
My biggest issue is mostly the final book, and maybe the last 1/3 of the second book. There was such a cluster of things happening, sometimes it felt as though not enough attention was given to certain arcs. I really enjoyed the first book because things were given the chance to breathe and grow, but twists and turns to the plot seem to pop up every chapter later in the series. It's okay to let things settle and breathe. Sometimes I feel like authors feel as though they need to pump out action every other moment otherwise the reader will lose interest (though to be fair, the amount of times I've seen reviews say something is "slow" I usually find just decently paced character/world building, so maybe the pressure is real here?)
Regardless, it was a good run and I was really endeared to the characters. Really happy I bought the trilogy. Was well worth it.

Loved it, but have to agree about the narrator
Revisado: 11-21-23
It's not that he was bad, but we spent hours listening to the first trilogy and got to know the characters with the voices then. In particular, it was hard to listen to Reklin since the narrator from the first trilogy had such a distinct voice. It changed him entirely because you got to know the way he spoke, certain inflections in the voice and pronunciation of words, things like that.
I did enjoy it a lot though and I'm really happy to be listening to more of the Augment War.

Fun
Revisado: 10-13-23
Overall it's pretty fun especially if you like conjuration magic and stories of the people vs. the crown sorta thing. Nothing revolutionary or groundbreaking, but fun.
I think I struggled a bit with the narrator's performance at some points. It's not that she was bad, in fact she was great, but there were some moments that made me cringe. Not enough to say it made it hard to listen to overall, no where near that, but just moments here and there.
I really enjoyed the Augmented from Hale which is why I picked this up. I will give the second book a go.

If 14-year-old Cassandra Reed makes it through her first day at Miss Castwell’s Institute for the Magical Instruction of Young Ladies without anyone discovering her secret, maybe, just maybe, she’ll let herself believe that she really does belong at Miss Castwell’s. Except Cassandra Reed’s real name is Sarah Smith and up until now, she lived her whole life in the Warren, serving a magical family, the Winters, as all non-magical “Snipes” are bound by magical Guardian law to do. That is, until one day, Sarah accidentally levitates Mrs. Winter’s favorite vase in the parlor....

Some weird plot holes, some nice moments
Revisado: 09-12-23
Unfortunately the plot isn't the most original as I was able to figure out most of the plot pretty early on, but I think it's honestly more about the friendships, social interactions and characters, all of which are enjoyable. But the ending felt weirdly rushed? Compared to the thought put in for the rest of the book. I was a tad confused with
(SPOILER ALERT)
Ivy and Alicia turning up outta no where during the final scene. I thought maybe it was some form of teleportation Sarah caused in her desperation, but then the girls mentioned the bird being persistent in following it. So Phillip got them? Were they already at the school grounds? That can't be the case because all who were present were at the dining hall earlier, and they weren't. Maybe I missed something!
There were also some minor plot hole stuff like the Mother Book removing the scars from Sarah's body but then she still had that scar to show Owen later when they were remembering fighting as children.
(END OF SPOILERS)
The narrator is phenomenal. I was blown away by her talent.
Overall it was cute and some moments genuinely funny, but some stuff seemed to be treated like an afterthought or not thought about at all. I won't be getting the next book, though that was the hope.

It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.

Gotta agree with most reviews re MC
Revisado: 07-14-23
Unfortunately I gotta say that it's true that Jason is difficult to endure. He def has his moments, though the charm of him originally was he was this reg guy way in over his head. But then he was suddenly a master of manipulation and figuring people out. Unlike most reviews, I didn't mind the "preachy" stuff in that I found it interesting to hear that perspective that's often not A Thing when I, say, play D&D or videogames. But it does become a bit much after a while.
That said I REALLY wish the story had been about the other chars, like Rufus, Farah and Gary. I loved every scene they were present.
The narrator's talent is exceptional.
Jason's overall personality is enough to make me not wanna get into the rest of the series. The idea have having to sit through that for another good chunk of time hurts my head.
