Such a classic!!!
Revisado: 08-18-24
I love this book so much, and have read it many times over the years. This is my first time reading it via audiobook and it was so excellent and comforting. It’s very different from the movie, which I also love, but either suffers from the differences. John McDonough’s narration is excellent (he also narrates the Freddy the Pig series, which I highly recommend) and feels like you’re being read to by your grandfather. I only wish he had narrated the entire series or at least the first few.

Always So Much Fun!
Revisado: 11-26-23
This continues to be one of my favorite cozy series. I love hearing Flo and Lady H interact with each other, and to see the real loyalty they have to each other. Elizabeth Knoweldon’s narration is SUPERB, and I could just listen to the over and over again. (I have with a few of them!) I hope this series continues for several more books. I’ll be here to enjoy all of them.

Historia
The ancient curse of Carnaby Castle has begun taking victims again—either that, or someone’s very cleverly done away with the new young bride of the philandering family patriarch, and the chief suspect is none other than Carnaby, London’s finest club steward. Anty Boisjoly’s wits and witticisms are tested to their frozen limit as he sifts the superstitions, suspicions, and age-old schisms of the mediaeval Peak District village of Hoy to sort out how it was done before Carnaby’s served his last scotch-and-soda.

I just love this series. Lighthearted, funny, and filled with wordplay. Tim Bruce is an excellent narrator, and I can’t imagine taking in these stories in any other format. I hope they continue to work together for a long time.

Kate Reading is spectacular.
Revisado: 05-08-23
She has rapidly become a new favorite narrator. Every book I’ve listened to by her has been excellent. She adds so much to the story with her portrayals of a large cast of characters.
The story in this one is meandering, but I wound up loving it. I usually hate Sherlock Holmes retellings and pastiches but this does something new and inventive by not trying to imitate Conan Doyle’s writing style. It’s a wonderful take on the Holmes and Watson characters and there are several nods to the original works, but at no point is it a copy cat. These new versions, Charlotte Holmes and Mrs. Watson, are a delight and I’m really looking forward to seeing where their characters are headed and how they’ll grow. Also, Lord Ingram is rather dreamy.

Delightful and Heartwarming
Revisado: 04-26-23
This was so fun. It was a reread for me, but the first time on audio. I throughly enjoyed the narration, and she added all the feeling into Tilly’s voice that I wanted from the print version. I love the idea of Bookwandering and I feel like it will more and more explored as the series goes on. I’m definitely looking forward to the second one!

A Solid Good Time
Revisado: 04-19-23
This was weird, quirky, funny, and endearing all at once. The narrator does an excellent job. The story is confusing and all over the place at times (both literally and figuratively), but it kept me engaged. I think I would have liked a bit more character development and a bit more time spent on exploring the relationships between all these people. There is a large cast, and sometimes it’s difficult to keep track of everyone on audio. Towards the end, it felt like everything just went crazy, but that’s not necessarily a bad think; it just took the pacing from moderate to break-neck in a very short amount of time and it just didn’t slow down again until the very end. It was a roller coaster of a novel and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it. I’m looking forward to trying out the next!

Historia
At a costume party with the dubious theme of 'famous murderers and their victims', the know-it-all amateur criminologist Roger Sheringham is settled in for an evening of beer, small talk and analysing his companions. One guest in particular has caught his attention for her theatrics, and his theory that she might have several enemies among the partygoers proves true when she is found hanging from the 'decorative' gallows on the roof terrace. Noticing a key detail which could implicate a friend in the crime, Sheringham decides to meddle with the scene.

Well….wow
Revisado: 02-14-23
This was actually brilliant. It managed to surprise me completely. It puts me in mind of The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino, and I expect was actually at least some of the inspiration for that novel. You think you know, and you try to make it make sense, and you go through all sorts of mental calisthenics, only to find out that the solution both is and isn’t exactly what seems to be. This type of mystery is exactly why I love the Golden Age.

Good Story, Irritating Narration Quirk
Revisado: 06-18-22
This is one of my comfort read series. I have all the books in hardcover, but wanted to try them on audio. I will mostly like return this one. The story itself is still good, but I cannot listen to the voice that the author does for Italian characters. It’s awful. It’s overly dramatic, very stereotypical, and literally every word has the the ‘uh’ sound at at the back that people just assume all Italians have. It’s a lilting, musical language, yes. But when your sentences read along these lines: “Everything-uh is-uh going-uh according-uh to-uh plan-uh, and-uh very-uh soon-uh I-uh will-uh (blah blah blah), etc, it REALLY grates on the ears. It would have been alright if it was just a few words, but every word??!!! I wound up skipping most of those parts because they were so aggravating.

When I first read this series, years ago now, it was my first experience with epistolary novels. I’m so glad it’s on audio now!!! It’s one of my favorite series. Kate and Cecilia are delightful, intrepid, and hilarious. I love the relationships, be it between the friends or between the couples. It’s lighthearted, engaging, and the narration by Lucy Rayner is superb. It’s marketed as YA, but anybody looking for a fun read can and will enjoy it.

New Favorite
Revisado: 12-17-21
I have loved every single Mary Stewart novel I’ve listened to so far. This one was no different. They always seem to start off a bit slow and I’m uncertain but interested. And then I end up binge listening to the entirety of the second half. It’s so much fun. She’s definitely a new favorite author of mine, and I’m already looking forward to my next listen.
